Knicks To Let Marbury Rot On Bench

by Chris Alvino on November 4th, 2008 at 3:13 pm

According to ESPN’s Andrew Marchand, Donnie Walsh has no intentions of buying out Stephon Marbury. Until further notice, Marbury will remain inactive while D’Antoni continues to play players who he sees as having a place in this franchise’s future. According to Walsh, the case is “closed” on this controversy. D’Antoni claims that Marbury is still here because:

“…It is a lot of money. He has a contract, rightly so. If somebody gets hurt, we might need him. Why not? Steph has been great. He is part of the team. We are trying to do what is best for the Knicks…”

Walsh echoes this a bit, stating that Marbury is still on this team because “he is a good player.” Interestingly, D’Antoni thinks that this situation is “resolved.”

This has to be some kind of joke. With all due respect, it is clear that D’Antoni has not been in New York for that long. Problems do not get “resolved” in this city by pushing them off to the side and hoping that people forget about them. If this team doesn’t come out and start showing fans positive signs, the chants for Marbury, who is arguably the most talented player on the roster, will resonate louder than ever. But again, I am not a huge Marbury fan. The Knicks have not won with him in the past, and there is very little reason to believe that they would be able to win with him in the future. On that level, I personally respect Coach Mike’s decision.

When the team starts winning on a consistent basis, it will be easier to accept this decision. But the Knicks have not won on a consistent basis in years. While D’Antoni and Walsh have enjoyed long tenures of success in recent seasons, Knicks fans are starving for a winning product. Watching players such as Anthony Roberson finding ten or so minutes in a game while Steph is sitting in street clothes is tough to swallow. Is Roberson any more a part of this team’s long-term future than Steph is? My bet is that neither is here next season.

If D’Antoni does not want Steph to see the court, I am fine with that even though I do not agree with it. But if Walsh and D’Antoni actually think that this situation is dead, I regret to inform them that things work a bit differently here in New York. So long as Marbury is on the Knicks’ roster, this situation will survive. If the season takes a turn for the worse, this Marbury situation might do the same. Hopefully Walsh and D’Antoni are right. Hopefully this situation dies down. But if recent years have told me anything, things are not that easy in the Big Apple.

    good for walsh…

let him rot and his enormous salary will melt off the books next year. He prob enjoys sitting there doing nothing and taking in a $21 milion salary.

    What a waste of talent

  • casey s.

What surprises me most is that Marbury is so ho-hum about the whole thing. Maybe he has lost his will to play?

  • Laydenstinks

prob more so that he realizes for doing squat he is making $21 million…that’d prob keep anyone quiet

yes the knick fans are starving for a winning product but we are realistic…we are not winning this year (unfortunately)

lets hope walsh is right ( i think he is) and the payroll will be reduced drastically

  • Chris Alvino

    Great comments.

Casey- I think that is a fair point to make about Marbury’s desire to play. Marbury has nearly 22 million reasons to keep his mouth shut, but you are right. He doesn’t give off an impression that he is really dying to be out there. That said, he did come into camp in great shape. Even though he said that he believed he was a starter in this league, he did not fuss too badly about riding the pine. During the pre-season, Marbury played a team brand of basketball. He looked as though he was buying into what D’Antoni wanted.

Laydenstinks- You speak like a logical Knicks fan, and I appreciate that. The chances of the Knicks winning are not greatly enhanced with Marbury on the floor. But, who is to say that Marbury does not at least help? The Knicks have looked sluggish over the last two games, unable to get anything going offensively. Usually when a team cannot shoot the ball (like the Knicks in the last two games), they attack the hoop. Like him or not, there is no one better than Marbury on this roster at getting to the rim.

However, it is nice to see Walsh and D’Antoni set this kind of precedent. No one gets a free pass on this team anymore. The season is still young and discipline takes time. While this might not matter for Stephon, a player like Eddy Curry should pay careful attention to this saga.

  • Laydenstinks

chris – Marbury does have the most “talent” on the roster

(although i think in some time wilson chandler has a shot on surpassing him…love the spin in the low post move he developed)

but he is getting what he deserves. He has had shot after shot…chance after chance yet every time is all about “Starbury”. He came into camp in great shape and wanted to” win and play hard” but life does not work like that…especially under a no nonsense coach and GM.

Finally the front office has the power to lay down the law and ist all due to them working together (un like the prior Thomas debacle of an era) The unified front from D’antoni + Walsh outweighs his antics and BS moves and I love it!

