Being Danny Ainge…

With an inordinate number of mock drafts scattered throughout the internet, we here at TKB, in an effort to try and give analysis of the NBA Draft through the eyes of a team’s executive, are going to post a daily installment looking at each team’s possible draft strategy. Instead of just trying to name the one player that each team will pick, we feel it’s better to do it from this perspective. Starting with the likely 30th pick, today’s installment is Danny Ainge.

Well, two great drafts in a row and a finals appearance for me so I have a little leeway with this one. In ‘06, we got Rajon Rondo and Leon Powe, two key cogs to our conference championship run and last year, we traded for Ray Allen and took Gabe Pruitt with our 2nd round pick, who we feel is ready to step in as Rondo’s backup. Here, I’m not really looking for a project as most championship teams do, I need a little depth on my roster. Powe is great off the bench, and I hope to re-sign Posey. But, Michael Rappaport, Brian Scalabrine, really gives us nothing. I like a four-man bench rotation of Posey, Powe, Glen “Big Baby” Davis, and Pruitt, but we can definitely use someone here who can step right in and give us minutes. Doc and KG want someone who can really get after it on the defensive end. Our two priorities here are a shooting guard who can spell Ray Allen and a tall center to replace Kendrick Perkins when we go up against some of the bigger frontcourts in the conference. Brandon Rush is my dream pick here, but I don’t think he’s going to last until 30. I really like the defensive intensity of Kyle Weaver (Washington St.) and the lefty outside shot of Jamont Gordon (Mississippi State). But, my guy here is Trent Plaisted (BYU) from my alma mater, who is very athletic and can hopefully give us valuable minutes off the bench right away. But, thankfully, I can make this pick without any fear of ridicule.”
