Vescey: Derrick Coleman Needs New Heart

Peter Vescey of the NY Post is reporting that Derrick Coleman is in need of a heart transplant.

“Toward the end of Coleman’s 10-year NBA career, he was diagnosed as suffering from arrhythmia…For whatever reason, Coleman’s condition severely worsened lately, hospitalizing one of the toughest hombres in league history. Only a couple of his closest friends – Charles Oakley and Ricky Mahorn – have been able to see him.”

The other day we likened Michael Beasley to DC and sarcastically noted that we didn’t know if that was a good thing. Coleman has had his issues for sure, but one can conclude a heart ailment took its toll on his career, especially towards the end. Coleman may have been the most dominant power forward the game had seen in some time to come out of college when he left Syracuse, and certainly put the Nets on the map in the early-mid 1990s. And he played very well for the Sixers for a stretch. Our thoughts and prayers are with DC.

UPDATE (1:30) ESPN reports Coleman refutes this story.
