Chandler to Have Ankle Surgery?

by Chris Alvino on June 2nd, 2009 at 11:19 am

Marc Berman is reporting that Wilson Chandler is considering ankle surgery to repair a bone spur. Chandler played in all 82 games and averaged 33.4 mpg. Chandler is likely to skip the summer league this year. No date has been set for the procedure.

Berman is also reporting that Gallo is most likely going to skip the summer league.

As far as Chandler goes, it is good to fix whatever problems he might have now instead of waiting until the season starts. Wilson, take care of your business and be strong heading into September.

As for Gallo, just get healthy and get into shape. Be ready for training camp. This team and this fan base expect a lot from you this coming season.

Yeah I didn’t expect any comments. Nothing really to say. Just get healthy and come back and play. Haha.

Actually, something that i’ve wondered about but never really seen addressed is the competency (or lackthereof) of the Knicks medical/training staff.

Am I the only one thinking that surely there has to be a better staff out there that the Knicks could hire?

It just seems that since Isiah Thomas came on board and removed some of the mainstay medical/physical staff members (e.g. Brendan Malone, Mike Saunders, etc.). It just doesn’t seem to me that the Knicks staff is doing as good a job as they could/should be doing. Are other medical staffs better?

For example, the Knicks dealt with a myriad of injuries that might have been prevented or treated properly had they been handled by a competent staff (in my opinion).

    Just a sample:
Eddy Curry – was allowed to get fat and destroy his knees.
    Stephon – bone spurs.
    Lee – bone spurs.
    Duhon – bad back.
    Penny – bone spurs.
Gallo – bad back, possibly caused by poor weight training supervision/guiance.
Chandler – bone spurs – some say the staff knew about this is February/Arpil….why wait until now for surgery?
    Jerome James (knees). etc. etc.
Crawford – injury was not diagnosed until 2 months after he got it

Apparently, i’m not the only one who thinks that perhaps the team that Isiah put in place (and they’re still on-board – Roger Hinds -) is not competent enough to get the job done and may be hurting our players with late diagnosis, misdiagnosis and general incompetency.

    FROM Berman’s blog:
    From one of Berman’s blogs:

“Isiah Thomas made a lot of strange moves you know about, but he also made some you don’t. Longtime former Knicks trainer Mike Saunders was in the Garden tonight for the first time since Thomas relieved him after Thomas’ first year. Saunders always kept the players loose with his jokes, was around for the glory days and there was no good reason to fire him. The club has missed his big personality. Roger Hinds, so low key as to be invisible, replaced Saunders. Saunders is now running his own physical therapy company in Pomona up in Rockland County.”

What do you guys think? Should Chandler have gotten surgery earlier if the Docs knew about it back in February? Do you think that the training staff was a cause to Gallinari’s back injury (later exacerbated by tractor Traylor)?

Correction****Brendan Malone was an assistant coach and not part of the medical staff. Sorry about that.

    Nice comment.

I am not well-versed enough in the NBA medical staffs to give a legit answer or response to your questions. The Curry and Gallo situations were bad.

You’re right. The Knicks have had a plethora of injuries in recent memory.

    This is major league bummer.

He was working already really hard this spring in order to come back a better outside shooter, ball handler, slasher, and finisher around the basket. This is going to cause a delay in his development that goes beyond just the 6 weeks he’ll miss. You don’t get to work on stuff like this during the season as much.

Also, I should point out that he commented on twitter recently about having to do some extra work because of his “knee” – meaning that he still has problems in that area also.
