Wilcox Interview on HoopsWorld TV
By Chris Alvino - May 16, 2009 6:37 pm

If you haven’t seen this yet, check out Chris Wilcox’s interview with Bill Ingram for HoopsWorld TV.  In the interview, Chris Wilcox (who is wearing his Knicks warm-up gear) talks about his rough season last year.  He says that he was not able to get completely comfortable with the Knicks and that he believes that with a full training camp, D’Antoni’s system can be perfect for him.  In about 13 mpg with the Knicks, Wilcox averaged 5.4 ppg and 3.2 rpg.  Honestly, I thought he should have gotten more time than he did, but when he was out there, he never really broke out of his shell.  While in Seattle, Wilcox was good for about 14 ppg and 7 rpg when he was playing close to 30 minutes per game.

It never appeared that D’Antoni got comfortable with Wilcox either.  I am not sure why, but from the very beginning, Wilcox did not get the burn that he probably should have.  Wilcox appears to want to stay in NY, but I am not sure if the Knicks want him to stay.  If Wilcox is expecting to make close to the $6 million that he made last year, I am not sure how Walsh can want to keep him.  Wilcox can help, but he is not worth that kind of money.  Not to this team at least.  He is a decent rebounder and not a good shotblocker.  At a much reduced price, wouldn’t Stromile Swift be a better option as a backup forward / center for this team?  At the very least, Swift has a history of blocking shots, and he can probably be had on the very cheap and for one year.  Also, at close to $6 million, I wonder if the Knicks would be able to get Drew Gooden?  Gooden is a better rebounder and a tougher player.  But again, I just don’t think D’Antoni is going to give an average player a multi-year deal this off-season.  If a player like Ron Artest or Lamar Odom would like to come home and play for the MLE, that is a different story.   Just a thought.

Should the Knicks keep Wilcox?

Should the Knicks keep Wilcox?
NO!

Unless we get a C in return for Nate (unlikely in my opinion), sign BirdMan to the MLE for 2-3yrs, and someone like Swift or Ratliff for the MIN for 1yr. Draft a PG.

BirdMan
Lee
Gallo
Chadler
S.Curry
———-
Harrington
Hughes
Duhon
E.Curry / Swift / Ratliff

Hell no. He’s overrated in my opinion.

A milli could throw the whole plan out the window, I wouldn’t want to sacrifice that for a bench player (because that’s what he is).

I like wilcox, but there are bigger plans that need to be executed. And signing him to another contract should be towards the end of the list of what the knicks need to do. Unless we can use him in a sign and trade for a piece that won’t affect our our financial plans/ a big that blocks shots and protects the lane.

oh yeah, and HELL NO to bringing in Drew Gooden. That guy is a curse. Every team he plays for ends up losing. And after they get rid of him, they seem to become great teams. Don’t need a player like that. Plus he looked like a complete A-hole when he had that little patch of hair on the back of his head, under his headband. I would love for us to grab Artest for a MLE, but after the way Houston has been playing in the playoffs, I don’t think they will be looking to lose him. Odom I like, but only for a very small contract. He is too streaky, and only seems to play hard when the situation is in his favor.

Good points. I don’t want Gooden either because he is not worth giving a multi-year contract to.

Stro Swift can be an interesting guy to bring in on the cheap. He was a guy that Tommy called for last summer. Now that he is a free agent, I think the Knicks would be a nice landing spot for him.

Gut feeling: Wilcox goes elsewhere. My guess: Orlando, Houston or San Antonio.

However, Wilcox might be a guy that finds himself looking for work more than a guy who has his picking of teams in the league to play for. If teams are being frugal with their money this summer, Wilcox is definitely not a guy to break the bank on.

If Wilcox can only get 2-3 million per year, I would consider bringing him back. For anything more than 3, then let him walk.

yeah under 3mil a year wouldn’t be bad, but I don’t think D’antoni feels that wilcox fits into his scheme. Otherwise, why wouldn’t he use him this past season and try to involve him more than just averaging 13mpg. Unlesssss MD is a step ahead all of us and didn’t play him to make him look as if he has no value, allowing the knicks to sign him to a very small contract. haha I doubt it but you never know…

Wilcox could prove useful, especially if we’re forced into a half court game. But I agree, not worth a penny over 3 million. Either way, the Knicks should determine Lee’s fate before considering Wilcox.

Agreed. Wilcox won’t go anywhere fast if he is looking for the full MLE.

With a plethora of good free agent veterans, the MLE will be a very important tool for GMs in the league to use to fill holes on their team. Ron Artest is playing himself out of that conversation, but there are other players that can fit the mold.

Wilcox might end up in Boston replacing Powe (out until at least the All-Star break) and Mikki Moore. I wouldn’t mind bringing Moore if we can’t get BirdMan.

They measured Blake Griffin and he is 6′10 not 6′7 like somebody thought.

I don’t see Wilcox making much of a difference. I do like the idea of bring in Stromie Swift, if he has anything left for the vet’s minimum.

I feel that Gooden, Wilcox and Swift are the same player. They are all athletically gifted players who lack the basketball IQ to fully develop their skills and become effective players for winning teams. Please keep all three of those players off of my team. D’Antoni likes smart instinctive basketball players, and I don’t see that from those three. Those were the type of FAs that we used to sign with Isiah. I’d like to see us go after a Brandon Bass or Chris Anderson (like someone else mentioned). The kind of player that can spark the team with positive energy off of the bench. Guys still with something to prove.

