1050: Knicks trying to land 28

by Tommy Dee on June 24th, 2009 at 9:58 am

Update: 1050 ESPN is reporting that it is a done deal for 3 million dollars…although they are claiming that Wilson Chandler is untouchable as we look towards maybe other deals. The Kings pick at 4 is still in play I believe…

1050 ESPN Radio’s “professional pest” Andrew Marchand is reporting the Knicks are in the midst of trying to land the 28th pick in this year’s draft from the Wolves.

Interesting take, yet I’m hearing that it’s going to take more than the 3 million to land the other Wolves pick, which stands at 18. Walsh was adamant the other day in saying, “I’d love to have a pick, but people aren’t running around giving them away” and also added, “you might be able to get a really good player 20 to 30.”

The Knicks need to be aggressive and it would seem that with cash considerations the 18th pick could also be in play. Walsh would love that, but it seems the 28th could be the more available option.

But I’m hearing don’t count out 18 just yet.

Draftexpress.com has Chase Budinger  at 28 and our boy  Rodrigue Beaubois at 30.  The team could also do well to snag our other boy Danny Green as well.

Also, check out 1050 on Friday as BT will have coach Mike D’Antoni.

  • KBT1615

Hey Tommy any chance we buy the 18th and 28th? If we do uhh
    8th – Hill
    18th – Teague
28th – Danny Green, he will be better than Budinger.

But if we only get 18th Teague and Henderson.
    28th Hill and Green.

  • NJirish7

I’d like Budinger for sure. How about Josh Heytvelt or Jeff Pendergraph down there?

  • Lebron-Wade 2010

i have no interest in getting 28 and/ or 18 unless we package them together with the 8th pick to get number 2. But if we end up getting 18, i want hansborough, 28 danny green. We would be getting our guard at 8th pick with johnny flynn hopefully.

  • KBT1615

    NO HANSBOROUGH

  • impereal

I think we go after Danny Green with the 28th pick…I would love that pick…Let’s go Walsh we need 2 way players and Henderson (or best available…flynn maybe) and Green would do just that. If we CAN move up and get Curry instead of Henderson I would like that EVEN BETTER

  • Lebron-Wade 2010

haha, are you a blue-devil fan?

  • huge_knicks_fan11

On cbssports.com, Ken Berger confirms that the Knicks are trying to trade up to 3 to most likely select Curry. He did not say what we would have to give up to get there.

  • KBT1615

no but I know a lot of Carolina fans and I have made fun of Hansborough too much to accept him on my team.
Plus he is like a less athletic version of david lee.

  • KBT1615

We know it ain’t Ill Will.

  • EQ1217

Alan Hahn on twitter said that the Knicks bought the 28th pick

  • Tcarda44

Pendergraph and heytveldt would both be a waste of a pick. Id rather take a chance on a Euro and hope they panned out than taking these two. And hansborough is a poor mans david lee, there should be no scenario where the knicks take him. It will be interesting to see who has the worse career, Hansborough or Thabeet. it will be close

  • huge_knicks_fan11

I was just going to post that.

  • levy858

Haha Dick Vitale was just boasting about how Steph Curry is gonna be a superstar and that OKC should take him OVER Ricky Rubio. Not a chance IMO

  • BiggieSmalls

Hahn just tweeted that cash for the #28 is a done deal./

Knicks bought Minnesota’s 28th pick. DW has 2 first rounders now…the plot thickens….

  • EQ1217

If we don’t trade the picks, this allows us to draft best availabe at 8 and best available PG at 28 (Calathes, Mills, Collison?) not great players, but possible starting talent

  • Magik_Trick

I’d be dissapointed in 28, all the PGs worthwhile would be gone..
    Lawson, Teague, Maynor..

atleast 2 of them should be there at 18 though..

