Atkins for Petro
By Chris Alvino - Jan 7, 2009 6:14 pm

According to HoopsHype.com, the Nuggets have traded guard Chucky Atkins to the Thunder for seldom used big man Johan Petro.

First off, I have to give credit to the guys at Hoopsworld and Hoopshype.  They do a great job.

This is interesting news, especially in the wake of what Tommy just reported.  I would have liked a shot at Petro, especially if we are giving up a valuable expiring deal for the productive, but less than spectacular Watson.  Maybe we can get a pick instead?  We here at TKB will keep our eyes on this situation.  Maybe the Atkins deal opens the door for an imminent Watson deal to NY.

Watson should come over for the Mobley trade exception and maybe Roberson to even out the salaries..

Anything more than that and it doesnt help the big picture

Good to see the wheels turning.. Any update on Roberson’s status? I dont think Donnie will cut him as it runs counter to his style/

Linas Klieza has such a sweet shot..He’s popping in the Heat Nugs game starting for Melo..

Looks like Alan Houston.. No wonder scouts love him so much.

The Mobley exception is not a bad idea… if we ever get it. But good call on that. Again, nothing has happened with that yet, and i am still unclear on how it will work exactly. But I like your thinking.

I wonder if we’re gonna end up regretting not taking the Lee for Atkins and 2 first rounders trade.

Just read on real gm that John Salmons is frustrated with the Kings coaching staff, and he is having a lot of trouble finding his game while Kevin Martin is on the court.
1) This kind of reminds me of the Crawford/ Steph situation or even Francis/ Steph/ Crawford situation.

2) I know you ,TD, loves Salmons game and have even called him one of the most underrated players in the NBA, so do you think maybe a deal would work, granted Salmons has 3 years on his contract but it’s only at 5 million a season, which is a bargain for his services, plus we would need to spend that money to retain Lee or Nate anyway. So I was thinking maybe Lee Curry and Jefferies and for Salmons and Brad Miller, it works out with contracts and we are taking away Jeffries 3 year contract and putting in Salmons less expensive 3 year contract thus still fitting the plan for 2010.

Plus if I might add, I think Miller would be a great addition to the team, he is a smart player who passes the ball real well which is a key in the system.

Isnt Brad Miler widely described as one of the most un athletic players in the league?

Interesting idea. I have been stating that Lee should be dealt for young players on rookie deals, but Salmons is a very good player that does not make a ton. Not a bad idea. And we ditch all that extra salary. Let’s wait and see with Curry. Who knows, he might have value on his own, even without Lee. He is still young and still talented….. and still very large.

I never said that he was so athletic, I said he was a good passer who was smart, plus I would almost bet my house on that he can beat Eddy Curry in a race.

42001 — I would Bet D’Antoni could beat them both in a race.

Salmons is a good fit tho.. props for that. — But not for Lee.

Biggie,
I don’t understand then what you could possibly want in return for Lee.
How doesen’t a pure shooting guard who is young cheap and athletic not fit your criteria for trading Lee. We don’t have a pure shooting guard on the team, Q rich isn’t and Nate isn’t. Salmons can score and play defense. I know Lee is a good player but the bottom line is if they don’t pay him he is walking. Salmons has 3 years left on a deal that only pays him 5 mil a year, that is one of the biggest bargains in the NBA right now. Plus the Kings have too many guys at the position, Kevin Martin and Donte Green and Jason Thomson can both play the wing, and they are looking for a player to complement Hawes which Lee is. I see this making perfect sense for both sides. At some point the Knicks are going to have to make a play on Lee either resigning him or trading him but to just have him walk at the end of the year is pointless. Salmons in my opinion is a solution that still lets us sign two big free agents and would be a nice fit with the team in 2010

I agree on the need to trade Lee. Trust me on that.. Ive been one of the chief proponents of trading him since the start of the season..

Brad Miller isnt a long term solution to anything but just a salary dump b4 10/11
At this point trading Curry before the deadline doesnt seem like a reality. He has too few games to wipe the stink off his reputation. Jeffries isnt a concern because his contract is very reasonable. Even if he never touches the ball on offense.

I just think there are better deals out there for Lee than Salmons and salary cap relief.. You are 100% right in your thinking though but I think the opportunity to get 2 young players or One and a good draft pick is out there.

My feeling is that the wisdom of trading Lee is dependent on what it would cost to keep him. He’s a good player, but his value around the league right now is probably inflated a little because he’s putting up good numbers. IMO he has had ideal circumstances to do so. So selling high is probably the right move, but it’s hard to know what he’s worth. The one thing I would be against is trading him for an older player that makes us better now, but worse in the long term. If we are going to move him, I want a player and/or picks that could be valuable 2-3 from now.

I’m a fan of Salmons also but I would not trade him for Lee either.
Lee is a player that averages a double double every night. There are not to many players in the league that put up a double double every night. We should be able to get 2 young players and a pick for Lee at the very least.
Salmons is a good player but I would trade for him using some of our other pieces. The Kings could use Jeffries, Thomas or even that 4.5 mill trade exception (if we ever get it). No way I send Lee for Salmons. The salaries don’t match anyway so we would have to include more in the deal.

We need to hope that Portland keeps interest in Lee because they have the young guns that we need to get. Bayless, S-Rod, Outlaw and Fernandez. Not saying we should get all of them but we should at least be able to squeeze out 2. No rush though….I like how Donnie is working it. He’s already done more good for this franchise than Isiah and Layden did put together. It’s so funny how people sit and bash isiah but he’s actually a great dude. He and Nate go to my barber shop and they are the most down to earth people in the world.

Things will fall into place for us, we just have to be patient with Donnie.
There is no quick fix for us. It’s going to take at least a year.
2010 we will be contenders for the Chip no matter what.

two youngs and a pick would be on the high end for Lee.

I would not do one young and salary cap relief.– Curry is the only real salary cap relief and I dont think selling at the absolute bottom of his value is prudent. This time next year I have no problem with Curry in the discussion

One high end young and a decent pick sounds reasonable value. Or a useful player with a reasonable contract and two first round pics. First round pics can be leveraged on draft night to get lower and better players. It is not necessarily signing up for a player in the mid 20 range of the draft.

I hear ya Biggie but what do you think we can get for Lee.
Portland has the resources to give us and they want Lee.
If Lee goes to Portland, they will certainly go deep into the playoffs.
That trade would make them a better team than anyone in the west with the exception of La La Land in my opinion.
I hate to say this but if Oden gets hurt, they’ll wish they traded for Lee.
They need a backup big that can come in and give them a double double every night. Who else in the league can do that for them that’s available right now? Lee is the only double double guy on the block right now.
It may come down to the trade deadline but I think the deal will get done sooner or later.
If we trade Curry before then, maybe we can hang on to Lee.
We’ll see!!!!
