Root for the Jelly Beans!!

by Tommy Dee on May 18th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Interesting choice to use jelly beans, no truth to the rumor that Ronald Reagan was the auditor.  (finger point to Gym Rat slumdogballer for the alley…)

Basically, if any team shows up at 8, the Knicks have jumped into the top 3.

Anyway, just for fun here’s TKB’s mock jelly bean draft.

1) Memphis- Blake Griffin- Maybe they want a PG who can score, although I’m not sold on that notion, but they aren’t taking Ricky Rubio. They take Griffin or trade down.

2) Sacramento- Ricky Rubio. Then they have to figure what to do with Beno Udrih.

3) Your Knicks- Stephen Curry. I really think the Knicks may look to move down to a team that loves James Harden and tries to acquire that elusive 2010 pick then grab Curry. But I think they really want him and would take him at 3. It may be a reach, hence looking to deal, but Curry is moving up the boards.  The third spot is not a sexy spot, but Oklahoma has some chips to deal with 3 picks this year and Phoenix’s unprotected next year. Maybe the Knicks try to trade to 6 along with another piece in order to grab one of those picks. But would  Oklahoma trade up for Harden or Jordan Hill? Does Donnie Walsh take Jrue Holiday? Remember, he loved Westbrook last year. Again, as hoopsworld is reporting, Curry and Holiday are shooting up the board and may jump into the top 5.

How about the Kings? What would it take to move up one spot?.

Seems the Knicks have some serious decisions if the jelly beans prove prophetic.

4) Wizards- Jordan Hill- They are loaded with guards, and Hill gives them size up front (edit).

5)Clippers- James Harden- They may look to try and move Baron Davis, maybe to Houston for Tracy McGrady, a deal that was very hot and heavy at the trade deadline.

6) Thunder- Hasheem Thabeet. Great youth on this roster along with flexibility, they can add a few veterans and allow Thabeet to develop.

7) Minnesota- Brandon Jennings. Telfair is not the answer, but he can be for the meantime as Jennings develops.

8 Golden State- Tyreke Evans. Seems perfect for Nellie ball.

9) Raptors- James Johnson. Insurance policy at the 4 if Bosh bounces or is traded.

10) Bucks- Jrue Holiday- Holiday fits the Buck’s need for backcourt help.

11) Nets- Gerald Henderson- Perfect athletic option to pair with Vince Carter and Devin Harris.

12) Bobcats-Earl Clark. I’m thinking DeJuan Blair could be an option but Clark is too talented to pass on.

13) Pacers- Ty LawsonPoint guard help. Could see Maynor here.

14) Suns- Eric Maynor- The Suns are in transition, meaning they need a guard who can get out with some slow down capabilities.

IMO, I kinda agree with that mock lottery. In one mock I did, I had Flynn going to the Pacers. For some reason, I can see him being that energy floor leader to serve the ball over to Rush & Granger. I’m not the biggest fan of Flynn although I would not be surprised to see someone take him over a Maynor or even Lawson.

  • Cheech

I think you may have forgotten Jordan Hill. I could see him going to the wizards considering the fact that they have a loaded backcourt.
I agree with the curry pick if we cant move up to get rubio or down and still get currry later…what about giving Nate and our pick to the Kings for thier pick and Spencer Hawes? Just a thought. I see Hawes as a younger Big Z…

  • Funk

If the knicks land the #3, I would make a deal with the Thunder for them to move up and grab Thabeet, and for us to unload jeffries while bringing in maybe earl watson’s contract? Or nabbing a 2010 draft pick. Then with the #6 pick I would take Brandon Jennings if still available, or everybody’s beloved Steph Curry. That would be ideal in unloading a bad contract, taking on an expiring contract, and having our PG of the future (or a 2k10 first rounder) =) I am verrrrryyyyy excited for tomorrow!

  • Funk

can’t trade Nate or avi Lee until I believe June 1st..

^ props to I believe it was mucha for leaving the “D” out of David Lee. If it wasn’t mucha, I apologize to whoever it is.

    edited.

Funny I have Hill 3rd on my big board. The knicks moving up threw me off.

    Great catch and thanks!!

With the 10th pick in the 2009 nba draft, the New York Knicks select Goran Suton from Michigan State University…

    Oh God.

  • Mucha

    Right now I have :

    1. Sacramento – Blake Griffin
    2. Washington – James Harden
    3. Los Angeles – Ricky Rubio
    4. Oklahoma City – Hasheem Thabeet
    5. Minnesota – DeMar DeRozan
    6. Memphis – Jordan Hill
    7. Golden State – Tyreke Evans
    8. New York – Stephen Curry
    9. Toronto – Brandon Jennings
    10. Milwaukee – Earl Clark/ Jrue Holiday
    11. New Jersey – Earl Clark/James Johnson
    12. Charlotte – Gerald Henderson
    13. Indiana – Ty Lawson
    14. Phoenix Suns – Johnny Flynn

Maybe some teams will trade up or trade down to get the players they want but if the slots don’t move (they will) these are the players they would pick in my opinion.

