Is Kidd the Way To Go?

by Chris Alvino on June 28th, 2009 at 12:26 pm

Maybe.  Maybe not.  I am not sure how to think about this idea right now.  He is on the way down in his career, but he is still one of the better lead guards in the league.  There are rumors that he will accept the MLE to play closer to his kids, and that is why he would play in NY.  The Knicks cannot offer him more than that.  I have also read that the Knicks might not want to offer him more than one year in any deal.  Why?  Well the logical reason is that Walsh does not want to add anymore salary for the 2010-2011 season.  Truthfully, if Kidd has multiple years left in his legs, then he should be signed to a multi-year deal.

But because of his age, I am not sure if he is the right player to target.  The Knicks are not a title contender this year. Not even close.  If the Knicks landed LeBron next summer, they would perhaps be much, much closer, but  that is a major if.

Kidd, if you ask me, will not sign with the Knicks.  He should go for a title.  Teams like Cleveland, LA, Portland, and San Antonio are better options for Kidd. Portland can actually offer more than the MLE, so he would really get a better deal in terms of money and in terms of the chance to get a title.

So what does everyone think?  Is Kidd the way to go with our MLE?  My hunch is that he will not be a Knick next year.

Chris: I agree that we are not a play off contender and yes, Kidd is too old to wait. He needs a play off contender, if he can find one. I am intrigued with Steve Nash who should be looking for a home now that Phoenix appears to be contemplating a total rebuild. Nash is younger, in better shape and D’Antoni’s guy. Perfect for us. Our first real star quality player. Your thoughts.

  • EQ1217

Honestly, Nash, Kidd, we don’t need veteran PG right now. We should be trying to rebuild, by trying to acquire a PG like Rubio, Lawson or Bayless.

I truly hate the path that we seem to be on, which is just wait for 2010 and sign free agents. a part of me kind of just wishes that LeBron, Wade, Bosh, Johnson, etc just re-sign with their team.

At times it seems very irresponsible and I wonder if this strategy has to do with Donnie’s age (67 years old), who just want’s a quick fix, since he’s really not going to be here for the long haul

All this talk of 2010 strategy get’s boring, specially when you consider that Donnie already deviated from the plan by not trading Nate & Jeffies to Sacto last season. Now this season it probably cost of the 5th pick, cause he kept trying to push Jeffries on to the Wizards.

I don’t know, it just seems frustrating at times, the lack of activity in the name of 2010.

  • Magik_Trick

I think were PLAYOFF contenders, as in competing for the 7th or 8th seed, championship, definetly not..

And I think there are better options to go after for our PG next season..

I doubt most of these will accept 6 mill but
    Sessions, Bibby, Miller….you never know

  • EQ1217

How can we be playoff contenders, when after career years from Nate, Lee, Harrington, Duhon, and Chandler we still only one 32 games?

This season Lee and Nate probably won’t even be here, who is going to replace their numbers? Darko, Curry, Hill, Douglas?

Unless Gallo avgs like 15pts and Chandler develops into an All-Star, maybe we have a chance.

  • joetheknick

I share your frustration, but I don’t think looking to 2010 is the problem. I think everyone agrees we need cap space. A veteran like Nash will provide leadership which will hopefully translate to more wins this coming year. Progress was lost last year with an injured Gallinari. Otherwise it was a year of the players learning to play as a team. The team could not close out games. The team was very porous defensively. We need a go to guy to close out games. We need more experience and better personnel to protect the paint. Hopefully Hill and Milicic will be improvements. Not clear who the go to guy is going to be. I agree that we need a young point guard who emerges to be a star for the future. Maybe a sign and trade of Nate will produce such a player. I lot of moving parts.

  • joetheknick

While Bibby and Miller have made more of an impact are either that much better than Duhon. You could make a case that Sessions has more potential then Duhon. I would rather go with a Sessions or a Bayless and hope they become stars in this league. But it will take time.

Long time reader first time poster…if we trade hughes/mobley for tmac then kidd makes alot more sense…i dont want to give another lotto pick away next year and it would be nice to compete…i also have a pretty good 3 way for rubio that works for everyone…lee and nate to portland 2 of outlaw/webster/fernandez to minnesota rubio to the knicks…fillers to make the cap work…then portland packages oden and aldridge for stoutmire…portland looks like blake, roy, outlaw or webster, lee and stoutmire…i think that lineup would compete for a championship…what do you think…would you do it

  • Magik_Trick

    Simply because…were in the east

Detroit made the playoffs with 39 wins, if we had won just 7 more games last season, we would have been in the playoffs..

We got bigger, we got better defensively, added some shot blockers..

Our offensive system alone is gonna get us 105 ppg, if we just allow less than that, were a playoff team..

  • Charles

So i guess we are giving up on Rubio, which isnt a suprise. But why do we need kidd he is 37 years old and wont want to come here because there is no go to guy on this team. He needs stars or good veterans around him, which we have neither of

  • Chris3035

Also i think that a lineup of Kidd(1 year 5 mil) Tmac(for mobley/Hughes) Chandler Harrington Curry(in shape(untill he gets traded) would be enough to win a playoff series. and for me that would be nice to see…we wouldnt be morgaging the future or messing up 2010 and we also would give up anoter lotto pick this year(for marbury…he doesnt stop hurting us)

  • Charles

We have no pick next year utah has it

  • Chris3035

that was my point…if we were competitive this year it wouldnt be a lotto pick…not that it matters but still…seeing the bulls get a #2 and a #9 hurt…giving another top pick would suck

  • Chris3035

meant to say the pick that we already gave for marbury would be in the teens or 20s and not the top 10…my bad

  • darkseid

No chance kidd plays here next year. It seems that walsh and dantoni are building our team with young and hungry players (insert your own eddy curry joke here lol)

Kidd is not a fit for us. In the past he has also shown to be a coach’s headache, just ask Byron Scott.

