Gilbert Has Serious Reason to Worry

“…Gilbert was unsurprisingly asked about the future of LeBron James in Cleveland and asked to comment about the situation for nervous fans.

“You think you’re nervous,” replied Gilbert jokingly.

But then he turned serious and said, “We feel very confident that this franchise and the direction we’re going, the things we’re doing, will make it the best place to play basketball for our current players, LeBron James, future players or anybody else. That’s all we can do — try to create the best environment, the best culture, create a team that has the best chances of ultimately winning an NBA championship — or more.

“We’re doing that. I feel very, very good about that.”

He declined to say whether he expected James to sign an extension this summer…”

Seriously, can someone come up with a deal that Danny Ferry can make to bring a star player in there this summer? Feel free to drop them in below.

Are they going to wait until next year to bring in that 1A player and if so, who would that be? You think a player is going to sign in Cleveland, or at least wish to be traded, if they are unsure of Lebron’s future? They need to win in 2010. Period.

Anyone realize this may be a major factor when the best they almost came up with in terms of making a big deal  was Shaq?

Ferry has to make a huge move this summer and he has limited assets other than a few expirings. But he has a bad pick and I’d doubt there are any teams in the East looking to help the Cavs win.

In other words, someone get Mr. Gilbert a cocktail.

Ben Wallace is a 14 million dollar expiring deal and he has indicated he would be willing to accept a buyout and retire.

Alvino had it the other day.. Clips send Z bo to the Cavs for Big Ben’s expiring deal.

I agree, the Cav’s are in trouble. They are old and slow. They got guys like Wally Szerbiack and Joe Smith coming off the books this year. Ben Wallace may retire. Illgauskas has an early termination but he’s not going to exercise it. Anderson Varaejo has an early termination and he already said he’s going to do it.
So who can the Cavs really sign? Artest – doubt it, he looks happy in Houston. Jason Kidd? Doubt it…he may not win a title in Dallas but he saw that this Cleveland team doesnt have solid pieces to win it. Plus he’s comfortable in Dallas.
Cleveland certainly does not have any trading chips. Sure Mo Williams had a nice regular season but he disappeared in the playoffs especially against Orlando after looking ridiculous proclaiming they’d beat Orlando. Delonte West is ok but your not going to get a star player for him.

I think Cleveland is screwed. Why would a Star player sign long term with Cleveland without King James signed long term? That Star player is stuck if King James leaves in a year. So I don’t expect them to make major changes. And they are not winning next year either. King James does not the supporting cast. I like Mo Williams but he’s no Scottie Pippen.

Come in 2010, we have to hope a supporting cast of 09 Pick (Stephen Curry), Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Nate Robinson and Chris Bosh/Amare Stoudemire is enough to woo the King.

Person to blame is Danny Ferry. He did a bad job putting together a team that should’ve had the right mix of young and veteran talent. There seems to be more aging talent than anything on that team.

  • BiggieSmalls

Ferry’s big mistake was NOT dealing Wally Szczerbiak at the dealline when tehre were numerous teams looking to get his expiring deal.

The Cavs could have gotten a legitimate player like Richard Jefferson or someone else — teams were that desperate.

hey as long lebron is suffering in cleveland that gives us a chance to improve our team this offseason because the only way we could truly get these free agents in 2010 (not just james, wade, or bosh, but nowitzki, manu, and/or amare) is by creating a playoff team this year, it doesnt have to be a big home court advantage dominating team, just good enough so we wont have to feel bad about not having a 2010 draft pick (6-8 seed would be perfect). If you truly look at the cavs roster without james that team would struggle to win 30 games, and if we prove to be a playoff quality team without the free agents imagine how good this team would be when they arrive??

if this doesnt sound like a good idea then please feel free to discuss

  • bob knick slave

hey sergio, stop naming players who you WISH were on the KNICKS,stephen curry ,bosh or stoudemire is not on the KNICKS and NATE will not be here.that leaves gallo and chandler,i dont think thats much of a lure

That makes me think that Lebron’s overdominance in the Cavs’ offense scheme has limited the devlopment of some teammates. I mean, there is a good mix of veterans and youngsters in this team.

Point is, they rely so much on James that Varejao, Gibson, West or Pavolvic are not able to take the next step.

So to be fair, some of the blame can be put on Mike Brown.

  • Jeff Cykiert

Shaq being the ‘best they can come up with’ isn’t so bad in my book. If i recall correctly, the reason the cavs couldn’t play the Magic was because they had no real big man who could guard howard 1-on-1, which opened up the magic’s perimeter game.

Shaq is pretty much the second most dominant (power wise) big man in the league, and one of the only ones who can face up with howard.

If there’s one realistic scenario i can imagine that gives the cavs the chance to win next year, its shaq.

The problem with that is that it would only be a temporary solution for next year, and maybe 2 more at most, which wouldn’t really help the cause of creating a good young team looking down the road.
