Scouting Jeff Teague

by Tommy Dee on January 12th, 2009 at 11:36 am

We’ve had plenty of discussions about how Chris Duhon may need some help in the backcourt and as this roster develops you can bet that somewhere along the lines Donnie Walsh will add a point guard. I think it’s a virtual lock that Steve Nash comes here, regardless of all the Jason Kidd stuff, but hey if you can get Kidd for the MLE you think hard about it.

You also have to think hard about keeping Duhon past 2010.

So of all the needs Walsh has, does it make sense for him to go after a point guard in the draft this year? Does he take a Ricky Rubio if they finish high in the lottery, or go after a Brandon Jennings?

There’s a guy flying under everyone’s radar right now, and he may be just as talented as the two mentioned before. He’s Jeff Teague of Wake Forest and he is having a wonderful start to his sophomore campaign.

Teague is a hybrid guard in every sense of the word. He’s not a pure one but he can create. He can score and distribute, but he is an absolute dynamite shooter, at least that’s what he’s showing thus far. This year he’s shooting 50% from the field and a staggering 54% from behind the arc. Yesterday he had 34 in a huge win for the Deacons over North Carolina.

He’s a high turnover guy, which I don’t love, but he’s young and could be another thoroughbred in Mike D’Antoni’s system.

He’ll be in the conversation should the Knicks wind up in the lottery once again.

Read draftexpress’ scouting report on Teague.

I was watching that game last night thinking about Teague in a Knicks uni. I was also watching thinking that i don’t want to watch Ty Lawson get blown by in a Knicks uni on defense… Please stay away from him Donnie.

As a diehard Knicks fan that happens to be going to graduate school at Wake Forest, i completely agree with this assessment. I was at the Wake/UNC game last night and watched how Teague completely dominated the game. The guy was just on fire and carried Wake with great shooting (3-4 from three), some amazing finishes in traffic vs bigger players, great distribution to get the other players involved (especially on one play where he whipped the ball through three defenders and got a wide open look for Amini), and solid defense (limiting Ty Lawson to just 9 points, with 4 TOs and only having 1 foul in a game that saw three players foul out and 55 total fouls). He pushed the tempo against UNC and kept them on their heals the entire game. Then he calmy sank his free throws (13-15 for the game) at the end of the game and kept UNC at bay from making a comeback. Personally I hope he stays at Wake for at least another year, but Teague would be a wonderful addition to the D’Antoni system if the Knicks were lucky enough to draft him.

I’m flattered that J. Kidd wants to be a Knick but honestly, thanks but no thanks. I think the Knicks could do better with their mid-level if they use it at all, than a 37, 38 year old point guard who’s never had a j, but whose j, and D, are steadily declining. The Knicks could do better for 6 million.

I was also watching the UNC Wake Forest game last night, and the whole time I was thinking that this guy Teague is going to be huge. He has the speed to be in the NBA, he has the strength not only when he drives, but also when he passes, and perhaps most importantly, he has a great ability to get to just about all parts of the court. Perhaps it was just that one game, but he really put on a performance, and I think that he showed that if drafted higher, he will not be a disappointment. With that, I would love to see him come in with a knicks uni. I think that he could play the two with Duhon, while also come in off the bench to the play the one with Nate.
As far as Nash goes, as much as I love him, he’s getting old and it’s really showing this season (and it was showing at the end of last season even when he still had D’antoni at his side). I would be really worried that if he was to come in in 2010, that he would gain too much attention on the court in his dwindling career–his teammate Amaré though is a different story….

Hey Biggiesmalls….I’m sorry to say that we are not allowed to void Curry’s contract. I wish we could but the players union for the NBA is far different from other unions. If we were to try to void Curry’s contract we would face a hard battle with the union.
As far as Teague, I’m not really a college basketball fan but hey, if the kid looks good and Donnie and Dannie think he can be of use then why not.
Tommy Dee….Rubio isn’t coming out this year. He’ll be out next year and I don’t think we’ll get him because we won’t be a lottery team next year.
I can see us with around the same pick this year as we had last year.

It kills me how people are calling Gallo a bust. They obviously don’t know basketball. Gallo would be the most versatile player on our team in a loooooooooooong time.

The kid is 6 foot 11 and can shoot the 3, dribble, create and he has a toughness about him that you won’t find in a 19 year old. I think he may be 20 now as of 8/8/2008.

Watch this kid develop and enjoy him. He’ll be your favorite Knick within a year.

Ny’ers are so impatient it’s disgusting sometimes lol.

    @dvaldesp

Nash is not coming in 2010.
He’s coming next year and I would take him over Duhon anyday.
Duhon will be a graet backup for Nash.

Nash has a clause in his contract that allows PHX to release him at the end of this year so they won’t have to pay all his money next year (actually half).

He’s being a classy individual right now with PHX as they know he does not want to be there anymore.

They will part ways with him and move on.

Quick question…why would we get Nash and J Kidd?
I just don’t see that happening.

A quick read through the NBA Uniform Contract finds clause 7

    7.PHYSICAL CONDITION.
    (a) The Player agrees to report at the time and place fixed by the Team in good physical condition and to keep himself throughout each NBA Season in good physical condition.
    (b) If the Player, in the judgment of the Team’s physician, is not in good physical condition at the date of his first scheduled game for the Team, or if, at the beginning of or during any Season, he fails to remain in good physical condition … so as to render the Player, in the judgment of the Team’s physician, unfit to play skilled basketball, the Team shall have the right to suspend such Player until such time as, in the judgment of the Team’s physician, the Player is in sufficiently good physical condition to play skilled basketball.

Certainly coming into camp 60 lbs over weight does not qualify as “good physical condition” .. And this goes for you too Snacks.

We’re headed to the lotery, and i don’t mind.
sad but true.. long term might be better. for curry’s, lee’s whatever i want draft pick and unexpensive players.

  • DaJoka

    LMAO…
    What’s the scale though Biggie?

How can someone determine if anybody is in good physical condition?
All I could think of when I was reading that is Oliver Miller.
It’s hard for a team physician to determine what weight Curry should be at to make a contribution to the team.
If the Knicks could do something about Curry’s weight…trust me, I think they would’ve already.
Also…just because they suspend him…doesn’t mean we can void out his contract or dock him any money.
It doesn’t say we can suspend him without pay…feel me?

Curry is stuck in orange and blue until his contract expires or until he opts out…which I highly doubt he will because the only person in the world that would give him a good contract no longer is a GM LMAO.

That CBA reads like a bible man.
It takes alot to understand it.
It took me like 6 months to finally get it down and I still have some questions lol.

  • BiggieSmalls

It seems the NBA is more focused on having its players dress well for games than actually making good on their obligation to remain in physical shape.

The clause it there .. but Ive never heard of any team enforcing it./ If this team — with Snack sand Curry having such disdain for off season conditioning cant enforce something as simple as a Physical Conditioning Clause then no team can.

    IMPORTANT :

The Knicks could be unlucky and get then 10th, 11th or 12th pick. That’d be highly detrimental because we wouldn’t get the type of player we want nor would we have enough trade value to get a higher pick.

That’s why I’d urge the Knicks to trade Lee for Anthony Randolph (6 years younger with a huge upside) and GS’s lottery pick.

If Randolph turns out to be a dud (I highly doubt that) we’d still have another pick in the draft ! GS could sign Lee because he fits the kind of profile they’re looking for, and signing him to a mid-to-long term contract would make sense if you look at what Ellis’ and Biedrins got last summer.

The Knicks need to trade Lee for a younger player and another draft pick, that has always been my point. Then get a talented guard in the draft.