  • Tcarda44

it wouldve been great to get the 5 pick and keep the 8, but i think getting a lower 1st round pick may be a blessing since they dont give up any real assets for it, and with the draft being so deep they can still get quality here. To be honest, and im probably in the minority here, id rather they keep the 8 and 28 and draft two players, not move up to the 2 3 or 4. I would prefer 18 though but it must have been out of reach

  • EQ1217

There are plenty of options at 28 for a PG Calathes, Mills, Collison, maybe even Maynor

  • Tcarda44

maybe they can package the 28 and cash to move up in the lower 20s? or something of that nature…. what would the 28 and hughes get us in return?

  • KBT1615

    This is getting interesting again.

  • BiggieSmalls

The Knicks have the most riding on this draft of ANYONE int he top ten.

We have NO First rounder next year and are trying to get competitive to recruit Lebron and/or another big fish.

Donnie needs to step on the gas and get aggressive here

Buying the 28 for cash just doesnt cut it.

  • KBT1615

Hold up Whatever Happened To That Situation with The Warriors and Monta Ellis.

  • impereal

I think we should also purchase a early 2nd round pick…so we can get JODIE MEEKS…I can’t believe this guy is considered a LATE 2nd rounder..

    #8 pick – best player available…if it;s a PG….worst case TY LAWSON

    #28 pick – Danny Green

early 2nd rounder – JODIE MEEKS

    I would love these 3 players…

    I

  • Magik_Trick

    How about this…

Swap 8,28 with OKC for #3
    PLUS THIS:
    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=lgmkrs

  • KBT1615

If we keep the 28th I think Green is a lock.

  • KBT1615

And him not wanting them to draft a PG.

  • levy858

So basically, we give up 2 first rounders AND take on 2 contracts past 2010. No thank you

  • JASONHAYES

HEY GUYS CHECK THIS OUT COURTESY ESPN:

The Grizzlies aren’t just entertaining the idea of parting with the No. 2 overall pick in Thursday’s draft. They’ve also engaged in advanced discussions with the Knicks that should put former No. 2 overall pick Darko Milicic in New York by week’s end … unless Memphis winds up needing Milicic’s expiring contract in another draft-related trade.

Sources say that the proposed swap would send Milicic to the Knicks for swingman Quentin Richardson and cash. Milicic is scheduled to earn $7.5 million next season in the final year of a three-year deal he received from the Griz in 2007; Richardson has a player option for next season at $8.7 million.

If the teams go through with the trade, Milicic would join his fourth team since Detroit infamously gambled on him in 2003 with the pick immediately after LeBron James … and right before Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. But it’s believed that Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni hasn’t been able to kick his long-standing interest in seeing what he can get out of the perpetually, uh, casual 24-year-old. Despite his unquestioned standing as one of the biggest draft busts in league history, Milicic would have to be considered an intriguing one-year rental for the go-go-go Knicks given his length, mobility, passing skills and age.

    Wouldn’t he?

  • huge_knicks_fan11

Marc Stein is now reporting that the Knicks will trade Quentin Richardson for Darko after the draft is over assuming that Darko does not get trade before/during the draft.

  • Magik_Trick

    Weaver makes chump change
    and Collison isnt THAT bad…
plus we’d Rubio in the Griz pass on him..

  • huge_knicks_fan11

Hahn now says the 28th pick deal is on hold.

  • Lebron-Wade 2010

do you have to be an insider for steins report, if not, can u post the link.

  • Magik_Trick
  • Lebron-Wade 2010

    appreciated man.

  • pedro

So, Marcus Camby is available. Are the Clips in luxury tax territory next season? Maybe Mobley for Camby and an early 2nd round pick.

[...] Tommy Dee, citing 1050 AM reports that the deal for 28 is done and speculates that number 4 is still in play. We agree. Share [...]

  • j

If we’re going for the 3rd pick, it should for Rubio and then, Curry. Holiday might be a very good player, but Curry has to be our guy. He may not be a flashy passer like Rubio or Nash, but he’s got a shot that was joked around as better than Houston’s (!), decent athleticism, will be able to make the smart pass (maybe not the flashiest pass, but Duhon averaged 8 assists in the first half with this skill) and has decent height

I don’t know if Duhon is a good comp in terms of athleticism, but Curry is that type of player with what should be one of the purest jumpers in the game.

