Hughes for Rose and Jerome?

by Chris Alvino on February 18th, 2009 at 11:34 pm

Frank Isola reported that the Knicks and the Bulls were discussing a deal that would send the very available shooting guard, Larry Hughes, to New York.

However, KC Johnson of the Chicago Tribune claims, “And two league sources said a nearly completed deal sending Hughes to the Knicks for Malik Rose and Jerome James fell apart Wednesday.”

I am not a huge fan of Hughes, but this team desperately needs another guard.  Hughes is an up-tempo style guard that likes to run, much like the Knicks.  He is not an ideal fit, but I think he can help this team.

I am curious as to which end the deal fell apart on.  I would have to think that the Knicks asked for more than just Hughes.  Rose’s deal is expiring, and if James does not come back, insurance will cover the rest of his deal.  Hughes is set to make 12-13 million next year, and he does not play at all in Chicago.

This might be dead, but I would not be surprised to hear more about this tomorrow.

Don’t love it..but would do it if talks resurfaced. I’ll also point out that I suggested a similar deal (Rose & JJ for Hughes) in an earlier post last month.

As far as Isola, I agree. What player doesn’t Duncan go to work on. Isola must’ve forgot we don’t have a legit center. Lee & the Knicks would’ve been even further scrutinized had they not utilized that foul to give after the Portland fiasco. Tony Parker probably would’ve made that floater he loves so much.

Chris — Insurance would not pick it up in the case of an existing condition after a trade.

He would have to stay with NYK in order to have insurance cover the achilles injury.. Once traded the team assumes the liability if he passes a physical or has it waived.

    before you ask it..

Lafrenz is different because he is already covered under the insurance.. It takes ONE YEAR for insurance to kick in after an injury.. once the insurance kicks in the player can be traded and have it stay covered..

That is of course unless the player is a medical retirement and then he cant be traded at all. Unless there is a good faith assumption that he is coming back from the injury an the league office determines that likely hood (Van Horn case)

You might be right. I have my head buried in this stuff. My bad. I am all over the place with it.

Tomorrow at 3 cannot come quick enough.

‘m told the Knicks would have been willing to give Chicago Jared Jeffries and Malik Rose for Hughes, but the Bulls would not do that now because they’d be taking on $13.7 million in salary and sending out only $12.8 million, putting them back in tax territory.

Lee did the right thing when he fouled Parker and I appreciated his altruism, but Isola got a point. As great as it was, that foul proved that Lee is not an all-star player. All-stars can’t afford to foul out like that but David Lee did the right thing. He was playing well against Duncan but the refs thought they were in the WNBA or something.
