Hahn: Knicks looking at Blockbuster with Wiz

by Tommy Dee on June 22nd, 2009 at 10:14 pm

Just finished the radio show with Rice Balls and came upon this nugget from Hahn.

“…The best opportunity may come with the Wizards’ pick at No. 5, though it would come at a very steep price. Multiple sources confirmed that the Knicks have discussed a potential blockbuster trade between the teams that would land the fifth overall pick and allow the Knicks to keep their spot at No. 8. The deal likely would have to include one of the team’s most valuable assets, swingman Wilson Chandler, which would be a difficult decision.

This scenario also might include Larry Hughes going back to Washington in exchange for guard Mike James, a Long Island product, and a big man such as Etan Thomas or Brendan Haywood. All of the players involved have expiring contracts.

The bold move by the Knicks, however, would not be to target Thabeet or even Spanish guard Ricky Rubio. It appears more likely that Davidson’s Stephen Curry or Memphis’ Tyreke Evans are the more coveted prospects.

The Knicks then could use their own pick at No. 8 to land Arizona power forward Jordan Hill, if he still is on the board. If not, there is Duke’s Gerald Henderson or USC’s DeMar DeRozan to consider as potential replacements for Chandler…”

Interesting. And Rubio could very well be there at 5, after what you heard from the blonde haired guy who’s always at Laker games for ESPN.

Haywood makes sense, (not Thomas if they are targeting Hill) as does Mike James and if the Knicks could bring both of them in AND pick 5 and 8 that would be the serious play I was expecting from Walsh. Guess it would be too much to include Jared Jefferies.

Let’s see. We’ll do some digging too, time to head down the Beltway to my old stomping grounds. See you Thursday!

  • Magik_Trick

Hughes for Thomas, James, and #5 would be a steal

I heard this deal was pretty close to happening but the Wiz just need 1 more piece,..personally..im more comfortable giving up Danilo than I am Wilson

  • slambam

I don’t see it happening, but I hope draft night is exciting.

  • belikmike23

I’d hate for the Knicks to trade Chandler.

  • Knicks4lyfe8

I would only give up Wilson if we pick curry.
    ONLY WAY.
Not Rubio, Rubio hasn’t even proved himself in a workout, hes scared he wont impress, hes a bust.
seems like theres always something wrong with Rubio, sick twice, a wrist injury, sprained ankle. dont want a guy like that on my team. want a guy with heart like curry who can lead a team with his energy and talent.

  • belikmike23

Duhon would be a solid backup for Arenas and can start when Arenas gets injured. The Knicks would be getting a PG in Mike James and likely drafting a PG so having James, Duhon and Rubio/Curry/Holiday/whoever would give them too many PGs.

  • KBT1615

    I CALLED IT!!!!
Hard to see Ill Will go though…Id only do it if we got Haywood though.

  • KBT1615

How can you call him a bust he is far from that . And he keeps “injuring” himself because he doesn’t want to workout for those teams.

  • BiggieSmalls

I like the idea of a deal with Washington.

Could be a block buster. So we end up with the player we want in Curry and another young player at 8

if we can get JJ involved then it will really help our cap situation.

If JJ is involved AND we get the 5 Im down for putting Wilson on the Acela to DC.

If we can get Blatche back too that would be unreal.

Hughes/JJ and Chandler for James, Thomas, Blatche and the 5?

  • 3dsoul

getting the 5th and the 8th pick and brendan haywood and mike james for wilson chandler and larry hughes and …whoever else, maaaaaan…you got me dreamin now! Please please please please please

I hate losing chandler but If we get haywood, its worth it. Lee along side haywood could work. oh man…please let this happen

  • BiggieSmalls

we can always include Duhon in another deal.. Getting rid of JJ’s salary is the prize in the box of cracker jack.

  • KBT1615

Duhon, JJ, and D Lee for Josh Smith…after this speculated trade.

  • EQ1217

I read that Josh Smith has a very difficult contract to trade, provisions, etc.

  • KBT1615

just a thought..I know about not until august and the 7 mill..

  • EQ1217

Honestly, if we get the 5 and 8, would it be better to get Curry at 5 and Twilliams at 8? Imaging three supreme ballhandlers at the same time in Curry, Gall & Twill.

  • bob go knicks

GALLO will be a star in the this league,he has a much ,much higher basketball I.Q. than CHANDLER, and a much bigger upside.get rid of chandler first

  • Magik_Trick

if we do make this trade, wether we got the better hand or not, determines on who we draft.

    5 would obviously be Rubio/Curry

    how about 8?

    T-Will?
    G Henderson?
    Gerald Green..i mean Demar Derozan?
but the dream scenario would be Jordan Hill falling to 8

  • BiggieSmalls

Maybe we get Duhon over to Portland in a Nate Sign and Trade for a first rounder and say Outlaw and maybe S Rod?

