The deadline is coming!

by Tommy Dee on February 12th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

We’ve done our forecasting and there’s a good reason to be excited if you are a fan of NBA trade deadline day.

It’s like MLB hot stove, the microwave version, and by “microwave version” I mean like the ones that toast the bread at Subway, real intense-like.

Get ready to “Eat Fresh” fellas.

As we look around the league there are teams ready to mingle, some that are drunk and want to go to bed with someone, and some that are standing in a corner like a kid at a 7th grade dance.

Here’s our overview starting with your Knicks.

KNICKS

Donnie Walsh’s team has been on a roller coaster all year. A bunch of wins followed by a ton of losses.

Key Pieces: David Lee, Nate Robinson, Malik Rose, Jared Jefferies, Steph
Skinny: I’m sure you think I’m crazy for adding Jefferies to this list, but defensively he can help a playoff team, but will his contract scare people off? In the end, Lee and JJ2 stay, Nate and Malik go. We’re really trying to dig to find leaks, but MSG is on lock. “Spot on” Hahn apparently landed a great get with the Amar’e stuff.  We’ve said dealing Nate is hard, but there’s no way he’s a Knick next year. He wants to get PAID and the Knicks won’t match so that’s not a good sign. I thought it made sense to keep him around for a playoff push, which can still happen, so if Walsh agrees then he stays. I think out of respect Walsh trades Malik to a contender. In this economy that contract is valuable. Honestly, who knows with Steph.

Philly

Key Pieces: Andre Miller. Sam Dalembert
Skinny: Again, the Blazers are hot for Miller and are trying to make the numbers work. The Sixers would love Lafrentz’s contract to help soften their cap. You should be hearing more of that in the days to come. Dalembert could be a nice piece to a playoff team in need of defense and Sports Illustrated seems to be barking up the right tree with a Sheed for Sammy deal. Makes plenty of sense for both teams.  In the end Dalembert stays, Miller gets dealt to P-Land.

NETS

Key Pieces: Vince Carter
Skinny: Carter still has a ton of game and the Nets may be looking to make a run at David Lee should the Knicks not lock up the power forward before the summer. But are the Nets buyers or sellers?  The rumors are rampant that Carter goes to Cleveland for Wally World and some pieces. Can the Nets get more? Doubtful. Does Lebron get his third piece? Does he want it? We’ve seen that sizzling 2/3 duos aren’t always the best route.

MIAMI

Key Pieces: Shawn Marion, Michael Beasley
Skinny: Beasley has world-class talent but he’s a nightmare off the court. The staff at the Doral Arrowood told me so after the rookie camp. It’s shocking that his name stayed out of the fray. Has Riley given up already? Is Wade done with the kid? Will that affect his decision in 2010? And what about Marion? He’s not in their plans so they have to get something in return.  This is a classic Riley scare tactic with Beasley so I think they hold on to him for now. Marion is on the move and it seems Toronto for Jermaine O’Neal seems the most logical.

RAPTORS

Key Pieces:  Chris Bosh, Andrea Bargnani, Jermaine O’Neal
Skinny: Like the Sixers, the Raptors will make a move and it seems O’Neal is the first. But his contract is really tough to maneuver. They desperately need to reshuffle. O’Neal to Miami seems the most logical, but Bosh and Bargnani both stay as asking prices are too high.

WOLVES

Key Pieces: Mike Miller, Jason Collins, Brian Cardinal, Juwan Howard
Skinny: Sadly for Kevin McHale, the much-maligned Wolves coach and GM, he had the team playing hard for a while there before losing rising star Al Jefferson for the year. Now he has to decide whether to trade Miller and some expirings, or get a high pick and try to build off the team’s relative success of this year.  Miller and an expiring for Wally World make sense, but I have a funny feeling he ends up with a team not named the Nets or Cavs.

KINGS

Key Pieces: Brad Miller, John Salmons, Shelden Williams
Skinny: The Kings are not relevant in the NBA, which has to drive the media savvy Maloof brothers up the wall.  They won’t stand pat, they’ll make news for the sake of doing their hair.  If it were up to them Miller definitely moves, and Salmons, no longer one of the best kept secrets in the NBA, has a new address as well. But are they really valuable to any team?

