Henderson Over Jennings

by Tommy Dee on June 24th, 2009 at 9:45 am

Frank Isola is reporting that the should Brandon Jennings and Gerald Henderson be on the board at 8, the Knicks prefer the Duke guard, who has been having tremendous workouts.

“…The Knicks own the eighth pick in Thursday’s draft and are trying to move into the top four in order to take Rubio, the highly touted point guard from Spain. Rubio, Curry and Evans are all projected to go in the top seven.

When it comes time for the Knicks to make their pick, point guards Brandon Jennings Jrue Holiday should both be available, but people familiar with the club’s thinking claim that Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni prefer Henderson, a 6-5 shooting guard from and son of the former player – and former Knick – of the same name.

The thinking among the Knicks’ brain trust is that Henderson, unlike Jennings and Holiday, has the ability to step in and make an immediate contribution. Henderson, who averaged 16.5 points last season as a junior, is regarded a strong character individual with a high basketball IQ. In a majority of mock drafts, Henderson is projected to be picked either 11th or 12th…”

Well, you know we love Henderson who has the NBA frame and athleticism to help immediately, but I can imagine the unmerciless booing should they take him. He’s a good, solid fit moving forward.

Tommy, I feel it is imperative for the Knicks to trade into the top 4 at any cost. Gallo is my only untouchable asset and the rest is expendable. Chandler less so, but if they can keep the 8th pick then he would have to go.

  • KBT1615

I won’t boo that matter of fact I will cheer. The fans booing have a problem like who did they want Holiday? And I am the biggest Brandon Jennings promoter here but he is small and the Knicks don’t like him that much.
Everybody will Learn In Donnie We Trust.

  • Lebron-Wade 2010

I dont understand the point of picking henderson. Hes not a shot blocker, hes not great on the boards. We need a pure point guard to run the floor, like rubio. Watching video , he also doesnt seem like he would be a good fit in the system.

  • Magik_Trick

    Smokescreen IMO

  • KBT1615

Yea you have to have a backup plan you know in case we can’t get Rubio and we have to pick between Holiday and Jennings…
Some of You guys expect too much from the Knicks which leads to to you being disappointed when it doesn’t happen and then being bitter.

  • NJirish7

I really hope we don’t take Henderson. Out of all the possibilities he would be far and away the last on my list.

  • SpaceMan

    i hope so.

  • Lebron-Wade 2010

I dont think its too much to ask for to move up 4 spots considering the plethora of losing this team has experienced recently.

  • Kid Tarheel

I would personally be very happy with that. Generally speaking, Tarheel fans would never dream to root for a dookie. But I would be so very excited to see Gerald Henderson in a Knick uniform. He is an excellent athlete and can defend the other teams best guard. He has a great midrange game and he can excite the crowd with a monster dunk. And he is a great person as well. Extremely confident but not cocky. His father is a good man and he has taught his son well and I think he will be ready to contribute from day 1. Also, I don’t think he was given much offensive freedom at duke, so there is a chance that he can blossom into a much better scorer than he showed at duke.

If we can snag that 18th pick and pick up Tywon Lawson, I think we will have done as well as anyone could have hoped in this draft. I still think Tywon is a perfect choice for pg of this Knicks team.

  • KBT1615

Tommy it looks like only me and you will be clapping for Gerald. If we pick him over BJ and Holiday.

  • italian stallion

If you read Berman’s article from today it sounds like Chandler is still considered virtually untouchable (agent said that Knicks said “he WON’T be traded before draft”). In fact, it sounds like the reason the Knicks didn’t get the #5 pick is because they didn’t want to give up Chandler, not that the Timberwolves offer was considered better.

If that is true (and I suspect it is)…

    1. It tells you how how high the Knicks still are on Chandler

    2. It makes it almost impossible to imagine a scenario where the Knicks can get a higher pick

    3. If they really want a specific player that will get drafted ahead of them, it is probably going to happen later on as part of a sign and trade for Lee/Robinson.

I think Thursday is going to be a yawner for NY Knicks fans.