  • BiggieSmalls

agree.. sort of.. GAllo has a much higher ceiling.. he can handle and pass where Ill WIll cant .

  • BiggieSmalls

    LOVE IT!!

  • KBT1615

I say get Henderson so we can rob them of two players they love.

  • Mucha

If we end up with a point guard at #5 and a shooting guard at #8 then I’m the real Nostradamus. I’d ship Chandler to Washington if we’re not able to get Evans or Curry #8 – draft either one of them with the 5th pick and draft Demar DeRozan or even Gerald Henderson with our pick.

As a matter of fact, there’s no need to keep the 8th pick if we can get the 5th pick and keep Wilson Chandler in my opinion. But if Chandler leaves, most of us will forget him.

  • KBT1615

no we wont especially if the wiz come back with a healthy Gil.
    Gil
    Ill Will
    Caron
    Jamison
    Mcgee or Blatche

  • Mucha

DeRozan will be a pretty good player in my opinion, maybe not an All-Star but I think he’ll be a Corey Maggette or Josh Howard type of player.

In that scenario – if Curry’s the pick at 5 then Demar DeRozan should be taken at 8. If Donnie Walsh drafts Evans with Washington’s pick, then I’d select Gerald Henderson with our pick.

  • KBT1615

    the bobcats

  • Magik_Trick

I dont even think trading Wilson should really be considered at all though..

right now Chandler and Gallinari are our only players under 25, our only building blocks for the future..we should be willing trade anyone, everyone, besides those two, while still keeping #8

Chandler, Gallinari, Curry, J.Hill…..sounds like a nice start to me…get a center in there, and we got ourselfs a solid future..

and why are we all talking as if this trade is definetly going to happen..

  • Chris Alvino

I do nto like the idea of Gerald Henderson at 8. He is not the player that Wilson is, IMO. This is a tough call. Getting Haywood would be nice though.

  • Cheech

I would rather have Gerald Henderson than derozan. I made a really long comment the other day about how great it would be to get Henderson or Buddinger. If we got Curry with 5 and Henderson with 8 then we have the backcourt of the future.

I would hate to get rid of wilson, but if you think about it….Wilson is a strait up small forward. Danilo is too small for the 4 and to slow for the 3, he is a tweener. If we get rid of chandler that opens up playing time for danilo. Plus i think the easiest position to fill in basketball is the small forward. If we can get a shooting guard with the 8th pick, and a point guard with the 5th then we essentially have our 1, 2, and 3 positions filled for the future, with Dave Lee as a front court player.

IF we can get Curry and Henderson out of this draft. And if we can get haywood back from the wiz then i think its def worth it.

  • KBT1615

Two Things to push the deal they are saying we would probably have to trade Ill Will and how do you expect us to have Curry, Hill and Ill Will.

  • akdrum

Chandler is WAy overrated- I saw him play at that blowout The Knicks lost in Golden State- Chandler BLOWS- To soft..all of Isiahs guys have to go. They need “Smart” guys- Guys who are aggressive. D’Antoni is just watering at the mouth to get rid of all the slackers and millionare idiots. Im very interested to see what D Walsh pulls off. I think he’s got Stern lobbying for him. and we know who runs the Wizards….MJ..Maybe he wants to see a winning ball club when he comes to visit NYC?? Thats why he’s going to give up the 5 spot…fingers X for the reaping!!

  • KBT1615

You think Chandler is soft LOL.

  • Magik_Trick

Did you just say MJ runs the wizards…

  • JR

I was skippin through wizards blogs to see what they thought of the talks. Apparantly Hahn is the only person talking about it because only one blog posted it and they quoted him.

The funny thing is none of the wizards fans have ever heard of chandler. one looked up his stats and said “his 14.4 points are overrated because of d’antoni’s system and he plays horrible defense so i don’t want him”

I guess if the only time you ever saw him play is kobe’s highlight reel you would think he cant play defense too

  • bob go knicks

i agree about chandler being overated and soft (in the head too)get rid of him

  • slambam

MJ = Bobcats, the NBA isn’t corrupt so the Knicks will be good, they havn’t been good for years. If the Knicks want to be good they can’t rely on Stern pulling the strings or teams giving up their assets so the Knicks can be good. If they want to be good, Donnie’s gotta make the right decisions. I would rather have Wilson than Hill, so maybe tossing the 8th pick in instead would be a better idea.

  • Mucha

At times I want to register just to slap them in the face…

  • Magik_Trick

LOL, I guess thats how things work…

Chandler is known for 2 things..
Being the guy that let Nate Robinson jump of his back
and being in a few Kobe/LeBron highlight reels

But we all know what hes truly capable of, so trading him anywhere else, with his “inflated stats and bad defense”..we’ll most likely get the wrong end of the deal..