As for Curry – i want players who appreicate being in the league, play/tarin hard and get tough during stretches of poor play. He fails in each criteria and unless he puts down the cupcakes and changes his attitude then he might as well get comfy next to starbury

  • Laydenstinks

    wow excuse my poor spelling…

  • Chris Alvino

Layden- I have told friends that I think Chandler might be the best player on the team by the end of the season. While I exaggerated a bit, I am also very high on him. He is going to be an absolute player going forward.

  • BiggieSmalls

The only thing making a big stink will do is get him fined for insubordination and turn off anyone who will give him a contract next year.

He probably has his mind set on Italy or Europe next year anyway.

His silence and Dantoni/Walsh’s inactive plan is part of the negotiation to get his contract bought out. Maybe after a week or so on the pine he will get more serious about a buyout. He can obviously make the $$ up with a vet minimum contract and start fresh.

  • Kid Tarheel

I love that Walsh and D’Antoni are lying down the law. Its their team. Not our team. Not Marbury’s team. The knicks have been operated too long to satisfy the back page and and to acquiesce to the fans desires. Marbury should never set foot on the floor again for the Knicks. He is a brooding, moody, overrated prima-donna.

The fact is, Marbury has a very valuable contract. Keeping him on the team is best for the team. Didn’t we learn a lesson from buying out Jalen Rose when an unhappy Kevin Garnett became available. There may not be a fit to trade Marbury right now, but there very well might be one in the future. If no trade becomes apparent, then he comes off the books.

The real task for Knicks fans is to show some patience. I always have heard the New York fans won’t accept rebuilding- well, we accepted being shitty because we didn’t rebuild. I think we have a chance to bring basketball back to NY, and I love that the men in charge have the correct mindset to do so.

  • michaelspo

    folks…

lets not forget marbury waled away from the team last year in on the west coast road trip!

and lets also not forget that he took way to much time off after his father died. i do not want to hear sh_t about having to grieve the loss. when my mother died i took off a week…. and that was all i wa allowed to take. 99% of the people working regular jobs would lose their job if they left for 2+ months.

fuk marbury.. he put himself in this position – not the coach or president of operations.

    simple

  • Chris Alvino

Agreed. If anyone feels sorry for Marbury, then they have clearly not paid attention to his career. Marbury deserves to be banished. He does not, however, deserve to make 22 million.

That said, what is the point of keeping him around if you are not going to play him? Does Roberson help this team win more than Marbury could?

  • Knicksfan42793

Chris, you and I are sharing the same brain here. I don’t care if Marbury is the starter or the second option. But if you are not going to buy him out or trade him, then you have to play him. Nothing is working right now for the Knicks. No one is driving to the rim except Chandler. The whole team is settling for jump shots and most of all they are not making them. Marbury will help the Knicks more than Mardy Collins or Anthony Roberson can. Marbury can drive to the rim and then if he doesn’t have the shot he can kick it out to Crawford or anyone else for 3. If they make their shots than Marbury can drive to the rim and go for an easy two. Whether you want to admit it or not, Marbury has talent and can help this team. I would be fine if they trade him but you have to play him if you aren’t going to do anything about it.

  • Chris Alvino

Could not have put it better myself.

I understand trying to play young players that will help in the future, but is Roberson really a part of this team’s future?

  • headbishop

maybe its just me but does it even matter? The Knicks are not winning any championships in the next year/two/three years. If we need to keep Marbury on the bench, let it be. If D’Antoni wants to play for the future, let it be.

Throw the money out the window till 2010, because it just doesn’t matter with this team until we get under the cap

  • Kid Tarheel

You guys are missing it- the only reason they are keeping him around is the off chance they can use his contract to better the team. Other wise a buyout would be THE EXACT SAME THING as letting him waste away on the bench.

A secondary scenario is that D’Antoni is using him to assert his will on the team. So be it. That is the only positive contribution he has ever had while on the knicks.

    Jalen Rose.

  • Knicksfan42793

We can keep arguing about this but the fact of the matter is the Knicks have to beat the Bucks, they just have to. Until they start winning this story will never end and we will hear everyday.

  • michaelspo

    headbishop!
    well said.

at best if marbury plays – maybe the knicks win 3-6 more games.

marbury is not liked by his teammates. he is not liked by the head coach.

look at it this way. if you want to get married and build a future – you do not go to the bar and sleep with the easy girl because you can. you wait, look for the right girl and hopefully she comes along. marbury is the easy solution. he is good for an extra easy 15 points a game, he is good for a few assists… but he is no good for your self respect as a team.
he has done NOTHING in his 4+ (active) seasons with the Knicks. No playoffs, no memories….. nothing.

i am a knicks fan. my mother also went to lincoln HS. i love NYC ballers…. I have NO LOVE FOR STARBURY..

he walked away from the team last year 2x folks.. (and i am not even getting into this elective surgery)..

    people…

lets kill the marbury thread. Lets never mention him like we will not talk about the super sonics.

