It’s no secret to us here that Gallinari would have an impact on this team
before the season was over.
Last night, the kid proved that he can be a factor, specifically in the half court, which as we all know (including Kelly Tripucka) is what playoff basketball is all about.
The benefits to the kid’s game are numerous, however it is his height and range that makes him a threat.
His release point, quickness with jab steps, and overall height will allow him the ability to get his shot off. He can pick and pop, play in a two man game with a post player like Al Harrington who can command double teams. Isolating the floor with those two could be very effective against any team.
You have to love the kid’s energy and shot-making ability. You have to love his motor. Defensively, at times, he is overmatched and that’s where his mistakes come, but the positives outweigh the negatives when his shot is falling, which will more often than not.
But what I love about him is that after HE makes a shot, HE makes sure to THANK the person who passed it to him. That thankfulness is contagious.
Anyway, he’s a key piece moving forward, but I’m curious as to what you guy’s think his role should be down the stretch. Is it unrealistic for me to believe that he should be a 20-plus minute guy so long as he’s healthy?

Mark my words, either Anthony Randolph or Danilo Gallinari will be the best player out of last year’s draft class. Believe me. Both are special players, even though I’m a little concerned about Gallinari’s health. I said it before and I’m still saying it now, like Chuck said “I may be wrong but I doubt it”.
Gratitude is a rare quality now. But basketball players look like Santa Claus next to soccer players.
I hope that is a joke. They will both be solid players, but this happened to be a pretty good draft and I can name 5 guys off the top of my head who will be better: rose, mayo, lopez, love, westbrook
Danilo can be a very good player and probably an all-star, but he will never be the best player and a contending team(while Rose and Mayo have that potential). He just doesnt have the athletic ability to have an all around game like some of the other guys in that draft.
think Dirk Nowitzki, he came from 3rd German division, unknown to is own national team.. at a young age Gallo played in the Euroleague etc..
If he’s healthy and works hard, keeps developing he will be up there. Dirk is not that athletic.
you forgot beasley
Yeah, I was giving him the benefit of the doubt by leaving out Beasley and Gordon. Saying “think Dirk Nowitzki” is just ridiculous. First of all, Dirk is a 7 footer and Galo is only 6′ 10. Second of all, you cant expect the guy to be the best possible version of a player with his skill set. Remember when people were saying “think Duncan” about Channing Frye. You gotta be realistic.
i think i have seen a lot more Gallo games than you. And 7 foot to 6 foot 10 is really that much of a difference?
does that mean we can’t compare Nate to anyone, not even Iverson?
Well i remember the first carrer years of Dirk in Dallas, Not Pretty!
You can compare anyone to anyone, you just should expect them to be as good as the best player with their skillset.
I’m not sure what you’re getting at with Nate and Iverson. It seems like a perfect example of what I’m saying. It would be unrealistic to expect Nate to be Iverson, like its unrealistic to expect Gallo to be Dirk.
i really think he got injured because he had no rest for more than a year in Italy beetwen his club and the national team. fingers crossed.
if gallinari doesnt seen a minimum of 20 mins a game the rest of the season, unless his back is bothering him, mike d’antoni is missin the boat, i mean, i almost wonder if it isnt better to start him in the front court with harrington and lee….and have chandler come of the bench, he can set the rythm so quick and his shot can get them a big lead, very quick, i believe his +/- was +14 last night
As ive stated numerous times in the past “I heart Gallinari”
The kid just needs to be out there now. Be a little cautious with the back but other than that, take the training wheels off.
Agreed. This team is not making the playoffs, and if by some chance they do, they aren’t going far.
Let’s play these kids along with whoever they know is going to be around next year. Maybe if they can get the playing time in now, they can create some continuity that will allow them to see .500 next year…what a goal…thanks Isiah…
The poll on the Knicks blog site says it all….Nate Robinson’s minutes should be reduced. This way Gallinari can eat those minutes up. Gallinari’s jump shot and confidence is what this team needs and he’s not getting enough touches by certain team mates and not enough minutes. I’ve also been quite impressed with his defense. He plays more defense than some of the other Knick forwards.