Duhon + Curry for 45 min a game = 15pts, 10 assists on an average night against man on man D and 20 pts, 8 assists against zone defenses.

  • cragganmor

at #28, the guys we should think about are demarre carroll, danny green, jermaine taylor and rod beaubois. it all depends on who we get in the lottery.

  • j
  • bob go knicks

what are we gonna do with pick #28?typical KNICKS;from RICKY RUBIO to pick 28

  • bob go knicks

i tell ya,if anything, this draft has been quite suspenseful,i cant take much more of the fake rumors.i just wish that DONNIE GENIUS would make a good deliberate move.TOMMY,is pick #3 still in play?

  • bob go knicks

    “” ” ” CRICKETS” ” ” ” isnt that your school bus?

  • Jeff Cykiert

Bob go knicks, i think we are all sick of your pessimism. it isn’t a failure in the NBA if you fail to move up to the top three picks to get the player you want. It is VERY hard to do, and most times you have to part with too many assets to get it done. It pretty much never happens. Most times, you just have to take what you’re given and be patient. Rest assured, Donnie is doing everything he can – he is renowned for being one of the best basketball minds of the last couple decades. But for you to be upset that we couldn’t pull of a blockbuster deal for the draft and start calling him ‘Donnie Genius’ and saying “bring Isiah back” is just ignorant and annoying to all of us actual knick fans/ basketball followers who understand that sometimes (most times) there is only so much you can do.

On the other hand, you’re probably just a kid, so i probably should continue to ignore your obnoxious, harsh comments.

  • KBT1615

No I drive. Thanks for being concerned though.

  • Bart

The 28 pick ?? Come on this is reminiscent of getting Hughes and Wilcox at the dead line, what kinda impact is the 28 pick gonna have unless were extremely lucky, it seems like one of those do it to just do it deals we couldn’t get a higher pick than 28.

On another note I’m thinking I like Henderson hes a high IQ guy kinda reminds me of Richard Jefferson. So lets say we take Hill at 8 and whoever @ 28. Then we S & T Lee to Portland after July and we get back Jerryd Bayless, we didn’t pick him but now we might have the chance to get him to run the offense.

Bayless would be a lock for the top 5 this year and I think he can be as Dynamic as Steph Curry under Mike D.

  • Jeff Cykiert

MUCHA! – YOU are going to LOVE this.

    Directly from ESPN:

“Unrelated but undeniably intriguing Warriors tidbit: Slender rookie Anthony Randolph, also known as the closest thing to an untouchable on the Warriors’ payroll, has gained 20 pounds and grown an inch to nearly 7 feet since the end of this past season.”

    oo-wee!

    Also,
Apparently Bosh has proclaimed that he needs to gain 20 pounds this summer if he wants to continue to improve and dominate more in the paint. I like the sound of that too.

  • KBT1615

Yea Just Continue To Ignore Him.

  • bob go knicks

just a kid?im betteing im older than most of the posters on here.hey im just havin some fun with this stuff! lighten up. when i got home from work at 1:30am was when i found out about the wolves deal ..JUST VENTING MAN.i have been a knicks fan since before they traded HOWARD “BUTCH” KOMIVES for DAVE DEBUSCHER(if i could only spell)

  • KBT1615

Come On You Dont Think A Danny Green Would Help That Much?

  • bob go knicks

TOMMY DEE,just heard again on espn CLEVELANDS interest in one EDDY CURRY

  • bob go knicks

if he could help that much,he wouldnt be going at # 28

  • Chandlerman

The Knicks should be able to get the 4 for the 8 and 28 and maybe cash. The Kings still get Flynn at 8, save on the rookie slotting system, the Knicks can pay for Flynn’s first year salary, and if the Kings want they can resell the 28 and pay for Flynn’s second year as well. Everyone wins and the Knicks get Rubio or Curry.

