Lining up for a Marbury trade?

by Tommy Dee on December 8th, 2008 at 4:43 pm

I think I’m like most fans in that, aside from watching them play well, I get excited about the prospects of adding pieces to the puzzle. And with the apparent looming retirement (nice job Marc Berman for that scoop) of Mobley and the end of the Marbury fiasco sooner before later, the Knicks will have two roster spots to fill.

That would allow the assumption that the team is ready to fill them with young cheap pieces.

Or does it?

Remember, the biggest reason the Knicks haven’t been able to move Marbury is that they can’t find a suitor for a one-for-one deal. But now if Mobley is out of the picture, the possibilities of a 2-for-1 exist. Walsh himself admitted that the lack of roster wiggle room has made it impossible to move Steph. I’d be hard-pressed not to believe that Walsh hasn’t mulled a decent 2-for-1 swap over these past few months.

I’m not buying any Marion swap, so what other possible deals could be out there? One of the few that comes to mind here is a deal with Sacramento that would bring back Brad Miller and Bobby Jackson.

If that doesn’t blow your socks off there is a laundry list of serviceable options that Walsh can choose from. We know this, whether via trade (long shot) or a signed sayonara, Marbury will be gone, and I feel Ewing Jr. will return in his stead, unless Walsh can pull of said 2-for-1. It makes sense that he would try because you clould be getting back two serviceable veterans who can help towards a playoff push.

Alan Hahn stated a possible Stackhouse-for-Malik Rose deal, which I scoffed at- at first- because I’d like to think that they can get some more size with Rose’s expiring deal. But then I came to realize that the situation in Dallas could become so uncomfortable, getting a contract for Stack (and maybe a second rounder) may be worth it for the Mavs. The question becomes does Stack play the 2 (and can he guard 2s), and don’t they already have a Stack in Quentin Richardson, who’s played well? Jerry ain’t the athlete he used to be.

They need to balance this roster out and I still maintain that Chris Duhon could use some help at the point. But if you want to tell me they need a shooter, I’ll buy it.

I liked Alvino’s take on Morris Almond, who’s been buried in Utah and even the fans wouldn’t be sad to see him go. But has he proven to be anything better than Demetrius Nichols?

I mean, the difference between a D-leaguer and a player toiling on the bench is so slim. And I feel fans are often duped by what I call “The Ray Jackson Syndrome ” – as in remembering a player because he played on a college team that was often on TV or had success, without really seeing that they weren’t that good- after the former Fab 5 member.

People, Gerry McNamara is NOT an NBA player.

So, it’s an exciting time because you’ll see fresh faces soon, should Mobley retire, and Donnie will add pieces that should help, and he’ll utilize every avenue.

So my question for you is:

Should Cuttino Mobley Retire, what two players do you want to then fill the roster when Marbury is finally banished?

I say bring in Marcus Williams, i feel he has huge upside. The same goes for Patrick Ewing Jr. The Knicks in my opinion should try to be more like the giants and treat there players more like a family. Give the players more time to develop like Nate Robinson and David Lee. Give the fans good players to root for over a longer period of time. Like the Yankees with Jeter and other players and the Giants with Strahan and Toomer. I know this is hard especially playing in New York with the media the way it is. I think we could really benefit from this.

Fred Jones is a FA, and would be solid player off the bench. He can defend, has a pretty good shot, and can take the ball to the rim. He could be signed pretty cheaply, and can be in the short term plans for the Knicks

StarMarbury- For a team looking towards the future, your thought makes sense. If we are trying to allow our players to grow together as a team, then a young player with talent like Williams would make great sense. He figures to be a career back-up and would be able to excel in that role here.

JF1- When you are as desperate as the Knicks, Fred Jones would absolutely be welcomed. However, I don’t view him as anything more than a last resort for this team. I’d much prefer to roll the dice on Williams than take back Fred Jones.

Hahn also mentions Sergio Rodriguez for the trade exception. That would be interesting for us. He looks like a good young player. And before anyone mixes them up, he is not Rudy Fernandez, who is a 6’5 guard that can can be instant offense who also comes off the Portland bench. I used to get those two mixed up a bit.

wish we had some chips to trade for the Nets Sean Williams,
and sure Marcus Williams would be fine

Forget Starbury. How about this 3 way trade…

    Dallas gets:
    Gerald Wallace
    Adam Morrison
    Jerome James

    Charlotte gets:
    Josh Howard
    Malik Rose

    New York gets:
    Raymond Felton
    Jerry Stackhouse
    Draft Picks

    …?

Nevermind. I just realized why this trade doesn’t make sense. Dallas could just trade Howard for Wallace straight-up if they wanted.

So we get rid of Jerome James and Malik Rose while getting Ray Felton, Stack, and draft picks? It sounds like we give up nothing (possibly negative value) and get back two rotational players and picks.

Hey, I am all in but I doubt that the Bobcats or Mavericks would be. I would think that if the Bobcats really wanted Howard, they would then just work with the Mavs on their own.

    Good idea though.

I think Ray Felton is pretty damn good. He has some good value, especially considering that he plays nearly 40 minutes per game.

  • Chris Alvino

Sorry, nearly 36 minutes per game.

Its time to fix another one of Zeke’s errors and bring Marcus Williams into the fold. He should have been drafted by the Knicks in 2006 instead of Balkman.

Its quite sickening when you look back at that draft and see who the Knicks could have picked at #2. Instead we have the Stay Puff marshmellow man. Thanks again Isaiah.

I think they should trade for Marcus Williams and then sign Patrick Ewing Jr.
