Blazers Getting Ready to Move in on Lee
By Tommy Dee - Jan 4, 2009 12:16 pm

Several sources with knowledge of the situation have told TKB that the Portland Trailblazers are getting serious about trading for David Lee.

Blazers ownership thinks Lee is the perfect 6th man who will be 26 in April and can be part of their long term plans. As we know Lee has leverage because he doesn’t have to sign with a team he is traded to, but playing in Portland with their young core would be very attractive.

The Blazers’ organization feels Lee’s style of play would fit perfectly in Portland as he can play in both the half court system and get out and run as well as any forward in the NBA. Plus he’d be a “flex” forward who could make them a big half court team or a smaller quicker team depending if he subbed in for LaMarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden or Nicolas Batum.

The question now becomes what do the Blazers give up in order to match what the Knicks need. We’ve said Donnie Walsh might move Lee with Curry as a means to get Curry’s contract off the books. But there isn’t great rush in moving Curry at this point because he is under contract next year. Since they were able to move Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford, there isn’t any desperation. At some point they want to move Big Ed, but it doesn’t have to be at the expense of Lee especially with his value being quite high. ESPN reported that Walsh turned down the Nuggests offer of Chucky Atkins and two first round picks for the former 30th overall pick.

The Knicks may be interested in Jerryd Bayless, who has fallen behind Sergio Rodriguez on their depth chart, and whom the team passed on in this year’s draft or Rodriguez , but the combination of either and a first round pick won’t be enough to entice Walsh. This is where a third team may get involved.

TKB was the first outlet to report the Clippers involvement on November 21 in talks for Zach Randolph. We were also the first to learn that Stephon Marbury would suit up against the Bucks, a sure sign that the Randolph trade would go through since the incoming players would not play and the team needed to dress 8 players, an NBA rule.

Interesting stuff may be in the works so stay tuned as we stay on it…

not sure whats happening on the Lee could be a goner thread.. Some posts dissappeared.

Anyway.. I cant see Channing Frye coming back to NYC. Got to believe that if there is a three way Charlotte is involved.. Maybe they take Channing because of his history with Larry Brown.

I could concoct a three way like this

Portland sending Bayless to NY and Channing/Raef Lafrenz to Charlotte
NY sending Lee and Malik to Portland And Tim Thomas to Charlotte
Charlotte sending Adadm Morrison to Portland and Raja/Diaw to NYC

We end up with Bayless, Raja and Diaw for Lee, TT and Malik.
Charlotte gets a big expiring contract and TT and Channing who Larry loves.
Portland gets Lee ,Malik’s chanpionship experience and Adam Morrison to try to rekindle his career.

It doesnt work until trade deadline but helps us today and in 2010

LaMarcus Aldridge, right everyone……..

Just joking. But the other day I mentioned that the Blazers will be a serious suitor for Lee. He is exactly what they are looking for right now.

The Blazers have some nice young players. I like Rudy Fernandez a lot. I like Bayless. But if we deal Lee, I would like to get a young forward / center back.

Perhaps Chicago could be a third team involved in this. I would love to get Ty Thomas.

But again, Portland has the type of young pieces that the Knicks should be looknig for in any deal for Lee. Guys like Bayless and Fernandez will have team options totaling about 4 million in 2010. By then, either can prove to be a starter in this league.

This was the post from gym rat Bathija who apparently has serious ties to the Clips/

I haven’t been able to confirm this from my clippers source yet…

…the trade will send Marcus Camby and Channing Frye back to the Knicks along with Deandre Jordan from a trade exception, Jerryd Bayless and Jason Hart.

The Trail Blazers will receive David Lee and Anthony Roberson from the Knicks and Brian Skinner and Ricky Davis from the Clippers.

The Clippers will receive Quentin Richardson, Malik Rose and Sergio Rodriguez. One source has said the trade should be complete by next week. All salaries/.roster spots work out for all teams….

no pressure Tommy– I was just looking for it cause I wanted to run it thru trade machine.
Needless to say I dont like this one from the NYK perspective. Frye is nailed to the bench in Portland and seems to have regressed. Getting Camby back doesnt sound great. I lked Bayless coming out so that is one nice piece that is unused in Portland.

I still like my three way better for all parties.

My condolences to anyone who has ties to the Clips..
I understand their logjam but Kaman has been hurt and wont be returning anytime soon. Ricky Davis is hurt too. And Brian Skinner should not be in the league

Q Rich back to the Clips makes less sense with Baron Davis still there.

