Hahn: Vote Says Marbury Has No Value

by Tommy Dee on June 2nd, 2008 at 8:38 am

Despite possessing a rather large and cap relieving contract, Newsday’s Alan Hahn polled several executives around the NBA in Orlando and received some telling news about troubled Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury.

During the week here at the NBA predraft camp, Newsday polled several team executives, general managers and scouts to see if Marbury, a former all-star, had any trade value at this point. Even with his valuable expiring contract, most said no.

“Personally I don’t think he has much value,” one team executive said. “I don’t know who would want to deal with him.”

Nothing really surprising, as no team in their right mind would take on Marbury’s contract and deal with him for a year. At the trade deadline? Well, I believe that’s a whole different story entirely. Knick fans can only hope that Marbury plays well and keeps his mouth shut, as to entice the possibility of entertaining offers. That said, letting the deal expire is probably the wisest thing to do.

I doubt that the suitors are waiting in line to nab this guy from us. Marbury probably has more value than those execs are willing to give him now, but once the summer really kicks into gear, teams desperate for a stop-gap point might reconsider when the other VIABLE options run dry.

I do not think that Marbury’s presence will affect the offseason game plan. I would really love to see Walsh show his basketball knowledge and cut Jerome James. I would like to see us deal Q Rich and roll with guys like Chandler, Balkman, and maybe Boston Nachbar at the three.

I was reading HOOPSWORLD.COM earlier, and the Nachbar to the Knicks rumor came up again. However, I read another rumor out of the Detroit papers calling for Dumars to offer Michael Jordan Sheed for Okafor and J Rich. I know that this writer only mentioned this as an idea, but still. If Okafor gets dealt this summer, then I want Walsh to really make a push for him. And if Jordan is really willing to deal, then I wonder what it would take to get Felton from there. That is most likely a long shot because the Bobcats have no viable pg to step in and play. Also, they have lived through the growing pains of Felton, and I doubt they want to give him up as he is coming into his own.

DON’T TRADE HIM! So what if he is a cancer. In one year his contract is gone. Do you really think we can get a player or group of players that will have expiring contracts?

I agree. Sit tight on Marbury unless you get a really, really good deal. Crazier things have happened. Ask LA…
