Walsh to stay Patient, but doesn’t he have to make a move?

In his “state of the Knicks address, Donnie Walsh noted that he is in no real rush to make a move. Obviously, Walsh has shown great patience this year and it makes great sense to evaluate this group over an 82 game season.

But he really does have to make a move based on the fact that will soon have an open roster spot. Or does he?

“If I could get a good player, I’d like to do that,” Walsh said. “But I don’t want to interfere with two years from now. To a degree, it would have to be something that really helps us. Not just another guy. I’m not going to make a move just to make a move.”

Despite their record, the Knicks are, remarkably, just three games out of the eighth seed. But Walsh seems more concerned with evaluations to determine whom to get rid of this summer. Slumping Nate Robinson and David Lee are restricted free agents - and Walsh can match any team’s offer. Walsh will listen to offers for Lee at the deadline, but would want a lot of talent back and not one with a contract past 2010. Dumping injured-again Eddy Curry’s contract (he reportedly was recently offered to Miami for Shawn Marion and rejected) seems like a lost cause, considering he’s battling a weight problem.

Walsh, meanwhile, still has to answer for drafting Gallinari at No. 6. There’s a chance Gallinari’s bulging disc becomes a chronic problem.

“I’m not a doctor,” Walsh said. “Everything I’ve been told is that he’ll come through this. Whether he’s playing this year or needs surgery, I have to rely on what I’m being told. At this point no [surgery].”

Could Walsh really leave the roster spot, which will be vacated with the retirement of Mobley, open for the entire year?

Doubtful.

The schedule in the next few weeks is perfect for a push (albeit early), if he’s going to make a move to keep the knicks out of the lottery, I think now’s the time. Otherwise, I just don’t see the playoffs happening for this team. I’m assuming once the deadline passes we might start hearing about some 10-days at least, right?

If he leaves a roster spot open all year, I will be disgusted.

The other night proved that to an extent, you never know who might work out until you try. Remember, the Knicks cut von Wafer off their summer league roster this past off-season. He is now starting for the Rockets. Without question,.he would be a starter and a big help to this team.

Like Tommy said, it is doubtful that Walsh would leave a spot open all year.

Walsh said what all GMs say in public. If the right deal is out there, he will make it. No kidding.

I cant believe he would not fill the Mobley Spot.. at least with a series of 10 day contracts

I could pine on about D’Antoni’s use of his bench players but after seeing what Roberson did with his extended minutes I can understand Coach D’s reluctance.

There has to be a deal before the trade deadline. Walsh would not let an asset like Malik’s contract expire worthless. And I still think there is hope for a Marbury trade. Why Marbury for Jermaine wasnt brought up in the daily dime conversation is puzzling.

I hope Walsh doesn’t make a move to fill the roster spot. Let the players we have now keep playing. Are you kidding me? Bringing in another player, he would have to learn the system which obviously is not easy because Harrington has yet to pick it up. Let the same guys keep playing. Unless he makes a deal for someone that knows this offense already (Raja), then I don’t see him bringing in anybody.
If he can trade Curry…great.
If he can trade Steph…great.
Donnie has done enough already for this year.
He moved the impossible to move contracts of Zach and Jamal.
He came here to clear out cap space and that’s it.
He said he wants the team to stay competitive but we all know that’s a distant second in his mind.
As long as we have cap space for the big summer, we’re fine.
The team will not make the playoffs this year.
Next year is different. We will make the playoffs.
Great job this year Walsh.
So far you get an A+ from me.

Question — What options does DW have to void Eddy’s Contract for not being in shape.

If he came into camp a full 60 lbs overweight — as has been reported here — at 340 lbs is not that grounds for breach of contract? It is not the first time this has occurred.

I read somewhere that the Dodgers were considering voiding Andruw Jones’s contract. Apparently there is a clause in MLB contracts that allows them to take action if players “shall at any time fail, refuse or neglect to keep himself in first-class physical condition or to obey the club’s training rules.”

Surely such a clause exists in NBA contracts — which require a higher level of physical conditioning that most other sports.