BLAZERS

Key Pieces: Raef Lafrentz (expiring), Travis Outlaw, Sergio Rodriguez, Jerryd Bayless
Skinny: I’ve been hearing stuff about Nate  (who had a monster showcase game the other night) to Portland, and a BS rumor was posted a while back regarding Rodriguez straight up. Here’s what I know. Seattle fans who love hoops have latched on to the Blazers and Nate is Seattle’s baby. His family is out there, as his mother was all over the MSG telecast. Nate would like to come home but it doesn’t appear as if the Blazers can meet his lofty contract demands. Nate is apparently preparing to ask for the moon.  So we’ll see. Anyway,  I think Outlaw gets moved if the deal is right. Sources have told me that he’s just too good to move and that teams haven’t caught on just how good he is. Knick fans saw it the other night.  They want a point guard to keep Brandon Roy at the 2, and they are NOT ready to trust  Bayless with the keys. They will be active, no question, and if they can get their point guard and another big body up front, maybe in exchange for Travis, they’ll be primed to make a move deep into the playoffs.

SUNS

Key Pieces: The entire team (Including Nash)
Skinny: Is Steve Kerr’s arrogance comparable to that of Isiah Thomas? Absolutely. This team is not that bad really, but they are completely lost on both ends. We know they will be making deals o’ plenty.

Stay tuned for reports after the All-Star break as this next week will prove to be one of the most active in NBA trade deadline history.

I would like to see the knicks get involved a three team trade w/ GS, PHX……try n get Barbosa, A. Randolph, Belleneli….I posted a possible trade scenario in the Anthony Randolph post but I don’t see the Knicks giving up that much

  • Mucha

I’m more anxious than anything because this trade deadline may be crucial to the Knicks’ future. Donnie Walsh has to make a deal for a talented young player because what we have (see Gallinari & Chandler) is really not enough. Michael Beasley and Anthony Randolph should be the main targets in my opinion, and their contracts would be a perfect match for 2010-2011.

Beasley just had a great game tonight though, but I believe that Riley would rather have Stoudemire who’d make the Heat a contender and convince Dwyane Wade to resign. I don’t know if that’s nothing more than a rumor but the Grizzlies may be involved in a three-way deal that would send Gay, Conley and Warrick to Phoenix. Wouldn’t Lee, Robinson and Malik Rose be a better package?

You know that I’d love to see Randolph in blue and orange. If Crawford decides to opt out – and he’s reportedly willing to do it – the Warriors would have enough space to resign Lee this summer and add him to a talented core of Jackson, Ellis, Wright and Biedrins. So those are my scenarios, nothing new though.

    1. THE KNICKS GET ANTHONY RANDOLPH AND GOLDEN STATE’S FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK (OR A PROTECTED FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK) FOR DAVID LEE.

    2. THE KNICKS GET ANTHONY RANDOLPH FOR NATE ROBINSON AND A PROTECTED FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK.

    3. THE KNICKS GET MICHAEL BEASLEY AND MARK BLOUNT, THE HEAT GET AMARE STOUDEMIRE AND THE SUNS GET DAVID LEE, NATE ROBINSON AND MALIK ROSE.

Not sure about trading N8 ’til after the season. Let’s take a look @ the roster since training camp:
    Knicks – Steph – Crawford – Mobley – Roberson + an injured Q + an injured Duhon = trading N8. Unless we’re tanking, I don’t understand the logic.

Side note from “Can’t Call A Tech there…”That wasn’t short sighted 101, that was real talk 101. Gallo will have success in this league b/c of his size and jump shot but his defensive and athletic deficiencies are far too much to overcome. And since when does high IQ not include knowing the fundamentals of defense? I hate when people think a nice jumper & stiff legs equate high IQ and flashy, athletic players are merely freaks of nature ( Not singling you out Tommy, just a generalization on most sports writers).

