Can’t Call A Tech there…

by Tommy Dee on February 12th, 2009 at 10:00 am

I miss the days when a star player could do and say whatever they wanted down the stretch to officials while the men in stripes just turned their backs and ignored it.

Reggie Miller used to fling profanities if he didn’t get a call late in games. Shaquille O’Neal looked as if he wanted to fling a ref across the arena, and would say so, Kobe Bryant would whine and act like a child, and all MJ had to do was give a death stare.

Granted, we could use a star player, but what pisses me off is that last night an official help decide the outcome of the game and that drives me freekin nuts.

Al Harrington was wrong for complaining and for slapping the backboard and he probably gave the ref lip all night long. But you just can’t call a technical foul there.

Any time else, fine, just not at the end of the game. It’s too big of a call for not that big of a deal.

Did Al show him up? Maybe. Was it worth a call that stopped the clock, gave the Clippers a free throw AND the ball back with less than half a minute to go? No.

It changes the entire complexion of a game in its most critical moment. I don’t care if Harrington was wrong, the ref has to let that one go. I guess Mike D’Antoni doesn’t agree.

But, I’ve seen worse.

************************************

I’m sick an tired of hearing that the Knicks should have taken this guy or that guy at 6. Eric Gordon scored 30 points, he’s a nice player and Donnie Walsh liked him. As did I, I think he’s better than Mayo.

But he’s not on our team so get over it. Walsh had no idea what would happen with the Marbury situation or if he could trade Crawford on the night of the draft. They would have had Crawford, Marbury, Nate, Duhon (whom they would have signed anyway), Gordon and Mardy Collins.

Knocking the pick today is just plain stupid. Get over it.

*************************************

If Zach Randolph is that great of a player why can’t his teams win? Seriously, the Clippers can say the Knicks traded Randolph and got worse, so what, exactly, does that say about the Clippers decision?

They have Baron Davis, Gordon and Camby man, do you think they can finish in the top 11 of the West?

Sorry Tommy you are flat-out wrong about Al’s tech, first he tried to do a chin up on the rim and then he slapped the backboard. It was clear as day he was going to get a well deserved tech. Al is far from a superstar, at best he is the 4th or 5th option on a great team

I agree somewhat about Gallo & Gordon, what’s done is done. The rest of the year should be about helping Gallo develop as much of his game as possible, so next season the learning curve won’t be as great. One thing though, considering that Jamal who did have some value and was traded only 11 games into the year, it was obvious that this was something they were looking to do from the get go and maybe that along with Chandler being a natural SF should have been enough to pick Gordon

Zack is good, but his contract was too large to keep around. I have no problem with the trade, except perhaps maybe Walsh should have tried to pry DeAndre Jordan from the Clips

I’m with you on this one Tommy — I was furious at the timing of the call. With that said, after sleeping on it, if I were the ref under the basket and the guy slapped the backboard hard, then I could see the ref acting on instinct and calling the T. But it was a very emotional time of the game and sometimes you have to let that go.

I was fine with us not picking Gordon — there were a lot of questions about him coming into the draft.

  • Knicks4life

And Tommy Dee the Knicks had Balkman, Chandler, Q-Rich, Lee, Rose, Randolph, and Jeffries at the SF and PF slots and were looking to add LBJ and/or Bosh in 2010. Knicks had every reason to pursue Gordon or Mayo. SF and PF were more of a strength (if this team has strengths) than PG/SG. So I respectfully disagree with you there and will continue to cry over spilled milk.

Nice blog though, Myles analysis of draft prospects is a great idea, and even though I don’t always agree with him, Alvino’s a boss too.

Harrington needs to grow up . . .Nate is better than Duhon.

  • craigamus83

The draft pick situation isn’t something to just “get over.” Donnie made a bad call on this one. He knew who the big contracts were and which ones he had to move, Crawford being one of them. Marbury, playing or not, only had one year left any way. He knew that guards were the Knicks biggest need. Hence, the signing of Duhon.