With the few games I’ve seen Gallinari play he really reminds me alot of Detlef Schrempf. And he has the potential to be even better than him. I think coach D’Antoni should just start the kid at this point. Realistically this team is not going to make the post-season so you might as well at least help develop Gallinari a little quicker.
I think having Lee/Chandler/Gallo on the floor and a HUGE part of last nights win againts a tough hawks team could be a telling thing i really feel nate will be gone this offseason for a pick hopefully i think that would be best for us and nates value is at a all time high…..
I think Nate is a good player to be wearing a Knick uniform. He’s good for the fans and media here but if a deal comes along where the Knicks can get a draft pick or package him along with Eddy Curry I think Walsh should act on it. Nate is having a great season and is super athletic but he’s not team oriented at all. He’s a shoot first type of guy and his erratic behavior hurts the Knicks at times. He’s an undersized shooting guard and that’s not going to help this current Knick team. If Nate was on the 1999 Knicks with Larry Johnson, Latrell Sprewell, Marcus Camby, Alan Houson, Charlie Ward, etc…. as a bench player I have no doubt that would be the perfect fit. But because this current team has so many flaws, its not feasible to keep Nate here unless we can re-sign him cheap.
I agree as much as I love nate he isnt right
just so you know…you’re calling him a shoot first kind of player; however, there is another player on the team right now that no one is dogging, but if you look at his track record he is…that player the “rejuventated” larry hughes. The knock on him is the same one you are knocking nate for. Just wanted to point that out
Gallinari is a very good prospect, but I think people are getting a little carried away too soon. Other than scoring efficiently, he isn’t contributing much else. He was supposed to be a good passer, but he’s not getting many assists. Also, he’s always on the perimiter so he’s not getting any boards either. All that may be related to coach D being careful not to get him injured again, but l I’d see to him fill up the rest of the boxscore.
However, we might as well play him and develop him because we aren’t going anywhere.
I have seen plenty of Gallo in euroleague games. The problem on the NBA right now for him, is that, he’s not using is ball control to drive to the basket like he did anytime he wanted in Italy.
I expect him to drive more to the basket next season or even maybe at the end of this one.
Maybe he’s waiting to get a little more muscle.
I think Personally That gallo def. needs to be on the court for 20 plus minutes his versatility and unselfishness adds so much to the offense it’s worth being over matched sometimes on defense (even though i think he’s shown improvement on defense in the way of better understanding what most nba players like to do). It should be interesting however to see what happens when nate comes back because to me the team seemed alot more unselfish last night. Don’t get me wrong I love nate’s ability to score and his passion for the game he puts his heart on the floor which i love (very john starks esque minus the defense) but the ball tends to stick when he’s on the floor because he like’s to iso. I think for this reason he’s a goner next season which will hurt but I’m curious to see what’s going to happen the rest of this season with playing time and his role. Personally I think Mike won’t change his role and just eliminate one or two of the following: jefferies, Q, and Wilcox minutes and give it to gallo. I would rather see jefferies and Q to the bench I think we can get more out of wilcox then we’ve seen. Although I have to say in watching him play he’s sort of going through the motions. I say this because when he sets picks he doesn’t hold it until the guy is forced to switch or change his path he kinda just floats over and then rolls which gains no advantage. Maybe he’s tired because of the running in this system but maybe some of those whispers about losing his passion to play are true.
Nate could be a Leandrinho Barbosa type of player for the Knicks. problem is, Nate is not as team oriented as Barbosa.
I think the lack of a leader, like Ewing or in the future (let’s hope) James or Wade, is the reason Nate keeps the dribble for a bit more than D’Antoni likes.
And it’s a contract year, and i think he knows it’s Lee or him.
My friend and I constantly have the Eric Gordon vs. Gallo debate (me taking Gallo’s side). I came home one night excited at Gallos night and was informned that Gordan went for 42. In the long run, it is easier to find a 6’2 SG who can score than it is a 6’10 forward with Gallo’s skills. Give him 20 min a night. Let the kid grow.
I think when debating that, you have to take in consideration, that Gallo is a kid who came from Italy to play in NEW YORK. He’s doing pretty fine, for someone who got booed in MSG in draft night..
He’s adapting to the life style and the fact that american basketball is a lot more physical than in europe.
