Time to Focus on Lawson?

by Tommy Dee on June 27th, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Got an interesting Tweet from “Section 518″ who had a thought that I had on Thursday once I heard that Ty Lawson was traded to Denver.

Walsh loves Lawson, and it may seem that the Rubio deal doesn’t have the right parts. Not sure the Wolves would want David Lee with both Kevin Love and Al Jefferson up front. Do they do Chandler and Nate? Who knows. Rubio’s camp wants out and the situation could really drag out.

The Nuggs apparently offered Linas Kleiza for David Lee, which Walsh turned down. Does Ty Lawson cause the deal to be revisited?

That won’t be easy. We reported that Denver wanted to jump into the mix to get a point guard pre draft, so that they can groom the player under Chauncey Billups. And more importantly, George Karl bleeds Tarheel blue as well, but they are on the cusp of a championship and could use Lee’s energy more than that of a rookie PG.

You would have to figured that it would have went down, or go down by Wednesday so that David could negotiate with Denver, who we knows loves him.

Not sure what the legalities are since the Nuggs are over the cap, but there might be a fit here between the Knicks and the Nuggs.

It may be ignorant, but I REFUSE to give up hope on Rubio. I’m a big met fan but even during the subway series I cant stop watching Rubio highlights. It disappointed me so much i had to watch Danilo highlights ot make myself feel better haha. But seriously, Chandler would be a good fit for Minnesota, so him plus another piece, as you mentioned possibly Nate (who could agree to go there in the hopes of being “the man” on offense), but I just feel we have to do whatever it takes to get this guy, and get this franchise turned around.

  • Knicks_1974

If i had the choice between:

Sending Chandler for Rubio or sending Lee for Lawson. There is only one way I’m going and that’s the Lawson way.

I would take Lawson over Rubio anyway. At least we have another rumour to break up all the Rubio talk.

  • slambam

    We need MORE Rubio Rumors!

  • Charles

Me 2 the only thing keeping me hype is the taught of getting rubio

  • Magik_Trick

I think it comes down to those two options

    Lee for Lawson & Kleiza

    or

    Nate and Wilson for Rubio

And I think Donnies gonna make an option on who we are more willing to give up, Lee or Chandler

Only time will tell, and truthfully, i’d be satisfied with either trade

When I talked to TD about this, I said JR Smith and Lawson. Smith has the potential to dominate on this team. He also fills a positional need on this team. Make it Smith, Lawson, and a future 2nd pick in 2011 to replace the one we traded to LA for Douglas..

  • KBT1615

I like Lawson and JR better and smiths contract isn’t that bad to where it would mess us up.

  • Mucha

    Our best options are :

    1. Jerryd Bayless (my favorite)
    2. Ty Lawson
    3. Johnny Flynn
    4. Ricky Rubio

But it’ll be hard to find a match financially with the Blazers or the Nuggets in a sign-and-trade deal.

What if Rubio agrees to play with the Timberwolves if Johnny Flynn gets traded? Wilson Chandler for Johnny Flynn (who – I know – wasn’t a target) would be a fair deal, and the #6 pick raised eyebrows – not Rubio’s selection – I guess a trade for Wilson Chandler wouldn’t be unpopular.

  • EQ1217

I have no problem with Lawson, but Kleiza?!?! We have to give him a multi year contract!! how many more SF do we need?

I am not ready to give up on Rubio just yet.

  • NYK FAN IN OZ

who led the league in DD last year?

why do all these supposed knick fans think Lee is so expendable… Lee was a double double monster waiting to happen before d’antoni got here… offensively he obviously has room to grow and considering his work ethic there is no reason to think he can’t get more well rounded in other areas… He led the league in DD no small feat. Provided with the right big man in tandem a la Jordan Hill / Darko … Lee won’t log so many center minutes and get worn down by bigger and heavier opponents on a regular basis. Lee is a workhorse with as professional an attitude as we have seen in a knick uniform in quite a while… considering some of the chemistry issues we have had on this team i have never heard Lee’s name come up… Lee is coveted not only for his stats but the intangibles he brings every day to work.

all this Jordan Hill makes Lee expendable is rubbish! Hill is a compliment not a replacement… sure if a trade for lee makes sense im sure Donnie will do it with Hill as future insurance… Hill aint comin and takin anybody’s starter job for at least a year maybe more. The only scenario i could see donnie dealing lee is if he can get rid of Curry in a package or 3 team deal.

