Mills Mock Draft V3

By Myles A. Mills on Jun 17, 2009, 1:14 am

1 – Los Angeles Clippers - Blake Griffin

Who’s taking Zach Randolph’s contract?

2 – Memphis Grizzlies - Hasheem Thabeet

I think the Grizzlies favoring of Rubio has more to do with a fear that he wouldn’t like Memphis as opposed to actually looking at Thabeet as the better prospect.  Thabeet and Marc Gasol could fit nicely, and I know that they like Mike Conley, but Rubio is just the right pick.

3 – Oklahoma City Thunder - Ricky Rubio

I find it interesting that the Thunder are giving Curry a look at 3, when after the tournament people were questioning if he was a lottery pick.  That’s what happens when Al Farouq-Aminu, Willie Warren, Ed Davis, Cole Aldrich, and Greg Monroe opt to return to school.  Rubio will add to an already stellar young core in OKC, and in a few years they will contend in the West.

4 – Sacramento Kings - Jrue Holiday

If Holiday’s not taken here, he will probably drop to 8.  It seems as though the Kings would decide between Johnny Flynn, Brandon Jennings, and Jrue Holiday if Rubio is off the board.  Holiday had the best workout of the three so he gets the slight edge for now.

5 – Washington Wizards - James Harden

I think they trade the pick, but if they don’t, it’ll be James Harden.

6 – Minnesota Timberwolves - Stephen Curry

We would all love for Stephen Curry to drop to New York but at this point it seems unlikely.  Minnesota wants a point guard who can shoot, and Curry can definitely stroke it.

7 – Golden State Warriors - Brandon Jennings

I think it’s between Brandon Jennings and Johnny Flynn here, but I think Jennings gets the edge because of his upside.  I like Jennings talent and potential a lot, but his attitude worries me. His big ego could become a problem down the line, but there’s no question that his game is tailor made for Nellie’s system.

8 – New York Knicks – Jordan Hill

Hill’s stock has dropped, and TKB has been on top of that.  First, let me say that I fully endorse the idea of picking Jordan Hill at 8, and if he’s available I think the Knicks will do just that.  If Curry and Holiday are gone, why not go for the most talented prospect on the board?  I’m more confident in Jordan Hill having an impact on the next level than I am in Johnny Flynn doing so.  That’s what it comes down to.  Flynn is 5’11 and has way more questions surrounding his game than Hill does.  Hill’s stock has dropped in the same way that Brook Lopez fell down the draft boards last year and fell into the nets laps at 10.  We all know how that turned out.  Hill can run, and a big man who can run is intricate in D’Antoni’s system.  He has some similarities to Amare Stoudamire, and he not only can score on the low post, but he blocks shots.  Plus, he went from 5 to 13 to 18 points during his time at Arizona so he improves quickly.

9 – Toronto Raptors - Tyreke Evans

Evans will have a nice career, but I question his shot selection and ability to run the point.  He’s going to be a lot like Larry Hughes;  He thinks he has a jump shot, but he doesn’t.  There lies the shot selection issues.  But even if Evans can’t play the one, the Raptors have a vacancy at the shooting guard spot too.  I like Demar Derozan more for them here, but his stock has dropped.

10 – Milwaukee Bucks - Johnny Flynn
Ramon Sessions will probably leave, so Johnny Flynn is the perfect replacement.
11 – New Jersey Nets - Tyler Hansbrough
Reports have come out that the Nets are open to trading their pick along with Vince Carter, and I’m sure there would be several takers if that is the case.  Chad Ford insists that Tyler Hansbrough and Terrence Williams are the frontrunners in New Jersey if Jordan Hill doesn’t fall, and that is unlikely.  I love T-Will, but Tyler Hansbrough’s bust potential frightens me, and I would stay away if was Rod Thorn and Kiki Vandeweghe.
12 – Charlotte Bobcats - Gerald Henderson
Prototypical Larry Brown type of player.  Defense, hustle, and loads of offensive potential.
13 – Indiana Pacers – Demar Derozan
Derozan is a great prospect and he would fit in well with Jim O’Brien’s offense.  His jump shot needs work but he is a nightmare in the open court and has a high ceiling.
14 – Phoenix Suns - Earl Clark
Clark has a lot of upside.  He shoots and rebounds very well, and his versatility is a weapon.  His inconsistency has hindered his draft value, but he fits in Phoenix if they don’t trade the pick.  Eric Maynor is also a possibility here if the Suns aren’t necessarily confident that they can work out something with Steve Nash.

