T-Mac a Knick?

by Chris Alvino on May 11th, 2009 at 3:15 pm

Frank Isola thinks that the Knicks should go after Tracy McGrady this summer.  According to Isola, the Knicks can offer Larry Hughes and the contract of Cuttino Mobley to get a deal done. McGrady is coming off microfracture surgery, and it has been reported that his desire to play has diminished severely.  He has an expiring deal this season.

Would I do it?  Absolutely.  Would the Rockets do it?  They would save about $10 million dollars on this trade and would receive a player that will likely not get hurt next year.  They would probably do it.  But would this be the best way to use Mobley’s contract?  If so, then sign me up.  Even if McGrady doesn’t come back to form and continues to be passive about the game, will he be much worse than Hughes?  At the very least it is a wash.  So discounting the extra $10 million that the Knicks would have to pay (I doubt that Walsh and Dolan are discounting it), the Knicks could find a good player out of that kind of deal.  I highly doubt that any other team would take on McGrady.  The Knicks simply have a unique asset in Mobley’s contract that no other team has.

I’m not sure about Mcgrady, I think he’s too soft mentally to deal with playing here in New York! And im sure as you guys know us New York fans already know mcgrady’s soft, and he would get booed from the very first jumpshot he takes , just like Larry Hughes did! Mcgrady is finished he’s soft menatlly and physically. Mcgrady = Mr. Glass from the movie “UNBREAKABLE”.

  • Chris Alvino

Well, excluding the extra money that he is owed, this would be a no-brainer. Even if he cannot get going with the Knicks, is he much worse than Hughes. The Knicks can afford to play “musical contracts” so long as they only bring in expiring deals.

And hey, if TMac ever came back to form, he can be a nice secondary player on our team.

Let’s assume that the Knicks draft Curry. A backcourt of Curry and McGrady can score in bunches.

At the very least, McGrady would give the Knicks a bit of star power and a guy to take the last shot. He can also sell a ton of jerseys in NY.

At 29 years old, I am not sure if I can call him completely done. Before his surgery last year, he was a step slow and still put up decent figures. Not 22 million dollar figures, but decent ones.

  • The_Guy

The problem you have with T Mac is, can he make it through an entire season? He’s extremely injury prone. So you’re essentially trading a realtively healthy player, for a guy coming off major surgery, and whose game relies on his athleticism.

It sounds alot like Antonio McDyess a few yrs ago and we all know how that worked out.

If we were getting a healthy T Mac, at age 24, then I’d say yes. But his best days are behind him, and there’s a good chance that he’ll miss 30 + games at least.

Sorry, but I’ll pass on him.

  • BiggieSmalls

I honestly dont expect much from McGrady this coming year. When those older players get the micro fracture surgery it is usually a death sentence. A younger player can rebound much more easily from it. Plus McGrady has been a constant stream of injuries literally his whole career.

The key advantage is it opens a roster spot and rids us of Chuck em up Larry. IF Mobley’s contract is tradeable and there are no other deals out there (Shaq/Nash) i do it.

I’d much rather make it part of a larger deal maybe including Duhon, Jeffries and a resigned Artest with a draft pick

    Hey Chris,

    Check this out.

    http://www.nba.com/playerfile/tracy_mcgrady/career_stats.html

In 11 seasons, McGrady has never played 82 games. Not even once. At this point in his career, with bad knees and a bad back, he’s essentially a jump shooter. But if you look at his percentages, he seems to be shooting worse and worse each year.

  • J-Knick

I strongly agree with BiggieSmalls. McGrady’s a nice name to sell jerseys but his one-year rental won’t bring much to this team. I doubt he would be a good model for our young studs.

There are probably much better options to use Mobley’s contract, should it be tradeable. To get rid of Jeffries, for instance !

    Isola’s out-of-the-box ideas … this guy’s good at creating blogging activity !!

  • KBT1615

Id do it in a heartbeat and I would buy a T-Mac jersey the day it happened. When healthy he isn’t worse than Hughes is bad hey we have him for one season.
Plus you guys are guys are expecting too much he gets injured ok more playing time for Gallo he doesn’t hey we got a star.. win win.

  • The_Guy

    Hey KBT,

What if he can’t play because of injuries, and Gallo doesn’t recover from his back problems. Nobody wins. I don’t know if coming off of back surgery, Gallo is ready for major minutes right away.

