Knicks trying to land 1st Rounder in 2010

We talked about this months ago, and it appears Donnie Walsh is trying to land the pick in 2010 that Isiah Thomas gave away in the Stephon Marbury trade.

“…Isiah Thomas’ signature trade, acquiring Stephon Marbury from the Phoenix Suns six years ago – continues to be the trade that keeps on giving … for everyone other than the Knicks.

Included in the Marbury deal was a lottery-protected first-round pick that the Suns eventually traded to the Utah Jazz as part of the Tom Gugliotta deal. Next year, however, the pick is unprotected, so if the Knicks fail to reach the playoffs they will be handing over a lottery pick to Utah.

“I found out about that as I was going through the process (of being hired last year),” says Knicks president Donnie Walsh. “We don’t have a pick. But I’d like to have one.”

The Knicks do own a first-round pick in this year’s draft and barring a miracle turnaround they will be drafting in the lottery. Walsh, according to sources, will try to acquire another first-round pick either this year or next season – and he may be able to land one in a sign-and-trade for either David Lee or Nate Robinson…”

GET TO WORK DONNIE… by all means this is great to hear this coming from walsh we need to make deals this offseason this team is just not good we have no fire power other then chandler, lee, nate,al (even though he chucks the ball more then anything ive ever seen) but we have good trading pieces and I would love deals to be made cause we really need some moving forward….I am really looking forward to this offseason

The Knicks acquiring a 2010 draft pick is very important. There is no guarantee that this team will make the playoffs next year so you might as well take the chance and try to trade to get a draft pick from a team. I can see a team like the Clippers willing to give up their 2010 pick for an expiring contract. Which we have plenty of that going into 2010.
Ricky Rubio doesn’t look like he will enter the draft this year. Imagine the Knicks getting lucky on him in 2010?

The Clippers will make the playoffs next year, at least they won’t be far from making it. Especially if Dunleavy gets a job in another city.

The Knicks need to have a pick in 2010, getting Utah’s back would be great because we’d have our fate in our hands. If we’re good we’re good, if we suck we get a lottery pick. Harrington could have been a great trade asset for that pick because Utah has a void to fill at the shooting forward spot, yesterday’s performance was a dud from that perspective. I still got love for Al.

Donnie Walsh will have to do a great job this summer, I mean 2010 is coming.