  • KBT1615

I have come to the conclusion that bob creates accounts just to have someone that agrees with him.

  • barnaby8787

Food for thought right here, hypothetically, say we do get the 5th pick and take curry. With 8 we take jordan hill (pending he falls which is highly probable). Then we buy a mid-late round first and grab ty lawson or someone like wayne ellington depending on if donnie/d’antoni feel that curry is more of a pg or a sg. Right off the bat, our 2010 lineup could easily be:

    pg-Lawson/Curry
    sg-curry/Ellington
    Sf-gallinari
    Pf-J. Hill
    C-Lee

Crazy enough? How about if we could somehow shop harrington and Lee for Bosh and perhaps filler. Granted, its hard to say if that’s enough, but we could possibly get bosh somewhere in that lineup. Not to mention the potential acquisition of s-rod which has been discussed. By the way, if j.hill wasn’t there, we could go guard again at 8 and take somebody like hansborough, who probably wouldn’t start, but could still provide solid minutes of the bench in the late round. Either way to say that i’m excited for thursday would be a complete understatement. What’s really crazy is that if we trade chandler, jj2, lee, and nate, only one player from the isiah regime would be left which is eddy curry, who could possibly be shopped. That would eliminate the cancer left from his regime completely.

  • barnaby8787

Btw, that doesn’t even include the fact that we could sign some big name free agents in 2010…

  • bob go knicks

WHAT IF WE GET THE 5 AND THE 8 AND TRADE BOTH FOR THE 2 AND TAKE RUBIO……..RUBIO and GALLO would be like having 2 movie stars on the team…….a superb passer and a smooth deadly shooter…this would be GREAT!

  • bob go knicks

    howz about big guy MULLENS?

  • bob go knicks

    YOU REALLY ARE AN IDIOT

  • barnaby8787

Mullens isn’t a top 10 guy. The crazy part is that chicago will take him at 16, but detroit, at 15, is looking to shop its pick for cash to free up some salary losing so many key guys this off-season. We could potentially get something like curry and hill for picks 5 and 8, and possibly by pick 15 from them and grab mullens. That would be insane.

  • bob go knicks

You wouldnt give up chandler for a shot at RUBIO? im tellin ya ,this guy is the JOINT,itll be 2 handsome latin all-stars rubio =fancy no-look passes to GALLO=dead on shooter whoooooooo gives me the chills just thinkin about it

  • bob go knicks

if all this comes to pass maybe we could trade our 8,for 2 more later first rounders take say ,MAYNOR /mullens/budinger

  • bob go knicks

yeah ,hes usually capable of sinking a three, and then being called for having his foot on the outta bounds line,or having a clear path to the hoop and instead of drivin to the basket ,bricks a long two

  • choggs

    LOL!! hahahah

  • choggs

I hope Walsh is smarter than all of us and do the right thing… I’m lobbying for chandler to stay. His stats may or MAY NOT be inflated by D’antoni’s system, but those stats are inflated because he fits in so nicely in it. Kind of like Shawn Marion 2 yrs ago.

Was his stats inflated? yes. We can see he underperformed in miami and toronto. But did PHX benefit for trading his ‘inflated stats” ? No. They were better off with him. I hope we don’t make the same mistake.

Plus, Chandler is way better than any prospect in #8. Why not swap picks, instead of including chandler in the deal?

  • italian stallion

Gallo is the massively more effiicent shooter and scorer now, but he was never much of a rebounder or assist man (surprisingly) in Europe. He did not fill out the stat sheet much in limted time here last year either. So to me, you can always use a very smart and great shooter, but he needs to do more on than court than that and we haven’t seen it yet. I don’t think he’ll ever be more than a mediocre rebounder (5 a night maybe), but he too many skills to not get more assists. That’s what he has to work on. He has to become a kind of point forward.

Chandler is way better defensively, can board OK for a SF (especially when asked to as he showed late in the year when his stats spiked) etc… His major problem is shot selection and drawing fouls. IMO, shot selection can be learned. So I think even if he doesn’t actually improve his shot over the summer, we are going to see more efficient scoring next year just by reducing some of the stupid shots. If he also improves his shot, his efficiency should spike to more average levels from below average last year. If he learns to go to the hoop consistently, finish, and draw fouls he will become a marginal all-star caliber player in a couple of years.

  • blacknese

If we trade chandler in that proposed deal then why dont we go and sign ariza to replace chandler draft rubio and hill with the 5th and 8th pick.

our lineup would be rubio, ariza, gallo, hill, haywood.

thats a pretty sexy lineup out there…

most likely lee will get traded and so will nate so our bench will be made up of duhon, richardson, mike james, curry and most likely j.j.

maybe we can get another starter for trading lee and nate that we can move hill to the bench for his first year.

i am really hoping we trade jared instead of hughes because i think hughes when healthy can be a beast like during the stretch he had last year.
