Rose for Miller?

by Chris Alvino on February 16th, 2009 at 6:39 pm

UPDATE: Alan Hahn states that the Knicks have not reached out to Sacramento at all…

The Sacramento Bee feels that the Knicks are in play for Brad Miller and that they are believed to be offering the expiring contract of Malik Rose to get him.

“That’s also the case in the scenarios regarding Brad Miller. The veteran center has drawn little interest to this point, but he may become more intriguing by the day to teams that fall short in attempts to land more prominent big men such as Amare Stoudemire of Phoenix or Chris Kaman or Marcus Camby of the Los Angeles Clippers.

New York, according to sources, is in play for Miller with an offer involving forward Malik Rose’s expiring contract ($7.6 million).”

I am not sure how this trade would work, as Malik’s contract does not match up with Miller’s.  Whether there are trade exceptions that can used or not, I am not sure.  But assuming that the Bee is on point with this, I am in favor of making this deal.  We have seen the Knicks get tortured in the paint this year.  While Miller is no savior, he is a legit starting center in this league.  He can shoot, pass, and is unselfish… three attributes D’Antoni would love.

We have said all along that it is highly likely that Malik gets traded before Thursday’s deadline.  Expiring deals are like gold in this market.  Teams want to cut costs.  As I have said before, hopefully Dolan is willing to pony up and seize the opportunity.

Rose and Jeffries would work under the cap for Miller.

Id do that just to free up the additional 6+ mil in 10/11

and Im not in love with Miller.

  • Chris Alvino

I do not think they would not want Jeffries.

  • BiggieSmalls

double negative.. I thought BC teaches netter than that ;-)

seriously.. JJ is a relatively reasonable contract and a player they could use or flip down the road — assuming he stays healthy.. and Miller is gone by 10/11 or a great 12+ mil expiring next year.

Im liking this deal better for the short and long term. Opens a roster spot too for a D League guard.

I wouldnt call it sideways.. Lee can slot back to PF and Miller is mostly an outside player.. I just dont think he can run in the offense.

  • Chris Alvino

Take out that second not…. good catch.

I am still not sold they would want JJ.

  • rico

    so how many “not’s”
    and which JJ?
    we have 2.

one is hurt the other is limited

  • BiggieSmalls

if we trade Snacks the receiving team can not get the insurance payoff for his contract in 09/10..

Snacks is 100% likely to exercise his player option then receive a buyout and i think insurance will cover him for the blown out achilles..

Jared has a plyer option for 10/11 worth 6.8 mil.. not a real terrible cost for an admittedly limited rotation player..

If Donnie has that deal on the table he needs to take it and run.. Jared and Malik for Brad Miller.

Hoops hype is throwing around all sorts of Sac rumors including Salmones. maybe Jared woudl be part of a three way .. or Malik..

Just do something Donnie.. save some more 10/11 cap room and bring in a player for Malik and Ill be happy..

  • LouisQ

after a quick trip to the trade machine, i found that rose plus one of tim thomas, jeffries, or jerome would work financially.

none of the above players is vitally important, so if we can swing this to get a little better now and save 6 mil, let’s do it

Eh – I don’t like the idea of including Jeffries. I don’t want to make Jeffries out to be a defensive stopper or a premier shot blocker or anything like that. But at least he talks on defense, tries to put himself in the proper position and tries to help his teammates get in the proper defensive position as well. At least he’ll occasionally wander into the paint on defense and put a 6’10″ frame in the lane. Brad Miller and David Lee in your front court – yesh, I can’t imagine an easier duo to play against. Again, I don’t think JJ is a vital piece, and I like the idea of clearing his contract – eventually – but I’m not convinced Brad Miller-for- Jared Jeffries makes this team, as presently comprised, better. Now if you tell me that we also trade Nate for a shot blocker or lock-down defender, then that obviously changes the scenario. I just don’t feel Brad Miller adds anything that’s missing. Seems like a lateral move at best, and I’m not looking for a lateral move. I want to see this group make a playoff push.

  • http://www.hotstovenewyork.com gozer

For instance, why even explore Miller if Tyson Chandler is available? ( As ESPN seems to think he is.) The expiring contracts of Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith?? You’re telling me the Knicks can’t do better than that? Say, Malik Rose and Nate Robinson?