This trade brings back memories of McDyess. I remember guys saying, but what if he’s healthy?

  • Bart

Not a bad Idea but it takes mins. from Gallinari because Chandler would slide over to the 3 send Bad Back to the bench. It gives us a star he might be washed up though so im not sure I wouldn’t be mad at the move though and Tracy is not soft he might be injury prone but soft no way you need to go back and checkout Tracy in his Magic days he never backed down from any one that guy is tough.

    Three words for you:

    No, no, and hell-fucking-no!

  • funkel81

he’d already be a Knick if Isiah was still in charge…another overrated player making 20 million.

    no thanks

  • bob knick slave

THE KNICKS already have enough guys who are injured,…..PASS.NO WAY ON McGRADY.i can think of better ways to spend millions

  • KBT1615

Thats too many if’s to take serious.

  • KBT1615

yea for one season and then he is gone. And what injured players is the guy under me talking about.

  • Chris Alvino

The difference between TMac and McDyess is that the Knicks gave up a bunch for him. They gave up Camby and a top 10 pick in Nene for McDyess. If the Knicks gave up only Mobley and Hughes, they would not trade any young pieces or any pieces for the future. Walsh would essentially trade contracts. At the very worst, we lose out on a pretty good defensive guard in Hughes.

At the very best, we nab a prime time scorer that can put up 20 on any night and draw some serious attention to this team.

I would be all for this deal if he is able to come back within the first month of the season.

I would not give up more than Hughes and Mobley though. If the Rockets would rather have Q Rich, they can have him. But Harrington cannot be dealt for an injury risk.

  • CircleLimit4

McGrady is obviously is not the pure scorer he once was but we often overlook T-Mac as a great passer and how good he is at snagging the long rebound.

And it’s not like he wasn’t playing well before the most recent injury. He put up a triple double or 2 early in the season. I don’t see the move being so risky if it’s just an expiring deal. I would probably bite.

  • cragganmor

Realistically, I don’t think T-Mac will be able to do much more than come off the bench for 15 minutes/game having just had microfracture. Add in his injury track record and this is not a guy that can or will ever be able to play the type of 35 mpg role that Coach favors for his 8 rotation guys, certainly for for 82 games a season.

Yes, he’s 29, but as they say “it’s not the years, it’s the mileage…”

The only way we deal for T-Mac is cap relief; send Houston Eddy Curry and the contract of Cuttino Mobley. The Rockets do it because of Deke’s retirement and Yao’s injured so often; they’re thin at C. Hopefully Eddy will be in decent shape by mid-summer.

  • The_Guy

@ KBT – Too many ifs?? That’s ridiculous. One guy has a history of injuries, is past his prime, and is coming off microfracture surgery. A surgery that everyone knows takes at least a year to recover from.

The other is a rookie that played under 30 games and just had back surgery, and may have been injury prone in Italy.

But you still think it’s smart to count on them for next season? You don’t think the odds are REALLY high that both these guys could miss alot of games next year? And since the Knicks don’t have a draft pickk in 2010, they could very well end up in the lottery again with nothing to show for it, if Gallo and McGrady were to go down.

    Hell no to this trade.

  • Chris Alvino

I’d still be for this move.

  • KBT1615

Like I said too many Ifs what if we traded for T-Mac and he got hurt and then What If Gallinari got hurt again then what if we came out this draft with nothing ok.
Yea you have assumptions but you cant prove what hasn’t happened. Yea there is a high probability T-mac will get hurt again but you have nothing saying Gallo will.
Also why is it Hell No we still have this years draft pick, It doesn’t effect 2010 cap, and we are giving up Hughes for A Star when he is playing.

  • aarbel

Different skill set, but look at Grant Hill and despite his oft-injured seasons, when he plays, he is a very effective player. Put T-Mac in this offense, and I think he could give the Knicks a steady 15pts per (as opposed to L-Hughes’ 3 points, 30 points, 6 points, 9 points series of games)….Mobley’s contract is unique, but unless someone would be willing to give an expiring contract and take back Jeffries for instance, you might as well get a former all-star who could give you something in what could be his last chance at a contract.

  • Clancy3434

Trading for Tracy McGrady, an over-rated, oft-injured, never-won-a-playoff-series volume shooter is a very Isiah Thomas type of move.

    Walsh would be a fool.
