Knicks Land Harrington

by Andrew Smith on November 21st, 2008 at 1:11 pm

A source in the NBA has confirmed to TKB that the New York Knicks have officially acquired 6’9″ forward Al Harrington from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Jamal Crawford.

Three quick thoughts….

1. 11 million off the books in 2010-11

2. Can Harrington play the role of Amare Stoudemire in D’Antoni’s system?

3. Jamal, you always played your heart out and tried to play the role of team leader in an impossible situation. Thanks for all of your efforts and good luck in the Bay Area.

    [welcome] crawford!

The Knicks should have their heads examined for swapping these two players straight up. Every player mentioned in these rumors would have made some sense, but giving up Crawford tunrs it into disaster. I would laugh at all these teams if I was LeBron. Theres not only this year, but the year after that still to play! Harrington clogs up the spot for Lee, Chandler and Randolph, and still gives us yet another fake center who is not as good a basketball player as Jamal Crawford. period

Jamal was an example of total professionalism during his time here. I hoped that he might be around when the ship was righted but this is a tough business. I thank him for his hard work and commitment to the New York Knicks and wish him all the best in Golden State.

Good riddance…nothing against him personally, but to me Jamal epitomized the last eight years of the Knicks…he got his money based on talent, before proving anything…as a Knick fan who grew up watching the 90′s Knicks, it made me sick to see a younger generation of fans having to grow up watching Marbury and Crawford take their paychecks and watch the team crater around them without improving on tremendous holes in their games that were repeatedly exposed…for me, the last straw was Sunday night’s loss to Dallas, when Crawford made absolutely no effort to go for the ball when the team was tied on their last possession…the guy says all the right things, looks great at times, but when it comes down to it, he was a loser…he was born to be the best player on a 23 win team and I think all of us are tired of seeing the Knicks win 23 games…I got caught up in this team the past few weeks, but the truth of the matter is, this year and next are irrelevant…it is all about 2010…we still owe a draft pick to Phoenix and if we are expecting to work twoards 2010, let’s be bad this year, get one more good young player and then next year make our push to start getting better in order to attract when of the best free agents…lastly…the biggest thing about this trade is the culture..Walsh and D’antoni have restored order to the team. Before, it was the players running things. They would play hard when they wanted and if things went bad, the KNicks would just buy them out. They’d get their money and there would be no repercussions. Marbury leaves the team, nothing happens. Curry shows up out of shape, nothing happens. Crawford demands to be treated and paid like a franchise player, but he won’t play defense or do the dirty work necessary, nothing happens. Well, now, things are happening and I love it.

here comes another 23 win season… if we don’t get lebron i’m converting to a grizzlies fan

How is Harrington any better? Does this mean we have to actually watch Mardy Collins play basketball now? I’d love to see how many Knicks fans will stay with us while watching Mardy Collins for 2 more years. Two years is a long time, why dont we just start running a campaign for the next president right now too..

Not for nothing but now we giving jamal props?
As knicks fans we wanted every 1 out except the 3 young guys (wilson, lee, nate)
We got 1 down a couple more to go this is just to show how much of a genious these 2 guys running the knicks are I bet in the start of the season no 1 wanted knicks players except david lee.
Now mike got all these guys playin awesome and teams are starting to get interested which is why I think coach is doing fine playing these guys because all he’s really doing till lebron gets here is showcasing these guys for pontential trades
    Lets go knicks!

Those against this trade, are you crazy? Answer 1 questions for me… Where did you expect the Knicks to finish this year?
    A playoff team?
    1st Round Exit
    2nd Round Exit
    Eastern Division Champs?

How can we complain about moving all this money off our books in preparation for the LeBron/Wade/Bosh sweepstakes in 2010. No matter how good our team would be with Jamal still on it, we are not winning a championsip (100% certain!!) Not even a Villanova 1985 like upset could ever get us into the Eastern Conf Finals.

Is the team better this year – Answer = No
Were we winning a title either way = No
Is our team better off in the long term after the trade = YES!

and thats what matters… we should all thank Donny Walsh for taking us on this new franchise ride of hope that starts with this trade.

I’m just glad the new regime doesn’t listen to the idiot knick fans. We have a decent stable of guards. One of them was starting at POWER FORWARD!! Most Knicks fans need to get their heads examined.

With that said, I love this move. The stated goal is to get better each year while clearing cap space for the best free agent class of all time. That to me sounds like the smartest thing anyone in charge of a New York sports team has ever said. This seems to help accomplish both goals. Harrington is an athletic, sharp shooting big man who should fit right into D’Antoni’s system, where we have a glaring lack of athletic sharp shooting big men.

As for Crawford- I will miss him and his double crossover splash in your eye game. He was always good for jumping off of the couch in disbelief bc you couldn’t believe what he just did. He always had a smile on his face and he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. I am sad to see him go.

I think Donnie and the Knicks have done the most prudent thing they could have done: they didn’t act hastily in the offseason when everyone was calling for absurd trades. The let D’Antoni take the temperature of everyone on the team (sorry Balkman) and figure out who stays and who goes. I’m certain that if Crawford was right for this team, he would not have been shipped even if he was one of the only true bargaining chips that we had. And its with a bitter taste in my mouth that I say– David Lee should be next.