  • joeyballz

Reported by Marc Stein, ESPN INSIDER

Bonus Wolves nugget: “Kahn’s willingness to take on Darius Songaila, who is scheduled to earn $4.5 million next season, looks like the clincher that persuaded Washington to take Minnesota’s offer over New York’s for the Wizards’ lottery pick: Randy Foye and Mike Miller in exchange for No. 5, Etan Thomas, Oleksiy Pecherov and Songaila. Shedding Songaila wasn’t an option in a deal with the Knicks built around Wizards ex Larry Hughes.”

Apparently this was why the Knicks were not able to obtain the 5th Pick from Wash. I would be very dissapointed if this were actually the case

    ——————————————————————————–

  • Mucha

I’m going to love this Jeff? “also known as the closest thing to an UNTOUCHABLE on the Warriors’ payroll”…

Thanks for the link though, this kid’s going to be a monster…

  • Mucha

Hopefully the Knicks will aquire Milicic, I hope the rumor is true because he’s still very young and he’s talented (call me crazy…).

  • illsun

    Go vent somewhere else.

  • JASONHAYES

You guys who are complaining about the 28th pick are crazy! Did you forget David lee was the 30th pick in the 2005 draft. There is talent out there, Donnie will do the right thing. TRUST THE MAN. Plus we need more young hungry talent, we are ridding ourselves of some losing mentality players. We are not just trying to build a good team, but a new fresh winning culture!

  • illsun

    Songalia’s contract extends past 2010.

  • bmathews77

    Anyone hear about this:

“The Grizzlies have engaged in advanced discussions with the Knicks that will Darko Milicic in New York by week’s end, unless Memphis winds up needing Milicic’s expiring contract in another draft-related trade.

Sources say that the proposed swap would send Milicic to the Knicks for Quentin Richardson and cash. Milicic is scheduled to earn $7.5 million next season in the final year of a three-year deal he received from the Griz in 2007; Richardson has a player option for next season at $8.7 million.”

  • knicks55

kk how bout this for either the second or third pick

ship #8,#28 and al harrington to the OKC andget that third pick and take rubio, then buy a another late pick or a second rounder which will be cheap and then select danny green or jodie meeks…. win win for us i would belive

or #8, david lee and chris duhon for the #2, select rubio or curry, wouldnt be mad with either, the one thing that conserns me is if Dw drafts thabust ooo sry i meant thabeet then i will booo for sure i dont want doppy thabeet runnng with our team, he has no offensive game exept dunking, plz, high schoolers can dunk, does that mean there considered #2 quality, absolutley not, unless ur lebron james or amare.

do the right thing donnie, get our man rubio or curry, get NY native danny green, budinger or meeks, and i will sleep great thursday night.

  • Bart

I have a feeling Knicks are going all out to try and get Curry now they dropped the ball on the 5 pick hopefully Walsh sees that his stare down tactics won’t work because teams will just trade with some one else.

I just heard NY tried to get the 27 from Memphis. Getting VERY VERY interesting.

  • bob go knicks

danny green, why would the knicks want another SF ?

  • KBT1615

    Where?

  • Bart

Yeah but Isaiah Thomas is not the GM.

  • Jeff Cykiert

haha i didn’t mean love as a knicks fan, i just meant love because i know you think randolph is ridiculous, and this just makes him more ridiculous… Actually, i guess I could have said “Mucha, you are going to HATE this’”

    haha.

  • Bart

1050 Radio but I think they said Memphis turned them down.

  • bob go knicks

    your crazy

  • KBT1615

He plays the 2 Guard good to.

  • joeyballz

I would have rather eaten a little into our 2010 cap size than give up Chandler….According to this tidbit Hughes and 4.5 million less to spend in 10 would have netted us the 5th pick outright. Would have done it………….

  • knicks55

i hope DW can learn from his mistakes, not try to wait it out to see what happens,

plz god, i really want rubio or curry

rubios offeensive game will eventually get better, and curry will be a very good player

  • bob go knicks

i like either of those deals, anything that gets me outta the funk that the wolves trade got me into

  • Brandon

Does anyone know if the 28th pick deal is official? Hahn posted before that it wasnt after he said it was.