  • KBT1615

    and Kid Tarheel.

  • Donkeyote

I would take Henderson if we could get a second first round pick to draft a point guard. For some reason, I think the biggest steal in the draft is going to be Jeff Teague. For some reason, he reminds me of CP3 without the flash that made CP3 a top lottery pick.

  • KBT1615

    and Donkeyote

  • KBT1615

Henderson and Teague. I like that two players I watched all the time in college.

  • Donkeyote

I would be delighted with Holiday – Not BJ – he reminds me of the second coming of Stephon Marbury and we all know how that went.

  • Magik_Trick

The only way this is true is if…we traded Wilson Chandler for a later pick..O_o
Which, i dont believe that will happen

And personally im higher on T-Will than Henderson…

  • Not Hawthorne Wingo

Henderson at 8 sounds a little high to me. Lawson at 8 might be a better pick though still high and Hill at 8 might be the best pick though it also could mean that Lee is a gonner and we lose some leverage in a sign and trade. Trading down and getting Maynor plus Young or some other good role player might be even a better choice. I’m actually intrigued by Rodrique Beaubois at the bottom of the draft. This is going to be a very interesting draft to rate 3 years from now.

  • NJirish7

I wont be happy but I certainly won’t boo him I’ll definitely give him time to prove himself. Booing does nothing good.

  • Donkeyote

There has been a lot of talk of the Knicks buying one of Minnesota 1st Rounders.

  • NJirish7

I get the feeling that if Rubio is still available at 4 we can swing a deal with the Kings, who can get Flynn at 8 who they love.

  • levy858

Personally I’m not particularly high on Ty Lawson. I am much higher on Jeff Teague and even Eric Maynor. Also, with the way the draft is shaping up, it seems possible that Jennings can drop rather significantly. Possibly enough for Walsh to discuss possibly acquiring a pick to get him and keep Henderson.

  • KBT1615

Why use the 8 on Ty Lawson he is easily falling out of the lottery we can pick him up later on.. But Henderson isn’t falling out of the lottery.

  • KBT1615

The other fans need to seriously stop doing that it is making all of us look bad.

  • Magik_Trick

The best thing for us to do, IMO, is draft Jordan Hill at 8, get a later pick…Lawson, Maynor, Teague, and who knows..maybe Jennings/Flynn/Holiday could fall..

Then we could let Nate & Lee go, save a ton of cash..and have young building blocks in Gallinari, Chandler, Hill, and the other PG we draft

  • Lebron-Wade 2010

I dont know why johnny flynn isnt mentioned that much. I think he would be a perfect fit if we cant get rubio. He is an all around point guard who can play both guard posistions, and is close to the area. If he is there when we pick, i think we have to take him.

  • chrisdudley

henderson would be a much better pick at 8 than holiday. however, if flynn is on the board at 8, i think donnie will pick him. henderson is a nice player, kind of a richard jefferson, but smaller. he has an extremely high bb iq, and the kid is an athlete. we have to remember, not only do we need a point guard, we need a shooting guard also! if donnie picks henderson, i could see him picking up that 18th pick and picking a point guard there. teague and/or lawson could still be on the board, and at 18, that would be an absolute steal.

  • craigamus83

He’s a good player but he reminds me too much of Wilson Chandler. When I watch the footage I see similar offensive moves and obviously the athleticism is there. Gerald Henderson is more polished and more aggressive. I’m not sure if he would help us as much as a PG would.

  • Donkeyote

I would be happy with Flynn but if he’s not there….which I have a feeling he wont be – we have to look for solid options. Henderson, Teague and others because we need to get better at the basics. The bad thing is that the Knicks need every position. If I could get rid of Harrington for a late pick I would do it. Why not start young?

  • Donkeyote

I don’t understand why everyone is enamored with Wilson Chandler. He’s a good player but if you think hes going to be a star everyone is mistaken. Hes a solid player but what would happen if we got a two/three in next years free agency period. He would be stuck in the bench. Then what? We won’t get great value for the guy. We had our future two set in Trevor Ariza but Isiah let it go.