Gallo has a nice offensive repertoire for his size, but he probably will not be able to utilize it in the NBA like he did in Italy. His lack of athleticism won’t allow him to do so. This isn’t Larry Legend back in the 80s. The players are bigger and faster now.

The Grizzlies and suns deal fell through……..I believe Heisley said the suns were asking to much and I dont blame him Gay, Conley, Warrick are a much better package than Lee, Robinson, Rose…..gay is a star, Conley has improved his game, Warrick has been a great player to have on ur team he brings a good game off the bench

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

That’s a poor generalization about Galli. No one was talking about his d when he had a 5 game stretch of about +50.

all rookies need to improve, the short sided-ness is based on someone saying it was a bad pick 20 games into his career.

No one has any idea what any rookie is going to be. it’s a sense and I, as well as the knicks front office, think he’s a major piece moving forward.

It makes no sense to say “we could have had him” at this point.

It’s time for fans to get over it.

  • Mucha

Perhaps, but if the Suns were asking for too much, the fact that Lee/Robinson/Rose is a slightly less attractive offer in your opinion gives credibility to my suggestion. And I’d even add a protected pick if necessary.

  • Knicks_Fan_SP

tommy do u think sitting gallo on the 2nd game of the first back-to back hurt him (the philly game not his debut) since he sat that game out he seems he has not been the same

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

I think there may be something to that, or maybe he’s just getting his conditioning down. Teams are starting to scout him, and maybe he lost some of that swagger. that may be a little fatigue.

he’s got to step his game up tho, as you can see fans in this town aren’t very patient with him for some reason because “the grass is always greener.”

  • George From Scottsdale

Tommy, “short sided-ness”, is that a Freudian shot across N8′s bow?!?, just joking!!! I would absolutely put together some package to get Anthony Randolph, he fits MD’s system perfectly, reasonably solid off the ball defender and athletic enough on the O,particularly if they can tone his enthusiasm down a bit, plus he’s another 20 year-old.Absent a decent post defender, DW shouldn’t make any other moves. I played against Murphy in college, bastard padded his stats every game, and as blasphemous as this might sound, N8 is starting to remind me of Calvin, unstoppable on offense and much stronger than he appears, especially if he catches the edge. I would absolutely let the market set his salary level, sign him and if the number is too high, trade him next season. I’d actually like to see Duhon sit a few more games and get a better feel of N8 running the show, knowing he’s got no backup.

  • George From Scottsdale

Tommy, also meant to agree with your Kerr comment and would throw in Ainge, who was “handed” the gift from McHale.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

My boy Chris Watson finished second to Calvin in all time scoring at Niagara. He’s since been passed and is 3rd or 4th.

    where did you play?

Nate at the 1 is a scary thought, but he did work last night.

    Let’s see.

  • BiggieSmalls

That Vince Carter to Cleveland rumor is a nightmare scenario for us.

It likely opens them up to blow us out of the water for Lee. Which would be unfortunate and embarrassing.

Its clear Nate will get at least the mid level in an offer sheet.. A sign and trade puts us at a disadvantage as we are limited in what we can extract. It looks like he is a goner.

Malik has to go by the deadline. Im sure Jimmy D can find the coin to take some salary on for next year.

Marbury likely stews until March 1 then heads off to Greece of Italy

Snacks could be interesting. He will obviously be bought out of his option this off season but is there an injury/insurance advantage to including him in a deal before then? Or this summer?

    this should get interesting.

  • Mucha

    3. THE KNICKS GET MICHAEL BEASLEY AND MARK BLOUNT, THE HEAT GET AMARE STOUDEMIRE AND THE SUNS GET DAVID LEE, NATE ROBINSON AND MALIK ROSE (AND A PROTECTED FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK?).

Three phone calls, at least one of these scenarios could potentially be a reality. I really like David Lee and Nate Robinson but Donnie Walsh will have to deal them and get a great talent. I really believe in these scenarios, and getting Beasley or Randolph would be great for the future of this franchise.

