Walsh Seeking Pick As Compensation?
According to Frank Isola of the NY Dailynews, Donnie Walsh might be seeking an additional draft pick as compensation for receiving an “unhealthy” Cuttino Mobley. Isola suggests that Walsh might even be seeking a 1st rounder to sweeten the deal. Their 2010 1st rounder would sweeten it nicely!
According to YahooSports.com, Donnie Walsh might be taking his time to complete this deal as a way to leverage himself against Mike Dunleavy. As one Western Conference exec stated,
“Donnie’s a pro, he knows what he’s doing.”
If the report that Tommy posted the other night about Donnie asking for Camby was true, then I would not be surprised to see Walsh hold out for a pick. As we have already seen, Donnie would make this deal without it, but you have to ask yourself, which team needs this deal more? The 2-10 Clippers need more offensive pop and need to start turning their season around. The Knicks need their cap space. With the buzz that has been created in New York by these moves, Walsh would have to have another deal in place in order to forego any type of deal with the Clippers. This is an interesting situation, and instead of spending any more time speculating on it, I will go on trusting Donnie’s judgement. He’s earned it.

I can’t see how the Clippers include a first-rounder in this deal which, at this rate, would be a top-five selection. There are reports that the Clippers are close to dealing Chris Kaman to Charlotte in exchange for Jason Richardson, which was obviously the second domino to fall after this deal. I think Walsh asks for a second-rounder, and when he is denied, he accepts Mobley’s failed physical and we move on.