He loved Gallo b/c he can shoot. He also signed Roberson for the same reason. I just don’t understand how the guys at the top of his list were Mayo and Westbrook, but he goes with a big shooter. I’m not saying Gallo will be a bum. But lets face it, he can’t jump, has concrete blocks for feet, can’t box out and rebound, can’t defend. So while he is a 6’10″ guy that can shoot and has handle, he plays more like a small guard.

Eric Gordon on the other hand is small in size, but plays bigger. He’s athletic, strong, quick, can defend, block shots, and most of all he’s aggressive.

Call it what you want but I’m sick and tired of the Knicks f**kin’ up on draft picks.

  • the oak

I think the Gallo pick was still the right one. Remember in two years we will have a superstar and maybe two. We are not going to need a guy who can score like gordon. Gallo might not be better now but even not knowing who we will have in 2010, I think Gallo will be the better fit.

If we had the roster we have now on draft night do you think Walsh would have drafted gordon?

  • http://www.bandwagonknick.com BK

Let’s not get carried away here…Eric Gordon is a nice player, but he is *not* a good defender and at best an average rebounder for his position. I’m not sure how he plays “bigger”, unless we’re talking about nice alley oops once in a while — players like Nate and Westbrook play “bigger” than their position, and the stats show it.

I still think Gallo can be a major player, but the lost time due to injury still seems to be affecting him. We may not see him really blossom until next season.

Tommy, hope all is well in the Dee household but must take issue with a few observations. The rules require that the ref “tee up” Al, you saw the exact same call in the K’s favor the night before.Despite 11 years in the league and being on a team in which he could be a leader, Al’s immaturity alone dictates that he must go before next years training camp.Re the Reggie comments, it “pisses me off” that certain stars get the overwhelming benefit of the doubt on foul calls, as we’ve observed first hand with Kobe and LBJ and which will really “piss off” Knick fans when Wade comes to town, as the minute he starts to the basket the 3 refs simultaneously start to “pucker up and blow”! Stern’s concept of “featuring” star players during the Magic/Bird was a brilliant marketing strategy,as the league was headed to the Versus channel. It’s come far from that now and while we should all be grateful for the star power the preferrential teatment is excessive.Re Gordon, this kid was a “chucker”at Indiana, when’s the last time you heard that word, in college who focused on his own stats. He’s blending in now because he’s a rookie, my thinking is as his star continues to rise his “chucking, me first” attitude will continue. Passing on him was smart.Rumors indicate DW giving Anthony Randolph a close look, he would be an outstanding addition to this team.Lastly, a question?? is it just me or does D’Antoni’s “stubborness” rear it’s ugly head too often?? I’m constanly amazed that he goes with combinations that don’t work, the starting line-up in the Portland game, and his keeping Roberson and Malik glued to the bench, despite all the injuries?? Stay well

The game wasn’t lost by the technical (though it sure didn’t help).

Harrington going 1-11 from 3 hurt. He was off all night, and never stopped bombing it.

Robinson was unreal. He was all over the court and had a game (according to ESPN) that hasn’t been matched since a Magic Johnson game from 1981.

Most of all what I took away from the game (I was there) is that David Lee plays too soft inside. There were at least two if not three plays where he gave such a soft foul on a layup that it became a 3-point play. They really need to bring in Oakley to teach him how to give a foul and not give upt he layup in the process.

  • George From Scottsdale

Tom, don’t mean to dominate the air waves, but we need to start a conversation about “what to do with N8″!!!

  • da0213

I blame Harrington for the loss. That game was over without that T.

After going at it with the fans in Oakland, why doesn’t somebody put dude back in line? He blew the game for us, and ruined what I think was a great game from Robinson.

And for the record, Al Harrington is no Reggie Miller.

  • greatman42001

This game really scared me last night in that it reminded me way to much of last year. And no it’s not just because Z-Bo and Mardy Collins were in the arena.
First off Al Harrington’s idiotic tech reminded me of the crap Nate used to pull last year, getting a stupid tech in situations where they were not needed and hurt the team.