  • bob go knicks

at this stage of his game he shouldnt be making these kinds of mistakes,i know that JEFF would like us all to line up and kiss MR WALSHS rings …..but uh he doesnt have any

  • bob go knicks

no its not ,i heard it was held up for one reason or another

  • Brandon

Is it still going to end up happening or is it up in the air?

  • Jeff Cykiert

It seems like memphis will pick thabeet if they can’t trade the pick, and we know OKC won’t take Rubio, so i think our primary target right now is to trade up to the 4th pick. if we can do that, and no Rubio-lovers get memphis’ pick, we should be able to snatch him.

is there anything we can do to get the kings’ pick?

    Any ideas?

  • BiggieSmalls

I would think our best hope is post draft in a Sign and trade for Nate

  • gbaked

i am with you on this. It has not been that long since he came into the league, he is so young still and has good skills to play in our system.

QRich has been a true gamer for us, but I will not be sad to see him go.

  • bigknicka

    you’re crazy

  • bigknicka

this is true if there was one thing that isiah was remotely good at it was draft picks….wilson chandler, david lee, channing frye (wouldve been great in this system) and love him or hate him nate robinson…dont forget trevor ariza

  • Bart

Why wont they take Rubio I heard they were working on a buyout for him and people were saying thing like imagine what Rubio could do for Kevin Durant.

  • Mucha

    LMAO that’s more accurate.

  • bigknicka

i love the first idea, i dont know nobody talks about trading al harrington? expiring contract that could start right away maybe even add mobleys contract to sweeten the deal if we could get their 25th as well

we cant trade lee because hes a restricted free agent so using him in a sign and trade with portland maybe with q-rich or jeffries for fernandez and outlaw (or batum) would work but thats only an option later in the summer

  • Bart

So is it a no on Bayless?

  • Mucha

@ Jeff – Like I said, Cuttino Mobley’s contract (80% covered by insurance) and the 8th pick (Johnny Flynn) for Kenny Thomas for the 4th pick.

    Make it happen Donnie.

  • bob go knicks

biggie, how would that work if we cant sign nate til july?is it legal to do an under the table verbal deal?can we do “a player to be named later” like in baseball?

  • Mucha

Yes I am! But “ridicule is the burden of genius”!

  • bigknicka

i say use wilson chandler in any trade scenario to get the 3rd or 4th pick if we can get the 28th as well us that in the deal…..and we could use david lee in a sign and trade to get a small forward or shooting guard to replace chandler maybe fernandez from portland or possibly sign gordon this offseason, we dont have to go all crazy next summer after the big 3 or 4 if u count amare there is alot of talent next summer like nowitzki, ginobli, lamarcus aldridge is restricted as well as rudy gay

  • bob go knicks

    lol. now THATS funny!

  • joeyballz

Good question Bob, I am assuming that the teams can verbally agree, without putting the info out to the public

  • bigknicka

    now thats genuis!!!

  • bigknicka

    how about trading GALLO???

  • bob go knicks

no way!cant trade GALLO under any circumstance,..first of all hes italian, and all italians belong in new york, second hes got one of the sweeeeeeetest shots ive ever seen, when you see him play a full season without injury you wont want to move this guy .3rd ,he has pretty much no value as a trade chip right now, like EDDY CURRY,other teams have got to see if he is over his injury,….you dont want to trade a guy whos value isnt at peak

  • Mucha

He has All Star potential and his trade value is down. Trading him would be a horrible buisness decision in my opinion.

  • bob go knicks

this is why i say trade CHANDLER now while his value is high, honestly you really dont know if hes gonna get better, its about 50/50 some guys on here believe hes gonna be a stud,i for one dont, trade him now before other teams realize hes just not that good……of course i could be wrong (theres a first time for everything)LOL

  • bigknicka

it was only a joke dont worry i love gallo too… i just wanted to know what the reaction would be even though im open to trading chandler

  • Mucha

Haha alright. I’d only trade him for a Melo, an Anthony Randolph or an OJ Mayo.