No problem Tommy. I read your post earlier about Brandon Jennings playing with older men, and how you did the same when you were like 12 and how you thought it really helped you. And i couldnt agree more. I also played with men who were in there 30s when i was 12-16 and it really helped me learn the nuances of the game, little things, like calling out picks and talking on defense, and pick and rolls and all that little stuff. Im only 19 so it wasnt too long ago for me. But my point is, I have never really warmed up to Jennings, but after that point by you, and hearing that hes maturing, im seeing him in a slightly different light. Still want rubio or curry! Great Blog Tommy Dee, good luck to all knicks fans tommorow night!

    thanks cheech…

Its kinda weird, ever since the end of our season, I kind of just had a weird gut feeling that we’d get the number 3 pick. And now I watch this and I feel kind of psychic, lol, but I hope we do get higher than 3 if we do win.

And i think if we had 3, we would trade anywhere between 8-11 and get a pick for next year despite the fact that Harden is gonna be a stud in this league.

And am I the only thats a bit mad that they made us pink? lol

  • Mucha

That was a legitimate decision, the Knicks are softer than Marshmallows.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

    Maybe they are bad tippers…

  • paulempson

Clipps wont pick Rubio when they just signed B Diddy for 5 years

They will use that pick and try to unload Kaman and move down a bit . NOthing offer to move up

  • Mucha

    Haha yeah.

Since we’re talking about tipping, David Lee had a pretty good tip-in a few years ago though… But he’s still a Marshmellow.

  • Mucha

Of course they will. They’d then trade Baron Davis for Corey Maggette in my opinion.

  • KBT1615

I dont want 3 like someone said its too complicated. I mean you would have really good scouts toi get the best value at 3 in this draft. either 1,2, or 8 for me. And my board is
    Blake
    Ricky
    Tyreke
    Brandon Jennings
    Steph Curry

  • bob knick slave

every year there is always one player to mysteriously fall from predicted early pick to the late teens or early twenties.i have a feeling that this year its going to be THABEET

  • BiggieSmalls

I hate to say but these OKIES got it a little wrong.

After each lottery selection they put the ping pong ball they chose BACK IN so the odds are the same. If the #1 team is picked then they put it back and repick until they get another unique #2

All that said.. Its amazing these guys dedicated 15 minutes of News air time to this. Fascinating though

  • CircleLimit4

I don’t know if Thabeet will fall that far, especially in a weak draft for bigs and centers in particular. But I can see him slipping past the first 10.

If we get the 8th pick or worse, would anyone here take a chance on Thabeet if he fell to us? I would strongly consider it if Curry, Evans, Harden and Jennings are gone. I think Thabeet will be a decent player, it just might take a few seasons.

As a UConn fanatic, I’ve been watching Thabeet all last season. Defensively he can be something really special. Doesn’t quite have the motor Dikembe had but he’s just as explosive defensively, if not more. His help defense is great too. Perhaps what’s overlooked is how he alters shots with is freakish combination of size and length, the kind of thing that doesn’t come up on stat sheets.

Offensively, Thabeet will probably be a bust, as much as it pains me to say as a Husky fanboy. Even still, there is one area on the offensive side where Thabeet looks like a natural; putbacks. When he goes to the rim, he goes hard. And I mean HARD, even by NBA standards.

A lot of people think Thabeet is overrated, and I’ve been one of those people since the end of the 07-08 season when there were whispers of Thabeet declaring. He didn’t progress as much as people hoped, myself included. But this backlash could turn Thabeet into a quasi-sleeper. You know, like how hipsters loved Arcade Fire until they got kinda big and then they weren’t that cool anymore.

  • CircleLimit4

You think the Wiz will pass on Rubio considering Arenas’ injury history? They do need a 2 guard badly, but I’m not sure they’d give up someone as hyped at Rubio. I think they’d try to trade one of their stockpiled PFs (Jamison?) for a SG.

  • CircleLimit4

“4) Wizards- Jordan Hill- They are loaded with guards, and Hill gives them size up front (edit).”

I gotta disagree with this Tommy. If anything, the Wiz are loaded with PFs. Jamison and Songaila aren’t expiring anytime soon and they have a promising (at least somewhat) youth movement with Blatche, Pecherov and Dominic McGuire. They have plenty of centers (Etan won’t exercise his ETO) so they probably wouldn’t move Songaila or Blatche to the 5 spot.

Here’s my list with that draft seeding:

    1) Mem – Griffin
    2) Sac – Rubio
    3) Knicks – Harden/trade down for Curry
    4) Wash – Evans
    5) LAC – Hill
    6) OKC – Thabeet
    7) Minn – Jennings
    8) GS – Curry
    9) Tor – Clarke/Blair
    10) Mil – DeRozan/Henderson
    11) NJ – Blaire/Clarke
    12) Char – Henderson/Derozan
    13) Ind – Lawson/Jrue/Flynn/Maynor
    14) Pho – Lawson/Jrue/Flynn/Maynor

  • Mucha

Maybe you did not understand my logic, it’s all good. I think the Wizards – in that scenario – would draft Rubio or Thabeet and trade down for James Harden (a SG). That’s why I mentionned his name.