    2. Al Harrington chucking up 25 shots not of which were good looks, that reminded me way too much of Jamal Crawford last year.

    3. Tim Thomas sitting out the game after five minutes of playing time when he knows that the team will only be left with 8 players, that reminded me of the lack of heart they had last year.

    4. and lastly Mike D’antoni really looked like last night and this entire road trip that he had no control over the team which reminded me to much of Isiah and his lack of control.

The Knicks need to regroup and take the all-star break to clear their heads and forget about the last five games, the all-star break couldn’t have come at a better time for this team, hopefully they will come back from the break energized and ready to make a push for one of the last spots in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Tommy – While, yes, there is little point in complaining about something that is done, I refuse to just give Donnie a free pass on the draft. There is no way that he did not know he was dealing Crawford. None. If he was waiting to see how they played together, our start to the season would not have convinced him to trade because we were playing very well. It was dumb to draft a SF/PF. We needed a C or a guard. I was not huge on either Eric Gordon or Brook Lopez but both would have been much better for this team now. I don’t think knocking the pick is stupid, I think it’s just a critique of a giant mistake that our GM made. To ignore it and blindly praise it and all of Walshs moves would be stupid. I am not saying fire the guy, I’m just saying that Donnie has made some mistakes that have greatly effected our chances of competing when he STATED that all of his intentions were to have us compete NOW. If he wants to rebuild, then FINE, but then lets throw the season and get a great pick. Lets not sit in basketball purgatory and miss the playoffs and the lottery. That just reminds me of Isaiah.

The fact that Zach isn’t helping the Clips win doesnt make it any better either. He got injured, one. The Clips are a perennial mess, the entire team has been struggling with injuries throughout the season. It was dumb of them to trade for Zach when they had Kaman and Camby, but it was dumber of us not to get one of them back or at least a draft pick.

  • godsavetheknicks

If the Knicks had this call go against them earlier in the game and it wasn’t called on the Clips in a crucial situation we’d be livid. 1 point in the 2nd quarter doesn’t count any less towards the final score in the 4th.

The zebras should always try to just enforce the rules. I don’t belive in the refs “swallowing their whistles” in crunchtime unless they’ve been letting incidental contact go all game and are being consistent.

A referee can decide the game with a non call just as much as they can with a call.

As far as Gallo is concerned we haven’t seen the kid play anything close to what the other rooks have so let’s reserve judgement.

This was as surprisingly deep draft so hopefully we don’t look back in 2-3 seasons and regret passing up Gordon, Augustin, Brook Lopez!, Bayless and company.

Drafting is largely a crapshoot but missing with the 6th pick in a rel. deep draft would hurt.

2006 top 10 picks who may be useless: Adam Morrison (3) Shelden Williams (5..what happened??) Patrick O Bryant (9) Saer Sene (10)

    Paul Millsap went 47th…

  • jcmoney

Also, not to complain, but I didn’t even know there was a game yesterday until I read the comments. I had no idea what this post was referring to since there was nothing on TKB pre or post game. It’s ok though, I wouldn’t want to write about the Knicks either.

  • albert

Harrington is a chucker and will never contribute to a winning team. (Same as Crawford.)

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

Sorry for the lack of recap…that was actually the first time and won’t happen again. I’m traveling on business and life sometimes gets in the way.

Anyway, if you’re a fan of this blog, you understand that we try to stress the importance of not being short sided this year.

Donnie walsh gave you a chance at a free agent or 2 in 2010. If that means we don’t win this year so be it. And by win I mean make the playoffs. Did we really think we were a playoff team this year?

    I didn’t.

    Donnie’s cleaning out the trash.

If you say galli was bad pick, i’m not hearing it. The kid is 20 years old and is still a baby. Lopez? Please. He’s a good player but not one that is amounting to any wins. He wouldn’t fit D’Antoni’s system either. 9 other teams passed on him.

Bottom line with Walsh is that he’s made some questionable moves but he’s made this roster more flexible. He’s a good drafter so we’ll be okay.