They’re both good, no regrets. It’s not like we picked Weiss or passed on Bynum
Call me crazy but shouldn’t the minutes go to whoever matches up better against the other team and how our offense is executing? For instance if our opponent is high scoring taking away our transition offense then Gallo should be put in for half court set ups. If we’re having fun running and gunning then play Krypto. I mean that’s why we have both of them.
Or play both Dani and Krypto if Chandler or Hughes aren’t getting it done.
For all of the headaches N8 may cause, there’s no other player in the history of this league that can do what he can at his size.
That being said, If we do trade him, it better be for a player as talented as he is or a lotto pick. We will need a lost post scorer to open up the perimeter for Gallo. I’m old school. I prefer a mix of half court and transition (a la Utah) as opposed to flat out run and gun. Maybe N8 can be traded for such a player.
If we look at last year’s lottery, the players who are succeeding now are “conventional” talents. Randolph and Gallinari are special, the kind of guys who will be matchup nightmares in the playoffs in the future.
For example, the only player who has outplayed Duncan in the playoffs (except Shaq) was Nowitzki. I don’t think the Gallinari-Nowitzki comparison is on point (Detlef Schrempf and Rashard Lewis are more accurate comparisons) but he was (is) a special player like Gallinari. But after his first year in Dallas, who would have thought he would become 10 times better than Paul Pierce and Vince Carter?
Rose will be an all-star and I agree with the fact the he’ll be a great player. But you know what you’re getting from him. Westbrook’s case is a little bit more complex and I really don’t know what his ceiling is. But both players are typical point guards who will have to compete with Deron Williams and Chris Paul. Michael Beasley is a great talent but he doesn’t seem athletic enough to play as an undersized 4 (not in Spoelestra’s system at least) and he does not shoot well enough from outside to be an oversized 3. He’ll be an all-star but Gallinari and Randolph have more upside because of their size in my opinion. Brooke Lopez will be a top 5 center in the league but he’s a conventional center, I mean basically you know what his game is. I really (really) like Eric Gordon though – and he’ll be a star – but he falls in the same category. The only reason why I could have regrets is Gallinari’s health and I’m really concerned about that.
But Anthony Randolph and Danilo Gallinari have that “how the hell do we guard him” potential. Their games are more unpredictable. Sure, a lot of rookies are playing better now – and a few of them will be Hall-of-famers – but in the long run both could be la creme de la creme.
calm down
saying that rookies will be hall of famers is jumping the gun a bit no?
This was one of the best draft classes in recent memory and clearly the best since LeBron James, Wade and Anthony’s in my opinion. This rookie class is incredibly deep and there are many great talents.
At least a few players will be Hall-of Famers, two or three in my opinion. Why wouldn’t that be the case?
it is possible that players will make it to the hof from this draft class
however, to anoint a rookie status as a sure fire hall of famer is a bit premature. It is possible that they can but there are variables. At least you have to see where i am coming from no?
I never that “this player” or “that one” will be a Hall-of-famer. I just have a feeling telling me that either Anthony Randolph or Danilo Gallinari will make it (I put Derrick Rose in there but that’s more like a low-risk assumption).
I know what you mean, and I didn’t mean to sound affirmative. That’s just a feeling. But I believe in it.
Under that line of thinking you could say guys like AL Harrington, Andrea Bargnani, and Mehmet Okur have the “how the hell do we guard him” potential. Tall guys who can shoot arent as rare as you are making them out to be.
I never that it was because of his height and shooting range. Your statement regarding my point of view is not factual because I never said that.
I think Gallinari has more qualities than being a big man with a 40% shot from three-point range. He has a great handle for his size and he could be a great passer – two qualities Dirk Nowitki is not really known for for example. Harrington is a better athlete but Gallinari is 6’10-6’11, he should have a better shot, higher basketball IQ and better passing skills.
I think Gallinari will be a Detlef Schrempf type of player – great second or third option and a 2 or 3 time all-star – but the sky’s the limit in my opinion.
Anthony Randolph – on the other hand – clearly has Hall-of-fame potential. I even said it before Lamar Odom. He’s 6’10, he has a great handle for his size, he can run the floor like a guard, he can pass, he can steal, he can block shots etc. And he’s not even 20. He could be the whole package.