DeAndre Jordan would be an interesting project.

Where there is smoke there is fire.. lots of interesting scenarios out there.. Toronto is going to have a fire sale soon as well.. And I hear the Sixers are ready to move players again.

Eeehhhhhh…….. it’s not awful ,but I think we can do better for Lee. I know you love Diaw, so I give your deal the benefit of the doubt. I am not as high on Diaw and his contract. I think his contract can be 9 million per year better spent on a better player.

By the way, I asked Tommy and Andrew this question the other day…. with Charlotte willing to deal Wallace, would the Knicks rather take Gerald Wallace or Boris Diaw?

They both make about the same money, but Wallce has one extra year. I like Wallace better. Tommy likes Diaw…. who does everyone else like better?

Doesnt Diaw do so much more than Gerald Wallace? Including make players around him better.

plus.. the thing I LIKE about Diaw’s contract is it is 9 mil a year .. every year.. no cap creep.

Wallace’s goes from 8.2 to 9.0 to 9.8 to 10.6 to 11.5 (ouch)

Watch alot of bobcats games bc I live in the area. Wallace is AWESOME some nights and awful on others. It doesn’t seem like an effort thing. He has the ability to play good defense, but doesn’t always. He is incredibly explosive. His jumpshot has much to be desired. All in all, I would say pass on Wallace. He would turn in to a guy that NY fans would love to hate.

The Blazers will not want to deal their two backup point guards and bring in two shooting guards, Well, Roberson would never play. But they will not deal their two young points and get back Davis, who will not be on the team next year, and Roberson, who might not ever make it out ot Portland.

They have a bunch of young swing men. Fernandez, Batum, Outlaw, Webster….. they will deal from strength. I think they want to keep Fernandez. Webster could be dealt, as he is supposed to come back soon. Outlaw is one guy that they like out there, but hey, to get Lee they have to give up a lot.

But they will not deal their two 22 and under pgs without getting a pg back.

Also, if we are dealing Lee in a big deal like that, we should look to ditch Jeffries deal. His 6 million will not kill us in 2010, but we would be bettter off signing someone else with the MLE this off-season to take that Jeffries salary slot. Who knows, we might be able to get a good veteran with the MLE…. someone that simply wants to play in NY (I am keeping my fingers crossed on Artest).

How does gettng Camby back not sound great? contract expires before 2010, averaging 12 points 13 boards 3 blocks, and over his last three games he’s had 24, 17, and 23 rebounds.

Camby’s shot blocking would be welcome. And he could pick up the C duties no question. Maybe I was redirecting my Channing Frye negativity.

But the Clips are without Kaman and Zbo right now.. and as Chris says Portland would be giving away two guards for no back court help.

It works out to Camby for Q Rich and Malik then Channing and Bayless for Lee.

I just think we can do better. But I like that there are other teams getting involved.

Getting back Camby sounds fantastic.

But the deal proposed by the Clips source does not sound realistic.

For the Clips, they deal their starting center and their young center in Jordan.

The Blazers deal their two backup point guards and don’t get one back.

Also, if there ever was a time for Portland to make a move for Mike Conley, now would be it. They can offer Bayless and Fernandez for him. A deal centered around Bayless and Conley would make sense for me. The Blazers want Conley because of his ties to Oden. If I were the Blazers GM, I would do anything to get Oden feeling as comfortable as possible.

For the Grizz, Conley does not appear to be working out. Bayless has almost as high a celing (if not higher) as Conley. Give them Conley and either another young player or a first round pick, and that might be able to get it done.

Also, like I mentioned above, I think Bargnani would be a decent gamble for this team.

The other day, I asked what big men that have been drafted in the last three drafts could be attractive for us in a deal for Lee. My mentioning of LaMarcus Aldridge sparked this topic.

I forget who, but one commentor mentioned Spencer Hawes. I doubt that the Kings would look for Lee going into his potential walk year, so scratch them off the list.

Bargnani fits my description, and he appears to have worn out his welcome in Toronto. As a former number one overall pick, you can call him a bust. In 2.5 seasons, he is averaging about 11 ppg and 4 rpg, while connecting on about 36% of his three point attempts. Translation: he is a soft big man. But this year he is averaging about 1.5 blocks per game, which is not bad and would be welcome on this team.

