Wade: Lebron and I Want Flexibility

by Tommy Dee on May 26th, 2009 at 8:45 am

Dwayne Wade, as told to the Sun Sentinel, admits that he is considering both sides of the equation when it comes to his contract extension, one that the Heat are desperate to see him sign this summer.

“…Just like I’ve said from the beginning, it’s something I will sit down and talk to with my agent. Of course, we’ve got until July before there can really be serious talk about it,” Wade said. “We’ll see what’s best for both sides. I’m not ruling it out, but I’m not saying that I would do it either.”

Wade said there could be some benefits to re-signing with the Heat soon.

“There are advantages. I think one of the biggest advantages is making a commitment to the organization that you want to call your organization and have other players say, ‘Well, Dwyane is there,’ and they might want to be a part,” Wade said. “But, at the same time, I signed the contract for a reason, to have flexibility. You want to use that flexibility, as a player.”

Finally, Wade discussed the fact that LeBron James could also be a free-agent in 2010.

“Of course me and LeBron talked about it. We both signed this deal together. But we didn’t sign the deal saying that we were going to play together. We just signed the deal giving ourselves flexibility,” Wade said.

And in the end, I believe, that flexibility is going to keep both from putting their names on the dotted line this summer.

Yea… no way either signs an extension this summer; it just doesn’t make sense.

Damn, could you imagine if Wade and LeBron actually played together? I think that fantasy lost all steam like one week after the Olympics, but imagine that. The amount of steals and blocks and fast break points would be amazing. I don’t think there is a player in the league who is as explosive as either Wade or Bron.

    CURRY GO HOME!

  • Magik_Trick

That has to be a Knicks fan dream, but i’ll definetly settle for only one.

To bad its gonna be impossible to unload Curry and Jeffries contracts

  • Grandmama

seriously, can’t the knicks work out an agreement with Curry whereby he agrees to just retire (his salary comes off the cap) but the Knicks still give him his money under the table??? I would do this in a second!!!!!

  • BiggieSmalls

No. Even if he retires his contract stays on the books until it expires.

After a year the Knicks can petition to get luxury tax relief for retired player contracts. This is what DW will be doing soon with Cutino Mobley.

And once a player retires he can not be traded unless their is a reasonable chance of them returning to the court.

This is why Mobley is a dead issue. After the ESPN Outside the Lines piece he aint coming back.

Correct me if im wrong but Curry could opt out however. He’s got a player option for the ’10/11 season

  • BiggieSmalls

he has a player option for this year and next. He can opt out this year, lose 22 mil guaranteed and become an unrestricted free agent

And .. we can not agree on the side with him to opt out then sign him to a one year 22 million dollar contract

  • Magik_Trick

Yeah, Currys under ETO, he could opt this summer if he chooses, but we all know its not gonna happen.

+It would be the greatest thing to happen to this franchise if he did decide to opt out o_O

think about it from Curry’s standpoint…

you find me one person in the entire world who would opt out of $22 million guaranteed, only to find yourself with no team willing to sign you because your considered fat and useless. The most he would get if he opted out would be a league minimum contract, or a $2-3 mill a year contract.

$22 million > any contract he will sign if he opts out

If your not going to get playing time, wouldn’t you prefer to get paid $22 million instead of $3million max+ helping out a team that doesn’t want you to begin with??

Here some comment from a chat with Chad Ford of espn:

Nick (NJ): I hope the Knicks do not select steph curry. Regardless of the system, hes an undersized 2 who wont be able to defend anyone or create his own shot. hes got a quick release but i dont think hes worthy of the 8 pick in an average draft year. (and this is well below average). What are the chances the Knicks take Jonny Flynn? Some guys just know how to play in the garden and thats half the battle. And this kid can do it.

Chad Ford: (1:31 PM ET ) I like Jonny Flynn and he could be a good player for the Knicks, but I think you’re wrong about Curry. I got to see him workout today and I think he’s bigger and better than you think he is. He’ll figure out how to run the point and when he does, I think he can be special. His jump shot is a thing of beauty and he’s so clever with the ball. I still think Steve Nash isn’t a crazy comparison.

Mike D’Antoni (NY, NY): How in the world can I convince Chris Wallace to send us the number 2 pick? Will Lee and the #8 for #2 and Darko work? Or do I have to blackmail him?

Chad Ford: (1:19 PM ET ) The problem is that Lee is a restricted free agent. They can’t trade him until after July 1st and then only via a sign-and-trade that Lee would have to agree to. I know the Knicks have interest in Darko and certainly in Rubio, but if it goes that down that way, it will take a few weeks to sort out.

hey everyone, draftexpress.com finally moved DeRozan down to 9 and has us taking Curry; they were the last ones to give in… It’s happening.

    Im happy about it.
