Get to the line!

by Tommy Dee on December 10th, 2008 at 11:54 am

Al Harrington has been a great addition, I feel, since joining the team several weeks ago. And when you study his game there are some great qualities. He’s a good shooter who can go off and is shooting 50% from the field and 37% from behind the arc in December.

But the telling stat for me, and a major reason why he isn’t an elite player in this league, yet, is that he fails to get to the line.

He settles.

Considering that he’s 250 lbs and has a solid low post game, D’Antoni needs to feature him more there so he can get to the line.

He hasn’t shot a FT in his last 4 games.

That is unacceptable. The team needs to do a better job of getting to the line as a whole. They shoot it well from the line as a team (80%) but they’ve missed Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford getting to the stripe 10 times a game on average.

Look for D’Antoni to stress that more, and for Walsh to think about that as he looks to make improvements moving forward.

4th quarter team FTs over the past 5 games

vs Portland 3-3
vs Cleveland 2-2
vs Atlanta 1-1
vs Detroit 3-3
vs Chicago 0-0

Definitely agree with your assessment of Al. I really like him as a player. He’s one of those very tough guys to gaurd, since he can do it all. My only other beef with him is that he doesnt look to pass enough. Hes good at beating his man, which should open up a lot of assist opportunities, but he’ll instead take a shot with another man in his face. I dont think he should be pass-first, but just look for an open man more than he does.