  • BiggieSmalls

name the player that is going to come on the market that will cause Donnie to deviate from his LeBron in 2010 plan?

Kobe? who else? Dont say Carmelo Anthony or Shawn Marion

Bringing in any max contracts in exchange for Marbury will necessitate taking on long term money that will further handicap the plan.

Marbury needs to come off the books this year — And there is STILL fat to trim to get in a position to lure a Lebron or Bosh here.

I say we bacg this year and hope for Ricky Rubio or that other Freshman PG who went to Europe to fall in our laps.

  • Chris Alvino

Michaelspo- I like your bar comparison. I think that is hysterical.

Fans, I beg you, do not root for this team to lose. The Knicks have played three games and there is already talk of tanking this season. Why go out and play then if you are trying to lose? Please, we have to root for this team to win. The top player in the draft is not always the number one overall pick. I’d rather see the Knicks in the playoffs than see them with a top three pick.

I am not saying that I am content with just reaching the playoffs. What I am saying is that this franchise cannot simply wait for a savior to come along. This team has to fight to win now. If we lose, then so be it. But tank the season? After three games?

  • BiggieSmalls

I was not advocating a complete tank. Just realize that we have a long road to hoe to get to respectability. No one wants to try to lose but I would hope for competitive, exciting games with players I can actually root for. Save from Lee none of those players exist on this roster. Maybe chandler and Gallo join that group by the end of the year but I would gladly sacrifice any player on this roster for the chance to compete for a title.

To think this roster at 90 some million dollars (near twice the salary cap) and stocked .with perennial losers has the capacity to compete in the playoffs is a dream. Who wants to get 4 playoff games as an 8 seed and get sent home to continue this charade? That is not progress to the ultimate goal of competing for a title as we did in the Ewing Years.

The NBA is a league of superstars and without bonafide superstars you are on the outside looking in. Granted Detroit competed without a game changing player but that is the exception not the rule.

  • michaelspo

    Hey KNICKS “Yes We Can”

  • Chris Alvino

Biggie- Look at the Sixers. They did not have a big time superstar last year. They still made the playoffs. With their new superstar, Brand, they look poised to compete for the Eastern Conference championship. If you think that last year’s surprising success is not a factor in this year’s prediction, then I am going to disagree.

The Knicks making the playoffs this year will create a buzz and a positive vibe in New York, even if they go 4 and out.

  • MuMu

    Chris Alvino-

As you said as a fan i do want this team to make the playoffs and did have high hopes, thinking they could become a potential 8th seed just for the fact that it would make playoff basketball and the Knicks relevant. Some analyst even picked the Knicks to squeeze in just as the ATL Hawks did although we would not put up a fight against Boston). However with the coaches choice to not play Marbury and to force me to see Mardy Collins at the point shows me that the playoffs are no longer in the picture and that im looking at another good draft pick.

  • BiggieSmalls

    Chris-
Using the Sixers as an example. They made trades to get under the cap so that they could have a chance to get a player like Brand.

This Knicks Team – at 95 million in Salary has no chance to get under the 58 million dollar cap unless the large contracts go away. Even if Malik and Marbury expire we be at 70 million.. And that is without extending Lee or Nate.

Buying out Marbury (and Malik for that matter) is part of the process to get where the Sixers where last year. We have to make drastic moves with this roster this year in order to seriously compete in the future.

  • Kid Tarheel

There is no deviation from the plan if you keep Marbury around to see if his contract can be flipped into something else. Listen to the flow of logic… Marbury will not play- but we won’t buy him out. Ummm… that makes it seem like if we’re gonna pay him, we might as well see what happens.

Listen, without getting rid of Randolph, we have no chance for Lebron and Co. Its very likely that Bosh, Wade AND Lebron would RATHER a sign and trade than a straight FA signing. Each player can get an extra year and more guaranteed cash from the home team. Donnie knows that. So if the right scenario of players arises, then perhaps any players we get in return can be used as trade fodder. Look, I’m not saying its gonna happen… but it could. And there is no way we would ever find out if we waived Marbury now. it makes no sense at all.

And as far as who that player might be– who would have predicted the Garnett trade the season b4, or the Gasol, trade the way it worked out. Some team may yearn for cap space come february- and if its a scenario that works for the knicks, then they have the perfect bait..

    Sit and wait.

    Jalen Rose.
