Charles Smith…You know, the guy who missed all those layups?

Bloomberg as a story out that mentioned Charles Smith taking over as president for the NBARPA and made it clear that he missed a few layups once while playing for the Knicks.

…” Dec. 15 (Bloomberg) — Former New York Knick Charles Smith was named the executive director of the National Basketball Retired Players Association.

Smith, a 10-year National Basketball Association veteran, assumes the post after serving as a regional representative for the NBA Players Association. He’ll oversee all aspects of the retired players’ association, including fundraising, marketing, member relations and community outreach.

The 43-year-old Smith averaged 14.4 points and 4.8 assists as a forward for the Los Angeles Clippers, Knicks and San Antonio Spurs during his career.

He played for New York from the 1992-93 to 1995-96 seasons, and is probably best known for failing to score on four straight attempts from under the basket that would have given the Knicks the lead in the fifth game of their Eastern Conference Final series against Chicago in 1993. New York lost the series after opening up a 2-0 lead.

As true as this is, is it really necessary to drop in a negative note on a positive day? Many people remember Smith as being traded for fan favorite Mark Jackson. I don’t know, I’m angry as the next guy that Smith didn’t bang it, but getting stuck under the basket with 4 guys on your back taking away your angle and saying he “missed 4 straight attempts” is a little misleading.

Congrats Charles.

It’s not just that Charles missed 4 lay ups. It’s that he didn’t go up strong on any of those lay ups. Had he gone up strong to the rim, he would have gotten a call.
I can still see those flailing arms.