I don’t think there’s any chance of getting JR Smith and Lawson for Lee and some minor pieces. There were tmes when JR – not Chauncey, not Melo – carried Denver at times in the playoffs, there’s no way they are going to part with him this easily.

If there was a chance to get JR, though.. In my opinion he would be an all-star in the east under D’Antoni.

  • Chris Alvino

Lee is not expendable in the sense that we are looking to actively resign him. As D’Antoni bluntly said the other day with BT, Lee is the best big man on the Knicks right now. That includes Hill, Darko, and Curry.

But if another team offers Lee a big contract, and that team has pieces that can help the Knicks, then Lee suddenly becomes more expendable. If Denver would trade Smith to the Knicks, then I would make that move. Smith is an up-and-coming star in this league. No question.

But otherwise, DW will try to keep Lee here. If he has a reasonable contract, he will always have trade value later.

I would love to get JR Smith in a trade. I’ve always liked him since before he made a name for himself with the Nuggets. Unfortunately I don’t think Lee would bring Smith and Lawson to us, but maybe if we threw in Harrington and maybe Mobley’s contract or Hughes (if we got Smith we wouldn’t need Hughes) but then this would make a McGrady trade unlikely (though having Smith IMO would be better, he’s younger and much less injury prone). I still wouldn’t mind trading Nate and JJ to the Kings for Kenny Thomas and maybe we can get a 2010 first round pick out of that. We just need a way to get rid of JJ and a trade with the Wizards wouldn’t bring us anything useful (though I’d take Nick Young without question.) Any thoughts?

  • CircleLimit4

I hate to say it considering this PG class looks special but perhaps we should focus on the FA pg crop, i.e. Sessions or CJ Watson.

  • Bruno

Wolves could use Harrington. Nuggets need Lee about as much as Minny does, they got Nene, K-Mart and BirdMan.

  • j

Lawson might not be the best fit, but he is an intelligent PG who knows how to run a team… would Jameer Nelson be a good comp? I loved Nelson when he came out because he showed he had NBA tenacity and a chip on his shoulder and hopefully all this PG talk has motivated Lawson to sure he’s a legit option at the 1.

Lawson is definitely not a HR but he’s a better PG than Duhon.

Kleiza is interesting but I don’t know much about him. I remember he scored 41 once, but every dog has his day. Anyone have info on him?

  • CircleLimit4

I don’t think anyone here wants to see Lee go, but the truth is that his value is peaking and it would be smart to “sell high” for the right pieces. Couple this with Lee’s glaring defensive inadequacies and the possibility of him commanding an 8-figure contract and you have the recipe for trade bait.

I like Lee for the right price but the reality of the situation is that he we could get more by S&T.

  • Bruno

    From HOOPSHYPE:
“The Grizzlies had agreed in principle to acquire power forward Zach Randolph Thursday night but Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling later nixed the trade, according to two NBA sources. During the NBA draft, executives from both teams hammered out a package with Randolph and Darko Milicic as the key pieces. Griz guard Greg Buckner would also have been included in the transaction. The Griz ended up dealing Milicic to the New York Knicks for swingman Quentin Richardson after they waited on a final answer from the Clippers and received a curious no.”

LOL Dunleavy & Sterling are as stupid as Khan LOL
How do you draft Griffin and NOT dump Zach’s contract???

  • Magik_Trick

I feel bad for him now, there gonna ruin his career over there…

They might’ve been able to get away with keeping Kaman/Camby but Randolph definitely had to go..why on earth would they find a deal to get rid of him, and then nix it at the last minute..

  • Chris Alvino

Well Sessions and Watson are on two different lists there. Sessions is a 30 mpg starter. Watson is not, but I did love watching him play last year for GS. He opened my eyes.

  • EQ1217

    seriously, poor Blake Griffin

if lee stays with the KNICKS now ,with HILL,DARKO,GALINARI (paying many more minutes)and EDDY CURRY coming back ,LEE prolly wont log as many minutes per as he did last year, and with some rebounds going to the other bigs,DAVID will never get as many double doubles as he did last year,so stat wise his value will never be more than it is right now!