  • Daniel

why is everyone talking about amare…..or other top players that may come to new york by the end of the deadline? as long as kerr is running the show in arizona…..amare stays there….or heads somewhere else! not even for lee! trust me…

so isn’t beasley! he was the nr. 2 pick for gods sake! miami wasn’t tanking and losing like they did just to send a young talent like him away….

why no one has thought about the possibility of trading for larry hughes?!
he wants out….and paxon wants him out too!! we need a shooting guard and a backup pointguard! paxon wants expiring deals for hughes! we have em’ > Malik and Marbury! marbury for hughes and noah or malik rose and nate for hughes and lindsey hunter….

what do you think about it???

  • BiggieSmalls

    Daniel —

Neither of those scenarios work under the cap.. As for Hughes.. the man has worn out his welcome in two (or three?) spots.. When does it start being the players fault and not the circumstance?

Also, the Post reports that Paxson will resign or be canned after the deadline.. So odds of him pulling off a deal before then are slim. But they are in talks about Amare, JO and others..

Boy did Paxson screw up in Chicago.. He dumped Chandler (bad move) and Curry (good move) but the players he drafted with the Curry picks are just not hitting it off..Took on Larry Hughes and the other screw ups./.

    Sephalosa looks good though

  • pedro

I hope Walsh makes every player available except for Chandler and Gallo.

  • Chris Alvino

Daniel- Hughes has worn out his welcome in both Cleveland and Chicago. The only way I take him is if Curry or Jeffries is going the other way.

  • Chris Alvino

But I understand your logic and I would like to have him as well.

  • George From Scottsdale

    I’m a Manhattan Jasper!!!

Lee/Robinson/Rose isn’t a slightly less attractive offer, its a landslide. As the other poster mentioned, Gay is a star, Conley is looking like he is going to be an all star point guard some day, and Warrick has been solid in and out of the starting lineup all season.

Nate and Lee both may not resign after this season, and neither or as good as Gay or have the upside of Conley.

  • belikmike23

    via ESPN.com:
The Toronto Raptors have agreed to send Jermaine O’Neal and Jamario Moon to the Miami Heat in exchange for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks, league sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Ric Bucher.

The deal is pending league approval, according to league sources.

  • jcmoney

Tommy, is there any proof out there that Beasley is close to being available? I just can’t see the Heat giving up on him this early, even for Amare. Bosh, I think they pull the trigger. But anything else Beasley stays. I havent seen anything out Miami saying Beasley is available and I can’t believe his name comes up in anything other than media or fan rumors.

Everything else seems spot on. I have been really high on Outlaw and would have pulled the trigger on Lee for Outlaw in a heartbeat if it didn’t leave us embarassingly undermanned. Outlaw looks like a real player on both ends of the court, great length and athleticism, and his shot improves every year. I think he’s something like 5 for 6 on game winning shots which is ridiculous, the Knicks NEED someone like that. The problem is that it would just leave us with a team of these tweener fowards who dont have a real position. I would love to do a Chandler and Lee for Aldridge and Outlaw, but I don’t think the Blazers would even nibble.

  • saintbarnabastard

Lee & N8 are better off gone if the Knicks can take advantage of their inflated value. They’re both good but have fatal flaws in their game that will prevent them from being starters on a true contender. At best, they’re nice little max effort guys off the bench on a contender. Nate and Lee are gimmicky guys that seem really good on garbage teams. They’d both have a hard time getting serious time on a contender that’s still alive late in May and early June.

I could see Nate maybe being like a Mason or a Starks if the Knicks were that good, but Mason and Starks were more valuable when they were cheap. Their reduced price tags at the time forgave their fatal flaws. Nate is asking for the kind of money that doesn’t forgive his flaws. As for Lee, I love the guy, but his D is atrocious. If you’re gonna be a max effort guy with a limited offensive game, outstanding D is mandatory. Without that kind of D or offensive game, you’re better off trading him to some foolish GM that doesn’t understand how inflated his value is by being on a bad team and by being in an offensive system like the one our coach has.

