Cavs Interested In Mo Williams… Can We Dump Marbury on Them Instead?

by Chris Alvino on August 12th, 2008 at 12:50 am

It appears that the Cavs are still searching for LeBron Jamesright-hand man as they have apparently expressed interest in Mo Williams of the Bucks. While Williams would be a nice addition to the Cavaliers, I am not entirely sure why the Bucks would give him up without assurance of receiving an upgrade in return. The Bucks have made strides towards “going for it” this season, and in my opinion, are not candidates for dumping their young starting point guard.

So I began thinking… okay, I continued thinking… of more scenarios with the end result of Stephon Marbury sporting anything but a Knicks uniform come this November. And it occurred to me, maybe, just maybe, the Cavs will be desperate enough that they would take Steph off of the Knicks’ hands. I understand that after Steph’s mid-season hissy fit that LeBron proclaimed he would not want to play with a selfish player like Steph, but that was then. Maybe (hopefully?) LeBron would change his mind the first time he saw Steph drive to the hoop in a Cavs uniform and finish with one of his signature kisses off the glass. Let’s face it, while Steph has worn out his welcome with the Knicks, he can still finish at the basket as well as anyone.

So I ask: Knicks fans, would you trade Steph to the Cavs and perhaps receive Ben Wallace’s albatross of contract along with the expiring deal of Eric Snow? Wallace has two seasons left at around 15 million per, give or take a million each season. He is clearly not what he once was with the Pistons. But in the short term, he would provide the Knicks with a much needed shot blocking threat and good interior defense. The Knicks need a backup center, and while I would prefer them to pick up a young/ athletic center, Wallace could fit that bill. A Steph for Wally Szczerbiak and Anderson Varejao deal would also work, but I doubt that the Cavs would want to give up either in order to risk taking on Marbury.

I understand that not many teams out there would want Marbury, including both the Knicks and the Cavs. And Steph, if you are reading this, I truly mean nothing personal, as I still think that you have a good game and an uncanny knack for finishing at the hoop. I simply think that it would be best for the Knicks and yourself if you had a change of scenery. But while the Cavs may not want Marbury, he’s better than what they have. Simply put, if all other options run dry, the Cavs may need Steph. Lucky for them, they have just the awful contract to unload on the Knicks in the event that they actually acquire Marbury.

There you have it: Marbury for Wallace and Snow. I would do it. But would Donnie do it? Would the Cavs do it? Would you, the fans, do it?

Tommy Dee says...I stand by my assertion that the Cavs would never make a deal with the Knicks based on the Lebron-to-NY situation.

Not to mention the fact that they are trying to win, and Marbury’s track record speaks for itself.

Chris Alvino says… Tommy, I agree with you on that to a certain extent. I cannot see the Cavs ever taking Zach Randolph back in a deal because that would essentially give us the cap space to sign LeBron James. In Steph’s case, whether he is here or there will not affect the Knicks’ ability to sign LeBron.

As for Marbury’s track record of losing, you have a good point.  But remember, Steph has never played with LeBron James.  I don’t think that the Cavs would miss the playoffs even if Steph intentionally tried to sabotage the season.

Tommy Dee says… Huh? Why would Lebron want an aging shoot-first, non-defending point guard, who probably still thinks he’s the best player in the NBA? Remember, Lebron calls the shots.
