Marbury on E60

by Tommy Dee on April 29th, 2009 at 5:20 pm

So I was watching the Marbury story as told by ESPN last night and I had a wide range of emotions going on. Click here for video.

As I’ve said numerous times I rooted hard for Steph because we are similar in age and I was a point guard back in the day when NYC  guards were seemingly at their peak.

Consider Derrick Phelps and Khalid Reeves at Christ the King, Seldon Jefferson at Bishop Loughlin, then later Eric Harris, Junior Clarke and Kareem Reid at St. Raymond’s Shandue McNeil at Molloy, and Shammgod Wells at LaSalle, NYC had some serious talent at the guard position right around the time Steph took over the city.

So when Steph came here I rooted for the fact that the ultimate NYC guard, in a  time where the notion had reached mythic proportions, was about take back Manhattan for good.

It didn’t happen.

Much like Patrick Ewing’s legacy will be determined by Michael Jordan and falling just short, Marbury will be defined by being in the eye of a horrid period. He’s the poster child.

Granted, he may not have been told he wasn’t in the plans, as he claims, which are justified based on his coach telling him everyone gets a fresh start, but he had to see that the organization was moving on.

He had to realize that his admitted mental issues clouded how much he impacted this franchise negatively.

Now he’s in Boston and I just realized last night how relieved I am that he’s no longer is part of this organization. There is hope now and in a brief year, other than Eddy Curry‘s contract, Donnie Walsh has fumigated the stench of the last 5 years. But at the same time, it’s easy to feel bad for Steph as his issues that he took so long to deal with easily played a huge part in his horrid tenure here. So in many ways I sympathize.

Good luck in Boston Steph,we’re moving forward full steam ahead.

people need to stop paying attention to this clown.all he had to do was suck ity up and show the coach he wanted to make it work.instead he behaved like a brat.he gets paid to play a damn game for pete’s sake.smh.

I was never happier than when D’Antoni finally exorcized that primary demon from the Knicks, but even I am shocked at how bad he is now. He is demonstrating conclusively why so many teams got better when he left. He’s not even a major player on the Celtics, but he can’t take the pressure of his backup role. He looks like a lost rookie that is scared shitless to be on the court.

I dont think so. The stench of apathy and the slime of entitlement still exist.

I was perusing some twitter feeds yesterday and am stunned by a few things.

    1. Shaq is dieting and working out TWO TIMES a DAY as we speak in preparation for next year.

    2. Curry is consumed with old movies and water balloon fights at Nates crib while he gets ready to start his diet/workout regime in a month or so.

    3. Wilson Chandler is runinating on why Popeyes is not open 24/7 as he scarfs down fried foods and kool aid at 2AM

    4. Q Rich is “relaxin in chi town .. puffin in the clouds”

These players need to understand that being in the NBA is a 365 day a year job. Each one should TODAY be workgin on their diet and workout regime.

Other players who have a wining mentality are striving to get better while our crew sits back and enjoys the fruits of their 7 figure plus paychecks.

These tweets are part and parcel to the problem with this crew. And the contrast draw between those who want to get better and those who are happy where they are could not be clearer.

Curry just tweeted that he is NOW in Detroit and will be “spending the summer working out with Uncle Wes. Wish me luck!!”

my comments stand .. we’ll see .. Q needs to set a stronger example for the young guys here who look up to him.

    but good luck Eddie.

  • Where expiring contracts happen

@ Italian Stallion – have you watched the playoffs? He’s been nothing but a solid contributor off the bench which is exactly the role they needed him to fill. I dont get your post

    @ Where expiring contracts happen

What are YOU watching? Doc Rivers didn’t even play him in the second half in game 5.

He was a -17 in 5(!) minutes in game 4.

He was a -15 in 10 minutes in game 2.

He scored 0 points and had 2 turnovers in 10 minutes in game 1.

Arguably he had an ok game in game 3 when he got all the garbage minutes in the Celtics blowout.

    Biggie,

I hope DW has someone following the tweets of everyone in the NBA. Soon, we’ll be hearing more about Twitter as a marketing tool and players will get wiser about their usage but till then, it could be a great way to separate those who get it from those don’t. Chandler, a resigned Nate and Jefferies for Bosh.

  • DanL

Ha…he’s back in Chicago now. Didn’t take long to leave Detroit.

  • BiggieSmalls

ha ha .. saw that .. I cant believe it..

He’s setting up a house in Michigan and then flying private to Chicago to be wiht his fam for the weekend.

SEND THE FAM TO MICHIGAN FOR CHRSSAKES!

I bet the next tweet will be about setting up his new 60 inch flat screen and Blu Ray DVD player in his new Michigan Crib.

Players are already aware of the marketing potential and future implications of the site. Shaq, arguably that best player/promoter in all of sports, clearly has the hang of it already. Those posts are doing exactly what they are meant to do… not that i don’t believe he is actually working that hard… i know he is.

These players we have now… who cares? It’s sad to hear something like that about chandler, but to be honest, we can’t really take any of those things too seriously. Delonte west eats fried chicken before games. lets not make any broad conclusions based on some silly babbling on the internet. Chandler just doesn’t realize the way people will scrutinize every word he puts on there. Shaq does.

  • italian stallion

OMG are you actually watching the games?

Since he started playing for the Celtics he can’t even hit a wide open shot, has stopped taking it to the basket, and often makes unwise passes because he’s too scared to death to shoot when he’s in perfect position to do so. He’s so bad, Doc doesn’t even want to play him unless the Celtics are in control or he has no choice in the matter because of foul trouble, injury, or desperately needed rest for a starter. I’m still waiting to see a brown spot make it’s way through those green shorts if he ever actually has to shoot an important shot at the end of a game.

Seriously, he’s scared to death out there. It’s obvious. It’s so painful to watch, I’ve been rooting for him because even though I never really liked the guy, I don’t want to see his career be over and to see him continue to embarass himself like this. It’s sad.

Way to read into things way too much, biggie.