All I am saying if we can get a high pick for Chandler let him go especially if we plan on picking Stephan Curry.

  • Tcarda44

Flynn will be a stud in the NBA but needs to work on his defense. Im pretty sure all that will take is effort, he has the tools to be a good defender but did not apply himself at all at Cuse. However, he can get to the basket WHENEVER he wants and is an under-rated passer with a decent shot that will get better. If hes there at 8 i BEG that the knicks take him. forget holiday and henderson

  • EQ1217

My only concern with Henderson is that his jumper is suspect.
Also if we draft Henderson, does that mean that Gallo & Chandler are the starting forwards? then that leaves 2 starters with a suspect shot.

This draft is important in that the Knicks need starting talent, not a 6th or 7th man of the bench

  • KBT1615

His Three is suspect, not mid range.

  • renenyg1

When Curry was hurt last year and his shooting touch was question my favorite player going into this draft was Henderson and my notes have allways rated him as my type of player,he’s a smart guy with great character and plays a complete game of ball he rebounds better then most guards, plays defense better than most is not turnover prone which I hate in most of these guys coming out,Henderson makes the most of our position at eight we get the guy we want at eight not be force with Jennings or a holiday .I love getiing Curry but Henderson is a great fallback pick IMO,he drives and goes to the line and in close he has short jumpers, this guy has a complete smart game which we can fit in with a great coach,I like T Will too we should get more picks too.

  • Tcarda44

T-Will to me will be the steal of the draft in the mid-teens. What could be packaged with the 28 pick to move up to 15?

  • bob go knicks

thats what i say,CHANDLER will end up no more than an average player at best

  • bob go knicks

we need to get rid of a DUKE guy,not bring in another one

  • NYKinATL

    Good character?

Where are you guys drawing on Henderthug’s good character.

He is a gutless player who never stepped up in big moments. His claim to fame is the mugging (punching in the face) of Tyler H late in a game against Carolina when the game was already in the books. Hard foul my a**. Furthermore…he never apologized and his coach, that prick Coach K-Y justified the action by claiming that Henderson was the real victim in the media-maelstrom that followed.

Do we really want more DOOK taint on this team? Aren’t the skidmarks from Duhon’s stellar play enough. Dook players don’t often translate in the NBA. They play a gimmicky 3 pt chucking style interspersed with the DOOK flop defense. Good luck getting those calls in the NBA Henderthug!

I would like to see the knicks pick up 2 guards in this draft. Hoping for 1 of Curry, Evans or Harden and then hoping that Jennings slips and the Knicks can maneuver a trade to pick him up or grab Ty Lawson who would likely excel running D’Antoni’s offense which is not much unlike what the Heels run.

  • Mucha

We need a point guard, Henderson would be a nice addition but Jrue Holiday should be the pick if Donnie Walsh stays at #8.

  • knicks55

tcarda44, im in agreement %100, he is the steal of this yeras draft, i rave bout t-will bc wat he brigns to the table, can get 6 rebounds, 18 points, 5 assists per game, and defend well

if the knicks trade there supposed 28th pick along with a guy like chris duhon, or jj, or larry hughes to get to that 15 pick, you have ur starting 2gaurd, then with that 8th pick take BJ, Flynn or holliday, then we will have milicic too so this would be a great start for the lebron campaign

1.jennings or holliday or flynn either doesnt matter, all will be good
    2. t-will
    3.ill will
    4.gallo
    5.d lee/milicic

  • Tcarda44

Yup, he is the most versatile player in the draft. Im a big syracuse fan (which is why i want Flynn so bad at 8) but T-Will was to me hands down the player of the year in the big east last year. I cant imagine him not being effective in the NBA

  • renenyg1

I never saw Henderson flop once but I did see numerous rejections which is what we need,Henderson is the best defensive two in this draft the Dookies had the baddest dee in the planet and by the way I want to get another pick to get Ellington to be my backup two.Henderson is from good bloodlines and his father raised him right,Duke has a great program, coach K is a legend hear it and like it.