Neither is worth the money they seek. Since they want the kind of money their games don’t warrant, you gotta send both out of town while you can get value back for them. Maybe they’d both be good bench pieces if/when Lebron comes here, but their inflated monetary demands aren’t in line with their intrinsic second stringer value.

  • jcmoney

In a move that will no doubt effect this post, the Heat just traded Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to the Raps for Jermaine O’Neil and Jamario Moon.

Cross them out of the Amare sweepstakes. Beasley isn’t going anywhere.

For Toronto, it now makes less sense to deal Bosh quickly. The Jermaine/Marion deal made the most sense out of any rumored trade. Toronto needed a swingman, Miami needed a big man.

  • Daniel

    biggiesmalls thanks for your thoughts….

i know the deals would not work under the cap rule in the “trade” i pulled off..
but the idea of getting a shooting guard for expiring deals… got me thinking!

i think larry hughes could help the knicks! i mean he doesn’t shoot the lights of but he can shot the ball! and on the defensive end he could bring some much needed push!!

well….i’m not a larry hughes fan either….and his last good season was his last in washington…….but…….his salary comes of the books in 2010…and thats the main reason i’d pull the trigger!

he is healthy too………..but J.O. ? maybe 2003/04 since then…..injury prone…but if walsh can get J.O. for marbury…..go for it!! perhaps he has a hand full of good games in him!?

  • Knicks_Fan_SP

tyrus thomas has looked like a bust coming into the season…..but boy hes been a beast as of late

  • Mucha

The Knicks got to get Anthony Randolph because this kid could be special, and he really reminds me of a young Jermaine O’Neal or Kevin Garnett. He has precisely what we need, a great talent, a great contract, aggressivity and shot-blocking abilities.

Donnie Walsh really has to take advantage of Crawford’s willingness to opt out, Randolph’s cloudy relationship with Don Nelson and the ties that he has with Chris Mullin. David Lee for Anthony Randolph and a protected first round draft pick would be a fair trade. Please hurry up Mr. Walsh.

  • Kid Tarheel

Beasley isn’t coming to NY. That’s just absurd.

  • Kid Tarheel

I have a really good idea that no one has thought of. The Knicks should trade for Anthony Randolph. Serously, Anthony Randolph. Guys listen, Anthony Randoplh. How about Anthony Randolph? If the Knicks were going to make a move, I think they should make a move for Anthony Randolph.

  • Mucha

    Haha.

The trade deadline is approaching, and we really have – in my opinion – the opportunity to get one of the greatest talents in the league. I’m sorry if the fact that I keep repeating myself gets annoying but this deadline could be crucial to the Knicks future because of David Lee and Nate Robinson’s contracts.

  • jcmoney

FINALLY! Someone is making sense around here! Now all we need is someone to rally some support for a Michael Beasley trade.

  • jcmoney

Mucha, Anthony Randolph is one of the greatest talents in the league? Really? He is a rookie who shows some promise. I think you are getting just a little to giddy.

His greatest asset is his length and from my observations, he actually has below average talent on both sides of the ball. Right now, he scores, rebounds, and blocks shots purely on the fact that he is 6’10 with a huge wing span. He doesnt have a post game, a jump shot, proper foot work, or the ability to guard anyone with a proper back to the basket move. He is too thin to guard anyone close to his size (thats why he plays a lot at SF).

Put this in perspective, maybe it will calm you down: Despite being over a foot taller than little Nate Robinson, he weighs only THIRTY POUNDS, yes 3 0 pounds, more than him. (210-180)

So now maybe you can calm down. Good prospect? Yes. Fills SOME needs? Yes. Can’t miss future star that Walsh NEEDS TO GET NOW? Absolutely not.

  • Mucha

I understand what you are talking about, and that’s why I put a FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK in the scenario. Randolph is still a prospect but remember how thin Kevin Garnett was, and the kid is only 19 years old. Now if we could get their draft pick this year, that would give us the opportunity to get Monroe or Harden and that’s precisely why I was making this suggestion. It was not only about Randolph.