Bargnani was the #1 pick in a weak draft class (other than Roy, Aldridge, and Gay). But he was #1 nonetheless. And let’s be honest, while not playing like a #1 pick, he is not Mike Olowakandi by any stretch. I think that Walsh should make a play for him. Maybe D’Antoni can help him get acclamated to the league with his experience with Italian hoops as well as with his offensive based system. Also, much like how Portland should look to make Oden feel comfortable, we should look to do the same for Gallo. Who knows, maybe Bargnani, with increased minutes (he would play at least 35 minutes per game in NY), his numbers would jump to about 16 and 6 /7 rpg. I would take that.

The issue is that Toronto needs and wants wing help. That is where Portland comes into play. As noted above, Portland has a laudnry list of nice young wing players. They want Lee. A package that would net us Bargnani, Bayless, and possibly Webster/ Fernandez/ or a first round pick, while getting Jeffries off this team, might not be a terrible deal.

Walsh has to try and get some kind of picks out of this deal, even if they are 2nd round picks. It is all about acquiring assets. You never know who is around in the second round, and as we saw last year, acquiring them on draft night is not always easy. Walsh claimed that he would have had to pay a huge ransom to move up to pick Mario Chalmers or DeAndre Jordan.

I was thinking about Bargnani as well..

How about this..

Marbury, Chandler and Jeffries, and trade exception for Jermaine Oneil, Brgnani and the rights to Carlos Delfino?

It would give the Raps some quick cap relief and shake things up.. Ill Will could slot in next to Bosh in Canada and Jeffries could work next to Bosh well..

Delfino is in Russia anyway bot could be coaxed back and Andreas may be worth a shot for a change of scenery teaming up with Gallo. J.O.’s contract expires next year and gives us the cap room to play in 2010

Big- I feel like we do not agree on much, so this is a nice common ground. At least we both see the potential and size of Bargnani and how they might flourish under coach Mike.

I would be shocked if the Knicks dealt Chandler. Not saying that he is untradable, but with his upside, versatility, potential to defend, and most importantly, his manageable contract, I just don’t see it.

You have to figure that Toronto would do that in a second though.

I have long said that a JO / Marbury swap would work.

Going back to the beginning of last season, i thought that a Marbury, Curry for Tinsley, O’Neal deal would work.

O’Neal is one of the couple of guys that Marbury can actually be dealt for this season. My guess is that Marbury does not get dealt.

And to be honest, if Walsh makes a deal to bring in all these able bodies, there is a good shot that Marbury does not get bought out at all. What would be his reason to? He would have to be enticed to do so by another team that Marbury would sign with…. such as a pick swap in an upcoming draft.

Pare this up with my other three way and you end up with

J.O./E.C. Center
Bargnani/Gallo/Diaw/A.H. Forwards
Qrich/DelFino Swings
Bell/Duhon/Nate/Bayless

with Snacks at the end of the bench. sign PEjr to replace Cuttino and do what you want with Roberson — cut him for a d league PG until the 09 draft

I guess I did not post it earlier….

How about this deal:

NY Gets: Fernandez, Bayless, Bargnani

Port Gets: Jeffries, Lee, Anthony Parker

Toronto Gets: Frye, Travis Outalw

I like it for Portland and NY. I am not sure how high Toronto is on Barg, but Outlaw is a very nice young player on the wings. Frye can also put up a similar 10 and 5 if given the same 25 minutes per game as Barg.

What does everyone think? Barg is soft, but Fernandez is a tough player. Bayless is still an unknown, but I know from reading this site that many fans wanted him around draft time.

I like that deal for us

.. But would Portland really move Outlaw? He looked crazy good in the few games I saw. Sounds like a lot for them to give up to get back Lee .. Anthony Parker is a forgetable player and Jeffries is a disaster.

I think Toronto — from what i read on hoopshype — would consider moving anyone at this point (except Bosh) which is a good thing. Them getting cap room this year make a lot of sense for them so then can get a piece to team up with Bosh before he gets to 10/11

If the Blazers want Lee, they have to give up some players. They give up a bunch, but Lee is the best player in the entire deal. Lee could be their missing piece.

They are getting Webster back soon as well. They also have two young players stashed overseas as well, in Joel Freeland (England), and Petteri Koponen (Finland).

As DanL wrote on his site, by rejecting the Nuggets offer, Walsh has begun to set a floor for trade talks for Lee.

