Henderson on the Radar- Lawson a “Long shot?”

by Tommy Dee on May 30th, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Marc Berman notes that the Knicks will work out the guards on their radar on June 9th. He claims that Ty Lawson is a “long shot.”

“…Mark June 9 on the calendar. That’s when the Knicks will host their point-guard battle royale that could determine which player they will select.

Holiday will go against Curry, and point guards Johnny Flynn of Syracuse and UNC’s Ty Lawson, who measured 5-foot-11 at the combine and is considered a Knicks longshot.

“Why not play against the best players?” Holiday said.

Flynn of Syracuse is also champing at he bit.

“It’s definitely a great group,” Flynn said. “This year’s draft class for point guard is so deep, top to bottom. I like seeing how I’ll add up. I can’ t wait to get after them.”

Holiday is by far the biggest of the point guard group. After playing 5-foot-7½ Nate Robinson the past few years, that might be attractive.

“I definitely think it’s an advantage,” Holiday said. “I’m a big point guard, I can post up little guards. I can rebound and I can see the rim. On defense they have to get by me. I have a long wingspan. It’s definitely harder to see over me.”

Mike D’Antoni sees the upside in Holiday.

“He was smooth and uses some of his point guard skills,” D’Antoni said. “We’ll get a better handle when he comes to New York. He shoots nicely and looked real fast, like he had another gear he can go to…”

Seems to me, as it has been since January, that Holiday has everything the Knicks are looking for and, as we’ve said, Donnie Walsh has a tough choice if he is there along with Curry at 8. I want Holiday.

Oh, and Berman also said a certain Duke guard familiar with D’Antoni’s system is now on their radar. Can’t say we’re surprised.

“…Though Curry still is the favorite, Holiday, DeRozan, Flynn and even Duke shooting guard Gerald Henderson, who emerged in Chicago onto the Knicks’ radar, are still in the mix…”

So Our Board Is Looking like
    Thabeet
    B Jennings
    Ty Evans
    Curry
    Holiday
    Derozan
    Henderson
    Flynn

I would be happy with any especially Ty Evans with his freakish Wingspan, Holiday, B Jennings and Thabeet, when is the last time we had a defensive minded center.

  • slambam

curry and holiday HAVE to be ahead of brandon jennings. while jennings may become a star, i would MUCH rather have curry or holiday

  • Jeff Cykiert

Thabeet is at the bottom of that list…

If we draft curry we will have drafted, far and away, the best shooter in 2 consecutive drafts, both players also having very high IQ and court vision, one of them being a 6’11 mismatch nightmare (see: Orlando Magic)

    I like…. I like alot…

Stick crazy athlete, defensive beast, Chandler in between (who’s shot ain’t so bad), and i can’t imagine a better opening for a star to come in and take over.

Whats Galo’s official height, by the way? Can i keep saying 6-11?

I shadily think D-Wade might be coming here.

    Curry/Nash
    Wade/Hughes
    Chandler
    Galo
    Amare/Lee

I’ll take S Curry 10 times outta 10 for THIS team what was Duhon prob last yr? no in between game suspect 3 pt shot Curry can hit it from anywhere hes a Shooting PG not a SG E. Maynor is up there 2 he has a mid range game.

  • KBT1615

I got it listed by value. And due to the lack of centers period Thabeet is a top 5 value.

  • BiggieSmalls

    No Ricky?

  • KBT1615

Only chance we have at ricky is if we trade up for him this our board of possible players there at 8.

  • BiggieSmalls

    i hear he is sliding

  • Bart

    From????

  • CircleLimit4

I’m not sure where we could go wrong with any of these guys really. While there are some question marks and it’s still possible to make the wrong pick, the hindsight happy “I-told-you-so” factor will me minimal. Once you get past Griffin and Rubio, it’s a veritable coin flip.

  • paulempson

Holiday sounds like the best fit. He and Rubio have a lot of teh same qualities except Jrue can shoot and is taller while Rubio is the better passer *( for now)

I think there isnt alot of chat on Rubio because no one knows whats going on in his head . No work outs…., no news other than a little here and there….

I say Jrue will be gone by 8

Forget Thabeet. Michael sweetney anyone ?? Remember that bust

Curry is not the guard for us IF we want to win next year

  • Mucha

I like : Tyreke Evans, Jrue Holiday, Ricky Rubio, Stephen Curry, James Harden, Demar DeRozan and maybe Johnny Flynn.

I would stay away from (busts in my opinion) : Brandon Jennings, Hasheem Thabeet, Ty Lawson, Gerald Henderson (sorry Tommy – I just don’t see it) and Terrence Williams.

  • KBT1615

How is Jennings a Bust and I thought we already established Thabeet would be a offensive bust. Just put it this way if there were better centers in this draft he would go in the Middle of the first round.

  • Bart

Jrue is gone by 8 Rubio is gone by 8 so I guess were gonna lose next yr.

  • dino2008

IMO it is very possible that both Holiday and Stephen Curry will be gone by number 8. Curry is perfect for Don Nelson and I have a feeling the warriors might take curry at 7. If we are not able to trade up for the number 2 pick and if Curry and Holiday are both gone, which is very possible, then what do we do????

  • Funk

if Rubio and Curry are both gone, we take Jennings with no hesitation. I am not sold on Holiday. I feel he is getting too much hype. I just don’t see him coming in right away and producing, which is what we need. If Jennings is gone as well, Jonny Flynn is our guy.

  • paulempson

Its a crap shoot guys on every player. Here’s my wish list

    Rubio
    Holiday
    Tyreke
    Demar D
    Curry
    Jennings

    Thats 6 players…..

It will be very interesting on draft night

  • bob knick slave

    what about eric maynor?

  • Bart

I think Holiday is gonna be a bust hes not a game changer on our team he doesn’t bring a diff skill set than Duhon. Even Jennings is a game changer he has speed and athleticism on the fastbreak, Curry can drop 30 on a given night nuff said.

  • KBT1615

I like Holiday a lot but as everyone has said he is going to be a project and he has a bunch of hype and we have seen what hype to a project can do.
But I think everyone even Donnie and Mike is on the same page that if Brandon Jennings is there at 8 he will be wearing a knicks uni come October.

  • smoke

Give me Rubio at the 1 through trading D Lee, Raja Bell at the 2 trading Nate, Gallo at the 3, Amare at the 4 through harrington chandler and swapping 8 with 14, and Camby wholesale because the clippers are loaded up front. Have E. Maynor coming off the bench how lucky would that be.

  • paulempson

NO Chance on Camby deal. They will want to shed salary while staying competitive so they too can be players in 2010. LA is a big market

I think we need to keep Lee unless an offer we cant refuse comes in

A lot of PG’s 2-8 pick so its an interesting position as to who picks who but Rubio ‘s camp will need to talk soon on what his feelings are . Where he will accept to play and where he wont.

6 Million € = 8.5 mil USD. Thats more than Lee will get more than likely. So…… its not a given that Rubio stays in this draft unless he gets what he wants

  • Mucha

I agree but considering the fact that he’ll be a top 10 pick – Thabeet’ll be a bust.

Jennings will be a bust as well in my opinion, maybe I’m wrong. I know that he wasn’t in a great situation but he hasn’t been able to step up, I mean look at his stats (Italian league) :

27 games, 17 minutes per game.

    35% FG, 20% 3FG, 64% FT,

    5.5 PPG, 1.6 RPG, 2.2 APG & 2.1 Turnovers per game.

Turrible, like Chuck says, this isTURRIBLE. I mean Gallinari shined in the same league.