Lamar and Ron-Ron are FAR more valuable than a mid-level exception.

Artest may have some ‘emotional baggage,’ but at this point in his career i think his craziness only helps him.

Defense is just as important, if not more important than offense, but since offense is more easily quantified, prolific scorers like Durant have more negotiating power. Durant will end up earning max contracts while i truly believe that Artest is a more valuable player than him… Add Artest to any contender and they are instantly the favorites to win it all; Today’s game 7, regardless of the result, should serve as proof of that. If anything, Artest should be getting a raise this summer.

His shot selection is still questionable, but he’s starting to play a much smarter offensive style. He tends to hold the ball patiently while waiting for options to form and plays to set up, almost playing a less efficient, more sporadic form of the point-forwardish ‘LeBron role’ for his team.

I truly believe Ron is in his prime.

The MLE is more suitable for a player like Grant Hill, and after his season this year, even that is pushing it.

By the way, Grant Hill would be perfect for us. He is a great leader, a great teammate, a great defender, and a great playmaker for his position; Those are all the things we are severely lacking. If he did become available on a MLE for 3 years to close out his career, i would take him in a heartbeat.

No thanks, Wilcox and Gooden.

Birdman is sweet, but i don’t think his game is the type that belongs in an MD starting lineup, and therefore don’t think he’s worth the money (to us) that he deserves. Plus, he’s becoming an Icon out there; they love him, and i think their priority this summer is to re-sign him.

If he’s re-uped for one year with the same salary as last year I’m fine with it … would be another expiring contract to play with if the Lebronathon ends.

I wouln’t offer any multi-year contract this summer to guys like Wilcox, Swift or even Odom (taking odom would just limit gallo’s minutes). Artest would be the exception but that would mean letting Lee and Robinson walk. My bet is Lee walks and Robinson finishes with the QO.

Birdman will be resigned this summer by the Nuggs .. they’d rather let Linas walk than him

Theres someting I would like to share with you guys

Let’s assume that the 2010 plan falls dead this summer with all interesting FA resigning with their teams. Donnie would have to use NY’s only asset, dolan deep pockets, to make the team better, and use the 50 M$ expiring contracts.

Here’s a list of big, long-term contracts that teams might be willing to get rid off for financial reasons. Some could even reap a pick in return :
Baron Davis
C Maggete
M Jaric (+p)
T Chandler
M Peterson (+p)
J Posey (+p)
A Jamison
R Jefferson
D Gadzuric (+p)
E Brand
J Calderon
G Wallace
N Mohammed (+p)
V Radmanovic (+p)
J Tinsley (+p)
T murphy (+p)

Would you trade some of our expiring contracts, assuming it doesn’t cost us draft picks, for some of these guys ? do you have any other names ?

Or would you rather keep the payroll as low as possible to wait for 2011, 2012, … ?

I’d say that a rotation of

Calderon / S Curry or Flynn or Lawson
Robinson / Jaric
W Chandler / Posey
Gallo / Jamison
T Chandler / Lee

with additional future picks could be a good base for the future

Makes any sense to you guys ??

So you want to use all of our 2010 cap space for a few ‘good’ players like Calderon, Chandler, and Jamison?

Walsh would not do that. No on Calderon. No on Posey. Because of his contract, no on T Chandler. No on Jamison who proved this past year that while he can put up sick numbers, he cannot lead a team by himself. Definitely no on Jaric (unless it is for Curry).

The post was about a potential plan B, that would be to use the expiring contracts to get good players, with bad contracts, that would help our young studs to blossom, and also to get additionnal draft picks.

So yes I’m willing to take Calderon, who is a good PG, and I’m willing to take Jaric, Gadzuric or Posey if a pick is included in the deal.

The go-to guys would be Gallo, Chandler, this year’s pick or even lil’ Nate. I’m not ready to give up on Robinson yet.

What would be your plan B Chris ??

I would much rather see them tank.

The Knicks will have to stay under the salary cap until they sign/trade for a superstar. Why dump Randolph if you sign Jamison one year later? Zach is better than Jamison!

You guys think Caron Butler is available this offseason?

Comment by Mucha
2009-05-17 12:18:01

Maybe.

Anyways he’ll be 30 years old next year, he’s a good player but he’s not the flat-out stud we’re looking for – and he’s a 3.

Caron played the 2 in collge and sometimes he played the 3 in the NBA.

I wouldn’t give him a penny. He’s 30 years old and his team ended the season with the worst record in the Eastern Conference. And he had Antawn Jamison. I mean, I like Caron Butler, I really do, but he’s not young/good enough to sacrifice the whole plan.

The only 30 years old player I would make a move for is Kobe Bryant. That’s it.

if the clippers land the second pick… does anyone think that they would be inclined to trade it assuming blake is gone and they already have their pg for the next four years who is completely untradable… do you think they would try to use the pick to unload some of their big contracts??? also, if your the knicks would you take on a big contract to land rubio…. i would.

No To Swift. Yes to Wilcox on the cheap for depth

No to Birdman. NY will turn him into a drug addict . He wont handle to city well

Yes to Artest and if thats not poss , yes to Odom.

oh…and for those talking butler and pick swapping ect…..

Wizards are pretty much way over the cap with Jamison and Arenas. Caron and Stevenson expire in 2011

They are not going to draft Rubio and probably would love to have more cap space instead of Rubio backing up Agent Zero

Hughes ,#8 for #2

Hughes & Mobley ,Nate ( S&T) & #8 for #2 & Caron Butler

We have 5 expiring so take your pick