Atkins and 2 first rounders could not get it done. Now, Outlaw, Fernandez, and Bayless (Frye is more incidental than a majo piece to this deal, in Portland’s eyes at least), would be the next level.

Also, while Parker is forgetable, he is a good 3 point shooter and a veteran presence. He would be a nice backup for them. Oh, and he is an expiring contract, which is never a bad thing.

Jeffries…. yeah he might be burdonsome for them. but who knows, Jeffries could be a good piece on a good team. He looks bad on the Knicks because he is asked to do more than he is capable of doing. In Portland, he would simply have to fill holes, defend, run in transition, keep balls alive, back up at both forward / center spots…… you know, all the things that good role players can do. Does it sound like Jeffries can handle that duty?

Comment by BiggieSmalls
2009-01-04 17:07:05

I like Outlaw.. From what I saw he was all over the court.. Driving and hitting outside shots and getting int he lanes defensively. Toronto should eat that deal up. It would be a super haul for NYK too..

While Lee may have the best statistics in the trade .. Portland would be using him as a 6th man. For this they give up their current 6th man and energy off the bench(Outlaw) , their hot young PG and their top draft pick last year(11th overall)..

we get back three young players with gobs of upside..

I like that the price is rising.. even if it is just rampant hot stove speculation.

On the surface, Camby, Frye and Bayless sounds great. But think about it. Camby walks next year, Frye kind of blows and is a free agent after this year (though he will come cheap if the Knicks re-sign him) and who knows what Bayless is yet. He doesn’t play. It would certainly help us this year and next. If the Knicks could somehow get a first rounder in addition, I’d hop aboard.

Chris it was me who suggested Spencer Hawes and I still think we can get him for the right price. As for all this talk of trading everyone for everyone, lets take this slow and make one trade before making a billion trades. If we want any chance of making the playoffs we need to build on chemistry we can’t fall into this Zeke trap where he would just go out and get the best player available and hope that the team meshes well.
Camby is very intriguing for the obvious reasons and I believe he is well worth getting, but only if we can get a young player to come along with him. Is Deandre Jordan really this player… I highly doubt it. So many teams passed on this guy and he hasn’t proven anything to tell us these teams were wrong. Do people think he can really become the next D’antoni Amare Stoudamire? I don’t believe it’s possible.
While Bayless is also intriguing I see him being no better then Jamal Crawford. I really like the idea of getting picks back and trying to develop this team into and younger entertaining team that can contribute in 2010. Look at what the Blazers and Bulls have done. Speaking of the Bulls, Chris I like your idea of Tyrus Thomas but I still feel the Bulls aren’t willing to give up on a talent like that. I truly believe a deal could be reached with the Kings to pull away Spencer Hawes considering they have Brad Miller and Mikki Moore, and along with Kenny Thomas 2 year deal and Quincy Douby as well as a conditional pick for Curry and Lee. I think that trade has a lot of upside, because Hawes seems like a perfect fit in the system.

I would love to get Bayless and Camby. I understand why people would want a pick or hold out for other trades because we are losing Lee for very little in return. This trade woyuld be a perfect fall back if it can actually be done and we can’t get anything better for Lee.

This is going to sound crazy but it worked on the Trade Machine. What if the Knicks did a four-way trade with Portland, Memphis and the Clippers.

NY would get: Jason Hart (LAC), Darko (Mem), Rudy Fernandez (Por), Jerryd Bayless (Por), Camby (LAC), and DeAndre Jordan (LAC)

Memphis would get: Eddy Curry (NY), Ricky Davis (LAC), Travis Outlaw (Por), and Brian Skinner (LAC)

Portland would get: Mike Conley (Mem), Anthony Roberson (NY), David Lee (NY), Jared Jeffries (NY), and Quinton Ross (Mem)

Clippers would get: Q-Rich (NY), Malik Rose (NY), and Channing Frye (Por)

Then maybe the Knicks could swing Darko and Tim Thomas to Charlotte for Diaw or something. What do you think?

Nice info Tommy Dee. Keep up the good work.

I think if the Knicks trade Lee they will have to get back a young player and a first round pick, or two good players that would fit nicely in Mike D’Antoni’s system. Lee is a fan favorite. It will not be that easy to let him go unless fans see someone that can contribute to the Knicks immediately and bring hope to the future of the Knicks.

One thing you can say is, if Lee is traded to the Blazers compared to a losing team, the Blazers will not have to worry about Lee resigning and going elsewhere.