  • Its The Kid

Get resigned to the fact that David Lee will not be back next year, I know Hahn, Tommy Dee, and BT have been beating it into our heads that this is not true but they are wrong… Lee is not taking a home town discount, forget that, thats what agents are for, if you can get 10mil a year why take 7mil, that adds up to a 15mil loss over 5yrs which is dumb… You cant pay a man 9-10mil a year to play 24mins on a 32 win team… It cant be justified… With the addition of Darko, Hill, and Curry coming back along with AL. Will, and Gallo…It doesnt make sense… Unless Hill is traded for Rubio and I doubt that happens… So from a financial stand point it makes no sense… Donnie is too smart to do that, and when you really think about it, its the correct move… And we already know we arent messing up the 2010 plan…

  • barnaby8787

I’m not going to jump on the trade for rubio train but honestly, if you think that Lee is more expendable than Chandler, you’re on crack. First off, we have gallinari. Granted, he’s still a risk, but honestly, I’d be much happier with gallinari replacing chandler (who doesn’t play that big of a role for us) than hill replacing lee who led the league in double doubles and is arguably the only player on our team who rebounds on a consistent basis. With that said, I don’t think we need rubio but I’d be much more inclined to trade nate and chandler for rubio than lee for kleiza and lawson. I think that if we’re going to trade lee, than we should trade him as part of a deal that gets us either bosh or amare. Otherwise, to take on kleiza who plays the 3, scores 10 points a game, and snags 4 rebounds plus ty lawson to me just isn’t worth it. There still is a market for lee and I honestly don’t care what portland says, they still want him. Not to mention the other teams in the league who are still desperate for a big man; there’s always plenty.

  • Its The Kid

Why do people always want to make the Lee conversation about Chandler… Lee is a free agent Chandler isnt, so no matter what happens with Chandler, Lee is still out the door… If Lee was in a rookie contract he’d remain a Knick but he isnt, and Chandler is… So the 10mil Lee is asking for damn sure makes him expendable… This is business not a popularity contest… I love when people say Lee, a 26yr old player has so much upside but Chandler a 22yr old in his 2nd year doesnt… Thats laughable, so Lee’s jumper will get better but Chandlers wont… Why do Knick fans make the Gallo and Chandler arguement at this point, Gallo isnt healthy and doesnt even have a position yet, but you want him to replace Chandler… But replacing Chandler isnt even an issue, if he out plays Chandler this year maybe, but that hasnt happened yet… All this Gallo is better than Chandler stuff is a waste, they are both on our team and in rookie contracts… So stop the Chandler and Gallo debate, seems like you have an agenda when you keep bringing that up.. No decision has to be made yet, but for Lee its a different story…

  • Sangfroid

Love David Lee. Not worth 10-11 mil per. Att anywhere near these numbers, he’s got to go.

  • italian stallion

    I agree.

Some people underrate Lee and some people overrate him, but when you look at the whole package I don’t think he’s worth some of the high numbers being tossed around.

  • willtonk21

When it comes to the talk of guys that are expendable or not, I don’t understand why people aren’t mentioning Nate Robinson as a guy that is not expendable. Robinson is 25 years old and has shown the ablility to rack up multiple 30 point games in a row. In the 5 games following the all-star break Robinson averaged 30 ppg, 7 rpg and 7 apg in 37 mpg. There are only about a dozen other guys in the leauge capable of putting up multiple 30 point games like that and Nate is only going to get more consistant as he nears his prime and matures as a player. Not only is he capable of taking over games at times, unlike anyone else on the current Knicks roster, Robinson could make a great compliment to a 2010 guy whether it be coming off the bench or as an eventual starter. Hard to justify getting rid of a guy with such scoring potential who has flurished under D’Antoni, with little to nothing in return. With the addition of the value you gain by resigning him in the current economic times I think keeping Robinson is a no brainer, barring getting a player that can help us win games right now in return. We’re going to need some proven pieces in place if we want to attract any big names to NY, doesn’t matter what gym we play in.