I would take Chandler and Lee in the front court before I’d take Miller and Lee.

  • BiggieSmalls

the problem with Chandler is he has a 12.7 million dollar option in 10/11 which totally blows out any chance of getting Lebron.. neer mind two top free agents.

I can live with Miller as the C for the next year and a half so long as he doesnt infringe upon plan 2010. Chandler blows that away.. we’d be essentially putting the terrible old Bulls team back together with Chandler, Curry and Nate playign the Ben Gordon role.

I dont see Miller as a lateral move as he clears almost 7 mil from the 2010/11 cap… And Jared J. isnt setting the world on fire as you mentioned. Doing a two for one opens up a spot for a D league player to block shots.. How about two second rounders for Sean Williams?

  • BiggieSmalls

Another thing to remember is that Miller becomes a big 12 plus million dollar expiring contract NEXT year which can possibly be used to get a real big horse to play with Lebron..

Believe me .. I dont think Miller is part of the LT solution. But he could be a useful player and set us up for the next move.. Jeffries is just an injury waiting to happen.

  • Chris Alvino

Miller is not a lateral move at all. He is putting up 12 points and 8 rebounds per game. He will play over 30 minutes per game. He will start. He will put up 4 assists per game. Malik Rose does not play…. at all.

    Not even close to lateral.

Preferably, Walsh would be able to move Rose for Mike Miller, who I feel would be a better fit on our team. But if Walsh trades for Brad Miller by ditching Rose, he will be making a nice stride for this team.

  • Chris Alvino

Also, if Miller shows that he can play in this system, then who knows, maybe he can be a LT player here. When he is 34, the Knicks might be able to resign him on the cheap to simply be another big body. That is getting a bit ahead of ourselves, but there is a good chance that this team might only be able to sign one superstar and fill other holes with lesser stars.

  • jcmoney

I can see Miller jogging up and down the court chasing the action now. The guy doesnt have the legs to get involved in this offense consistently. I think his skill set would be great in the offense if he had the speed or athleticism to be a factor.

I would deal for Chandler if we also were able to get rid of Jeffries or Curry in a seperate deal. Chander is like the anti-Brad Miller, would fit our team perfectly. He’d be able to take over Lee’s pick and roll game, dominate the boards, block shots, everything we need.

  • BiggieSmalls

as long as he puts up 12-8-4, hits some shots and expires in 2010 Ill take his lumbering ,,

  • Earl The Pearl

I’m down for getting Miller in a deal for Rose +. I’d like to keep Jeffries but …. Miller is a legit center who will clog the middle (a little). He is also a good passer (JJ is certainly not) and has been very consistent over his year.

By the way, CHRIS ALVINO, I’m a BC grad as well. What year did you graduate? I graduated in 1980. Yes, I was there during the Ernie Cobb, Michael Bowie, Rick Kuhn, Jim Sweeney years..

  • Earl The Pearl

Like Eddy Curry is going to be out on the wing on a fast break?

Miller doesn’t have to lead the break. He can be a trailer.

  • BiggieSmalls

The only Break Curry is out on is a Cupcake Break

  • Chris Alvino

Still here. I graduate in May (hopefully). That’s awesome though. Good to hear. Did you see the game last night? Rushing the court was awesome.

  • http://www.hotstovenewyork.com gozer

I thought about the contract. I think Tyson Chandler could be a huge piece this year and next. I think it’s important that the Knicks make a playoff push and sustain that standard next season in order to lure Lebron and other big-time free agents. I take Tyson chandler at 12.7M in 2010/11 if I can jettison Eddy Curry sometime between now and next summer. There are few athletic shot blockers that would fit D’Antoni’s system better than Chandler.

  • http://www.hotstovenewyork.com gozer

I think Miller on the floor makes us significantly worse defensively – especially when he’s out there with DLee. I don’t think Miller’s 12-8 line translates to this team. That’s how I see it. Rose for Mike Miller is an improvement. Rose for Brad Miller is lateral, in my mind.

  • http://www.hotstovenewyork.com gozer

assuming Jeffries goes in the deal, obviously

  • http://www.hotstovenewyork.com gozer

Brad Miller? Long-term? If Isiah were still here I’d be concerned we could see a Shaq-Miller front court.

