Point Taken

Having taking a class or two on marketing and advertising, here’s what my marketing brain tells me: Stephen Curry, had he not been an outstanding basketball prospect, would have made a Fortune 500 executive. The kid has done a great job selling himself as a means to land in a Knicks uniform. With his jumper and apparent play making skills, he has made it clear that his game is perfect for Madison Square Garden.

Heck, he even has a membership at the MSG library where Mike D’Antoni’s book is on permanent loan. The kid has serious skills across the board that have the Knicks gushing about the possibility of drafting him with the eighth overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft.

But there is another talent that, according to those who have their ears pressed to the walls, seems to have caught the eyes of Knicks management. He’s Jrue Holiday, and, much like Curry, he fits a serious need for this team both now and moving forward.

Now I know Holiday seems to be the latest flavor or maybe the Knicks are leaking how much they like him so a team can jump ahead of them and draft him so that another player (ahem, Curry) can fall in their laps. Read more.

The team that drafts Jrue Holiday in the lottery is really going to regret it. Kid is simply not that good. Out of position or not (worst excuse ever btw), Holiday was a 8/5 role player on a UCLA team that desperately needed him to score and produce more. I agree Holiday is not a SG or a scorer. But he’s not this incredible playmaker and defender either. Holiday got burned a ton at UCLA. Yeah, he has the body and potential to get better but from what I’ve seen so far, he’s just not at the same level talent wise as Stephen Curry, Tyreke Evans or Johnny Flynn. Holiday isn’t even more skilled then Ty Lawson or Jeff Teague!

I just don’t like the idea of drafting a player who didn’t produce and it’s all based on potential and an assumption he’ll be something he’s not right now. Not every 6’4″ 200 PG is going to develop into Chauncey Billups or Derek Harper. Remember Mardy Collins? Remember Frank Williams?

If I had to bet, I’d say Holiday had a Chris Duhon type of career. You don’t take Duhon with the 8th pick in the Draft.
