Jennings on Rubio: “I think the dude is all hype”

by Tommy Dee on June 12th, 2009 at 5:14 pm

In keeping with the Jennings theme, check out the Sac Bee’s video.

At the end of the first video Jennings was asked if Rubio was all hype after talking about the one time when he played him and apparently got the best of him. His answer, “yup.” Then he really goes off.

He also went on to say that if Rubio worked out with the likes of Jennings, Flynn, Ty Lawson, Stephen Curry and Jrue Holiday that we probably wouldn’t be “the top.”

Check it out.

Jennings just Tweeted back to someone knocking him for his Rubio comments. It’s easy to assume that “he” is Rubio.

“…so that means he’s better then me??? He’s not sorry, he’s a good player. I just wanna workout against everybody…”

Don’t Get Me Wrong Rubio is Good But I can see why Jennings would believe that. And Not hearing about a Rubio workout isn’t helping.

  • Magik_Trick

He seems like a future “locker room cancer”, but I like his honesty

And I SLIGHTLY agree with Jennings, Rubio IS overrated, he doesnt have a great shot, hes not super athletic and hes not explosive, but he does have a great basketball IQ, is an outstanding passer, and plays defense well

  • CircleLimit4

I think a lot of people are saying the same about Jennings so it looks like a case of pot/kettle/black. I guess we’ll see come October.

  • CircleLimit4

I see what you’re saying about Jennings. It sounds like he has a one-on-one attitude with comments like that, which is not what I want from my PG. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

  • Bart

Hes probably Currys biggest competition if Curry isn’t there i think he should be the pick.

  • Chris Alvino

I almost agree with him on Rubio. Some talk about Rubio as if he is the next best PG to come into the league. He might be based on what I saw in the Olympics, but I am not so sure.

If he is there at 8, Curry will be the pick. I think that is a lock.

  • Bart

How do you get that out of what he said hes not here to kiss Rubios championship rings.

  • CircleLimit4

Are you kidding? He’s obviously going out of his way to stir the pot. He sounds a little jealous and petty if you ask me. He recited the stats of that one game and wore it like a badge of honor.

He’s not there to comment on Rubio at all. Acting professional DOES NOT equal kissing Rubio’s rings.

  • Mucha

Ricky Rubio is clearly overhyped but Jennings’ statement was totally classless. Whatever, Donnie Walsh will have to draft Stephen Curry if he’s available.

  • Bart

Not everyone is gonna give you the same cliche answers he said what he honestly felt about the great Rubio. To me that doesn’t equate to being unprofessional its good to hear someone tell you there actual opinion. He was just telling them how he felt about the situation, he played him who better to know than a guy that went at him all game.

  • CircleLimit4

What world do you live in where not attacking someone amounts to being cliche?

  • CircleLimit4

He could have found a classier way out of those very leading questions, that’s all I’m saying.

  • Bart

You call that attacking someone ?? really that’s surprising hopefully Rubio has tougher skin, alot of answers in these interviews are same-ol same-ol, he could have said Ricky is a great player and not honestly felt that way you can’t knock him for being confident in his game and being honest. Here’s a guy that donated $50,000 to the earthquake relief in Italy hes a class act.

  • KBT1615

Bart I will back you up not only because I am one of the few Jennings believers around here but because this situation reminds me of Gary Sheffield.
Sheff speaks his mind about issues not giving the “politically correct” answers and people in turn think he is a locker room cancer, turns out his teammates love him and the Mets have only gotten better since getting him.
So In turn the possible Locker Room cancer remark shouldn’t be taken serious because you can speak your mind and still be loved by your teammates.

  • paulempson

listen to all the other stuff he said. very confident speaker but …….. I d say he is all hype.

Rubio has a ton of games . Sad he wont work out. Id love to see that

  • J-Knick

If R Rubio is overhyped, “Lebron texting buddy”-Future Great Player- Next Steve Nash- S Curry is SATELLITE-hyped !!!!

  • pedro

just like to remind everyone that when jennings played against rubio, rubio was coming back from a broken hand who wasn’t still fully healed.

  • Clancy3434

so if rubio, who got more playing time than jennings at a younger age in the same league is over hyped, does that mean that jennings just plain sucks?

i’m confused at his logic, which is not surprising actually.

  • Jeff Cykiert

Guys… none of you know that Ricky is over-hyped, or that Jennings is better than him. Let alone the fact that situational factors like coach, system, minutes are the biggest aspects of determining a PG’s success, but we simply just do not know. We have seen some crazy highlights of him, he held his own against our best in the olympics, and he played ball professionally since age 14. We know his IQ is ridiculous, and that’s it. Nobody knows that he is ‘over-hyped.’ Nobody knew that LeBron wasn’t ‘over-hyped’ until he had 25 points, 9 assists, and 5 rebounds in his first game.

We should just refrain from making assumptions about Rubio as if we know how good he is going to be.

  • KBT1615

Hold On Tommy How Come You Didn’t Just Post The Whole Quote.
“Yeah because he played in the Olympics, been playing pro ball since 14, you know there it is right there. His stats you know 26 minutes, having 16 points, seven assists, nine steals in 26 minutes, and you have all that? You know, I really don’t know, I can’t wait to play him though.”

Yeah He said Ricky is all hype but then he took it back and said He doesn’t know..