  • http://www.hotstovenewyork.com gozer

“Chandler is like the anti-Brad Miller, would fit our team perfectly. He’d be able to take over Lee’s pick and roll game, dominate the boards, block shots, everything we need.”

My thoughts exactly. Of course, we assuming that Walsh can dump Curry or Jeffries between now and next year, but I never thought the Knicks would escape from underneath Z-Bo’s deal and look what happened.

  • http://www.hotstovenewyork.com gozer

This team doesn’t need a guy who can go 12-8-4…It needs a guy who can hit open shots OR block shots OR handle the ball like a point-guard or point-forward. I’d take two dozen other players before I’d add Brad Miller.

  • Chris Alvino

gozer- I have a question for you. Who would you take over Brad Miller? Who can the Knicks conceivably get for Malik’s expiring deal would you rather have? Or would you rather have Malik simply stay on the team?

If you can name ten players that we can realistically get for the expiring deal of Malik, who will start for our team and expire before 2010, I will be impressed. I will give you one right now: Mike Miller. Give me nine more.

  • Chris Alvino

I know we agree on Mike Miller though. I would take him in a heartbeat on this team. He would be a fantastic fit.

  • Earl The Pearl

I did not see the game last night. I was driving from Long Island to Philadelphia. But I caught the highlights. Awesome! I take it you were at the game. Brings back fond memories. I had a great experience at BC and loved living in Boston.

So, what do you think of this year’s squad?

  • Chris Alvino

Rice is incredible. I am not sure about his NBA potential, but he has something that plenty of more talented players do not have: the heart of a lion.

Joe Trapani is a good player. He can stroke it from the outside and is a very active rebounder. Reggie Jackson is going to be a star in the ACC. Sanders and Raji are good guys to have starting on the wings. They have legit size and athleticism. They are just a bit inconsistent and they don’t seem to play well at the same time as a duo.

I think that this team can make some noise in the ACC tourney. The problem with them is their plays. I am not trying to degrade Skinner as a coach, but this team does not have any set inbounds plays or press breaks that work. The flex offense is the only offense we run. When it does not work, there are rarely adjustments made.

  • jcmoney

I agree with Gozer that Millers 12-8-4 doesn’t translate to this team. That works in a half court offense where the point guard waits for Miller to spot up down low and then runs the offense, not when every play our guys are running up and down the court shooting within the first 10 seconds of the shot clock. When I said Miller would be lumbering down the court, I didnt mean on fast breaks, I meant on most possesions. Its not a matter of him finishing fast breaks, its a matter of him getting involved in the offense. He is not a defensive player, he is good set in the post, and our offense doesnt really revolve around a player getting that chance. See: Shaq on the Suns last year.

My biggest problem with Miller is that if we are going to make a trade, it should be for something we need. A defensive post presence or a shot blocker or a dead eye shooter. Millers’ 12-8-4, which will not be 12-8-4 on the Knicks, does not add anything to the team. We dont need more points, rebounds, or assists. We need someone to stop us from getting abused down low.

  • http://www.hotstovenewyork.com gozer

Chris – You sound like you want to make a trade just for the sake of making a trade. If Brad Miller’s all I can get for Malik, then I keep him and let his deal expire in the summer. I want to see the Knicks make a playoff push this season and improve next season to where we’re a .500 team that looks appealing to impending free agents. I’m not convinced that Brad Miller helps that cause. In fact, I think it probably hurts us in pursuit of that goal (I feel the same way about adding a guy like Shaq. No offense to either player, but you’re talking about pounding square pegs into round holes).

As I mentioned, a guy like Tyson Chandler, I feel, would have been a great fit in this offense, though now it seems he’s OKC-bound. For a guy that’s the right fit, I’d consider adding his money in 2010. It’d be a tough decision, obviously, but it’s something I’d consider.

Anyway, ten players that we could “realistically” get for Malik? Do the salaries have to match exactly, because clearly they don’t in the case of Malik and Brad Miller. The question of what’s realistic is also pretty subjective. Here are a few: Kurt Thomas, Jason Collins, Sasha Pavlovic, Luke Ridnour, Antonio Daniels, Tony Battie, Mikki Moore, Mike James, Etan Thomas. Role players.

  • http://www.hotstovenewyork.com gozer

Incidentally, Alvino sends me on a goose chase for ten players and then ignores my response. What’s up with that?