I Dont get it!.if everyone says that THABEET isnt really that good, then why does everyone have him going from 2-4 in the draft.after all the workouts and such,it seems to me there are at least 10 guys who are more talented than THABEET!if this guy doesnt fall to about 12,then there should be a G.M fired a day after the draft.ive seen nothing of this guy since FEB.that makes me think he should be drafted in the top 10.I DONT CARE HOW BIG HE IS ..if my team picked him with the 3rd pick,I’D BE PISSED AS HELL

Since Washington is probaly trading the 5th pick and want a player who can contribute right away, shouldn’t the knicks package lee and maybe curry for the pick and draft jordan hill and with the 8th pick they can take jennings/ flynn/ curry/ evans and piece hill and say jennings with wilson chandler and danilo and knicks can have a line up for 2010 of

    Jennings/Nash
Chandler/Danny Green (Knicks accquire a mid 2nd rd pick in 2009 draft)
    Lebron/Danilo
    Hill/
    Amare/

Thats a lineup that can win many rings

    Mills,

Johnny Flynn was measured at 6’1″ with sneakers so I don’t know where you’re getting 5’11″ from.

I still doubt Minnesota takes Stephen Curry when he refused to workout for them. Tyreke Evans is higher on their board anyway.

And Jrue Holiday did not have the best workout in Sacramento. Brandon Jennings and Johnny Flynn did better. Check your info. Mills.

I’m disappointed Myles. It looks like you just copy and pasted Chad Ford’s mock. You’re better than that!!

Ricky Rubio to OKC doesn’t make sense in my opinion – they already got Russell Westbrook. James Harden or Hasheem Thabeet will be available where they draft, I think they’ll pick either one of them.

The Grizzlies are an x factor and if I’m Chris Wallace I draft James Harden (OJ Mayo & James Harden, what a backcourt) and do everything to get a veteran power forward during the summer. Or I trade Hasheem Thabeet for Kevin Love, which is a steal in my opinion.

The Pacers have Danny Granger and Brandon Rush, why would they draft DeRozan? They need a young point guard or a big man.

Ok this is my take but lets see here, if curry and holliday are off the board, then we have that tough choice with either jordan hill or brandon jennings in my mind…and that only!!! if ther gone

I think Jennings is a headcase who really needs to learn to keep his mouth shut aka stephon marbury—we dont want that again do we?

The only reason I like BJ is his high light potential and he can be our future point bc he can run and gun and drive, then we buy a pick later and take maybe a guy like james johnson or bj mullens??

and my take on jordan hill is simple, he can be a great player with all the right tools, and he can flourish in run and gun system like MD, and he can rebound, which we need, then we can have our foward of the future and buy a late pick and select ty lawson or eric maynor.. i like them both, but i like lawon a bit more bc of his ready now Pg and he can flourish in running and gunning…

then use the second rounder on danny green( shot and defense)
or and jack mclinton, terrific scorer and tough to guard.

You know, I thought I was the only one that felt that way about Jennings. I do believe he’s a headcase ala Stephon Marbury as well. All that trash talking he did about Rubio was un-called for. Whats next, a Stephon Marbury type line saying he’s the best point guard when he plays next year? Jennings comments alone are probably going to make his stock drop in this draft.

exactly i mean i dont want a starbury clone, i mean starbury was good, but with his knucklehead problems, i hope Bj realizes that he better watch his mouth round reporters and yes his draft stock and dropped and thats why i belive he will drop to maybe 13 to the pacers at worst for him..

i still would love curry or rubio, maybe holliday at worst

    im pumped for the draft

Pacers may even pass on Jennings. They already got their own head-case with Jamaal Tinsley. I think if the Knicks end up with Jordan Hill, it is because they drafted him to trade with someone who has a higher pick. Jrue Holiday realistically is what the Knicks might end up with if they stick with the 8th pick and not looking to trade up.

i forgot bout that moron tinsley, he is a waste for a team like the pacers, they tru that Bj is the same and indy doesnt want that, so then i can see them geting evans, earl clark or james johnson, they need a low post scorer who can also rebound, danny granger needs help for that team.

I agree completely with this article. Assuming that the three pieces needed to win a title are a reliable point guard, a good center, and a great scorer/superstar, the Knicks have several key pieces. The way I see it the guys worth keeping are Duhon (reliable PG), Chandler (versatile SG), Harrington (shoot first SF), and Lee (utility PF). That being said, we still need a superstar to lead and a big man, but we’ve got the guard situation under control. Considering the fact that we can afford not one, but two, superstars in 2010 (of Wade, James, Stoudemire, and Bosh), all we need is a center and the rest will fall into place. Why would we need Curry? That’s just stock piling in an area we already have filled, Hill would be a great pick.
