Camby to be Dealt?

by Tommy Dee on May 25th, 2009 at 10:15 am

As you guys know, it’s the first thought that I had when the Clipps landed the first overall pick. Now Mike McGraw of the Daily Herald shares the same sentiments.

“…The Clips have already announced plans to draft 6-foot-10 Oklahoma power forward Blake Griffin with the top pick, which will give them an abundance of big men. Kaman wouldn’t be a bad target for the Bulls, who could use better interior defense. But unless the Clippers are desperate to shed salary, trading (Chris) Kaman doesn’t make much sense.

Marcus Camby, 35, has one year left on his contract and may be a candidate for retirement when this season ends. His expiring deal should have value at the trade deadline. Kaman is 27 and signed for three more years…”

Should Camby return to NY, I’m sure he can be enticed to stick around a few more years.

However, draftexpress is reporting that the Clipps are, in fact, shopping the first pick.

From Watching Marcus Play he still has in him about 3 more seasons.
    I want him back…..like now.

  • cragganmor

Agree, he still has a lot of basketball in him. The people that say he’s brittle are basing that on his track record early in his career in TOR and NYC.

He had issues with his ankle this year, but so did a ton of other people.

He”ll be healthy enough to start 75 games for us.

  • cragganmor

Forgot to add that getting Camby is great for building a competitive team right now, allows us the luxury of signing or drafting a project like Sene, Alade Aminu, etc., let them develop and learn under an old pro like Camby.

  • BiggieSmalls

    agree on targetting Camby.

It also allows Eddy Curry to moderate his minutes, have a competitive practice opponent and role model.

Camby allows us to get 20-25 good minutes out of Eddy and raise his confidence and value.

  • KBT1615

Yea I liked Sene the only time he got in he blocked a shot.

  • Chris Alvino

Camby is a 30 mpg guy. Curry can have the rest. I almost forget about Curry.

  • Magik_Trick

I like the thought of it, but really, what do we have to offer?

  • J-Knick

One of our expiring I guess … Harrington’s or Mobley’s if it’s tradeable (though there might be better use for Mobley’s contract). Richardson’s would save the Clippers “a few” bucks but they’d rather take Harrington

I wouldn’t offer more than that.

  • Chris Alvino

I’m not sure what would be better use of Mobley’s contract, unless DW tries to get a long-term contract.

  • KBT1615

Tommy Dee can we get an excerpt on the interior defense that we need. I mean with it we make the playoffs easy this year. Everyone keeps shooting down all of the great shot blockers out there like Tyson Chandler, Samuel Dalembert, I have even seen someone shoot down Camby.

Mobley’s Contract should be used to offload curry or jeffries….the latter is prolly the a bigger possibility

no disrespect to whoever said it but no way does camby have 3 seasons left in him, I can easily see him retiring after next season, especially if we sign him our system would run this guy tired, camby would be nice but also risky in a way

Tbh I like the idea of rather signing gortat

  • BiggieSmalls

watch the Outside the Lines video on ESPN.com about the Mobley situation.

I dont think his contract is tradeable

There is no chance of Mobley coming back which is one of the stipulations in trading a player who has retired. And after OTL slammed the NBA on teh Mobley medical situation I doubt they will approve the trade.

On top of that the piece says the Knicks will be filing to have his salary removed from their cap and get the cap relief that would afford.

  • joetheknick

Camby would be a great addition. Also getting an in shape Eddy Curry on the court would facilitate a trade of Curry.

  • paulempson

That just blew me away. How on earth can his contract NOT be tradable after they didn’t even give NY the med exception? I haven’t seen the ESPN piece but right off the bat , that makes no sense at all. He’s on the books for 9.3 mil and counting against our cap but we cant trade him? I dont think thats right

Also… we have a few trade exceptions stock piled.

    Rose / $897,500
    Balkman / 1.3 mil
    Roberson / 797,581
    Collins / 1 mil

Donnie has options when you look at the big pictures

    5 expirings
    trade exceptions
    #8 pick

I really dont see Clipps trading Camby before the deadline and to a champ hungry team that might give them players or picks. I think they will try and move Z or Kaman. It makes more cap sense for them

  • J-Knick

I was thinking more of getting rid of a “long”-term contract, as Jeffries’. Or “buying” a pick.

It would be hard to swallow Mobley’s contract being not tradeable given we were refused the exception !