    Don’t be short sided.

as far as the tech, if the refs don’t call it Dunleavy doesn’t lose his shit and cry bloody mercy. You know why? because his team was losing by 3 polnts based on what had happened all game. That call makes them NOT think about 3 but a 2 to tie, which impacts the whole game.

One call should never do that, which is why certain refs refrain at the end of games. I was clear in saying Al is no superstar and yes he was wrong, but come on swallow the whistle. the whole game shouldn’t be impacted by that..

Now could the clips have buried a 3? sure. Should the knicks have made a stop? that would have been nice. But in the end it’s a play where the ref should use some common sense.

Again, do the clippers scream “WHY NO TECH!!” if it wasn’t called?

No, because it wasn’t that big of a deal.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

    Short sighted 101…

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

main man George…D’antoni is stubborn but I can guarantee there are players on this team that he can’t wait to get rid of.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

you think the clips would give up a pick for that contract?? Come on.

You’re underestimating Donnie too much here, he was at the table for a long time with the clips and got the best offer he could.

  • bob knick slave

i agreewith everything, except Z-BO.its not his fault that the clippers stink.hes been on bad teams his whole life.(thats a CHRIS RUSSO-ism.if hes so good why do his teams stink?)you could put MJ on this clips team and they would still stink, however,if the knicks kept zach and collins, the knicks would be much better than they are!

  • Knicks_Fan_SP

Sitting gallo on the 2nd back to back game I believed hurt him the kid had so much intensity it seems that its gone now……all star break couldn’t come any sooner….hopefully mike addresses the teams D, Al Harrington, closing out games, etc.

  • George From Scottsdale

Albert, be careful about throwing around “chucker”,we’ll bring back street venacular from the 50′s and 60′s and cut out two whole generations of “bloggers”.You’re actually being too kind to Al H,not only is he a chucker, but his shot selection to be kind, sucks,he never initiates action to draw a double and pass and he appears to have invented the “dribble off the foot, knee or ankle”.Coming ou to HS and early in his NBA career he was a solid defender, but that skill appears dormant.I’ts easy to see why Nelson want’d no part of him and rather sad that both him and Thomas haven’t made a better impact on the game, talent undeveloped.

  • George From Scottsdale

Tom, sorry to sound so negative but I disagree, again. I actually think DW made a decision to be highly supportive of MD, and that Gallo, was in fact, his idea.MD looked over the roster and knows his offense is built around 3-point shooting, something this kid appears to do well. While it takes two to tango,at the time of the draft, I was proposing trading down and picking Robin Lopez and securing an additional pick, hopefully in’09. Going back to my earlier comments, here might be another example of MD’s stubborness, by not focusing on an inside presence, which this team needs deperately. As I said earlier, rumors appear to be swirling around Anthony Randolph, who would be a nice addition, even this late in the season. I do actually think both DW and MD,thought earlier and may still now think, they can make the playoffs.DW knows the value to the K’s organization and the fan base and I actually think his hesitancy to make moves now might be focused on not disrupting the chemistry, which actually appears to be very good!!

  • George From Scottsdale

Tom, I definitely agree, some are obvious and easy, but what to do with N8???

  • Chris Alvino

Just to echo Tommy’s point above, I was busy studying for a big exam today. I did not have time to catch the game and post a recap.

JCmoney- The last few games, it has been tough to write about the team.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

in hindsight maybe, but Gallo is going to be very good.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

I think he trades nate, it’s not going to be easy but I think his value is really high to a playoff team right now…

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

In fairness Anthony Randolph is never going to develop into a post player at all IMO.

and again, how can you turn down a 20 year old kid with a pure stroke and high IQ?

No one knows what any player is going to be yet. It makes no sense to complain about picks now other than to say you hope it works out.

But I hear what you’re saying with Walsh and DT, but I know Walsh is equally high on Gallo.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

I know you don’t mean MJ.

Come on. Zach does more to lose a game than he does to win a game. Great players can win games even when their team is shorthanded. That;s what makes them great.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

    Not you BK