I’ll pass on one the the greatest pass first pgs ever.

    sorry

  • Bruno

S&T Nate for Kidd (2yr) & S.Williams? Kidd/Dunhon would be the perfect tutors for Douglas to learn the point.

IF Walsh is able to move Curry or jeffries then we’d have even less than the $18M in committed salary next year. Add $2.3 for Hill, plus ~$8 (hopefully) for Lee, $6 for Kidd and we’re at $22.3. That’s $34M we have coming off the books.

  • Bruno

Wow nevermined LOL! I didn’t mean to hit “send” yet LOL.
    But you catch my drift…

  • Bruno

I agree with Sessions 1, but I disagree about Miller. He’s borderline All-Star caliber, which is much better than Duhon. Between Kidd and Miller, I’d prefer Kidd but wouldn’t complain either way.

    Sign me up for Sessions.

  • Bruno

I’m all for Hughes for T-Mac too. We don’t need Hughes, and although T-Mac will be out the Jan and possibly the year he should be a stud in this system with this team.

  • Chris Alvino

If we can ditch JJ in a deal for him, I think Kirk Hinrich would be a great fit at point for us. He has a Steve Nash feel to his game if you ask me. His career path would be similar as well. He is a great shooter, a good passer, and has been a pretty good player thus far in his career.

If the Bulls re-sign Gordon, then Hinrich will likely get dealt. Not sure if JJ is what they want, but he could be good for us.

  • joetheknick

Chris: I am a big Hinrich fan but the deal your suggesting would through the getting under the cap plan all out of wack. Hinrich averages 9 m per year through 2011-2012. The deal would work if you are willing to sign and trade Lee who will command that kind of compensation for those kind of years. We need a PG. Is he worth it?

  • Mucha

He’s not the way to go. Maybe a one-year rental but I can’t see that happening.

  • Chris Alvino

He will get closer to 8 million in the 2010-11 season. If Jeffires, scheduled to make close to 6.8 that season, is dealt, then Hinrich would be only 1.2 mm more on the cap. For a 15 and 6 starting PG that wil play over 30 mpg, then I am all for adding the extra salary. If DW can add a piece this year, then add a max FA and a second tier player next summer, then I am thrilled. DW will not sign two max FAs next summer. One is enough, along with another good player for closer to 8 mm per season.

Trading Jeffries is a key this off-seaon. With the new additions to the front line, JJ’s spot becomes even more cloudy on this team. Perhaps the Bobcats take him for Bell. That would be an ideal trade for us.

By the way, for Eddy Curry, I would gladly swap his contract for Mike Dunleavy or Gerald Wallace if either team was interested. If Wilson chandler is dealt, Wallace can fill his spot well.

  • Qaspec

I like Hinrich also but I don’t beleive that Nash is a fair comparison. There are differences…Hinrich is a good (streaky) shooter who can get a jump shot of a lil easier than Nash, Hinrich is also a better defender than Nash on the ball. He’s a lil stronger but he’s not as fast. What made Nash special for Dantoni was his court vision and this is where their games change enough that you can’t accuratley predict Hinrichs success if he played in “Seven Seconds or Less” (SSL).

I would argue that Kidds vision and fast decision making would make him more successful in SSL than Hinrich despite his advanced age. I aslo beleive thats why Dantoni wants Rubio. It’s not the fancy passes, it’s the vision, feel and foresight that makes those passes possible.

Someone also said 2010 Free Agent Plan was a “Quick Fix”….I want to know where they’ve been for the last 7 years! The trading of draft picks and expiring contracts to bring in old players, players with bad contracts and injured players were the quick fixes that caused this mess. The 2010 plan is a deliberate, specific plan of action and rebuilding that this team needed sice Patrick Ewing was traded away.

  • Qaspec

I would gladly trade Eddy Curry for a Shake and Bake t-shirt…(“That just happened”)

  • Assistant DA

Clearly, Coach and his brother are from the Valley of the Sun and should have a good scouting report on players from AU. The Knicks had a chance to draft Bayless during last years draft and passed. Bayless said many of the same things during the 2008 draft process as Curry did this year about wanting to play for Coach and his admiration of Nash. The big difference was the response of the Knicks front office… Portland is dying for a PG with a solid BB IQ and a consistent three point shoot to play along side Brandon Roy. I believe Bayless was third on the teams depth chart. i hope in time Bayless proves my take wrong and develops into an all star player.

  • joetheknick

Chris: your entitled to your opinion but Hinrich will get 9.0 m in 2010 with a year after that. Jeffries will get 6.8 m in 2010 and he is done. I believe Jeffries can be moved to a play off team by taking back expiring contracts. I am more concerned that some GM offers Lee a ridiculously high contract and forced a sign and trade. We will see how it plays out. I would rather have Lee than Hinrich. That is my bottom line.

  • barnaby8787

Everyone keeps talking about sessions and that’s great and all b/c I like sessions and he might be available due to the bucks drafting jennings and having ridnour there, but honestly, there’s still others out there that we maybe could snag. Indiana has t.j.ford and they also drafted aj price, so jarrett jack may be expendable. Also, raymond felton may be expendable now that augustin proved himself as a rookie. Both are solid point guard who put up good numbers last year. And then obviously, there’s nash…

  • barnaby8787

By the way, i’ll pass on hinrich.

  • bmathews77

Jason Kidd is not going to the Knicks. He’s trying to get a championship. That being said, he’s not going to Portland either because they’re not ready to win one.
I doubt he goes to the LA Lakers because they’re strapped for cash because they need to sign Lamar Odom and Trevor Ariza more than an aging Jason Kidd.
If Jason Kidd goes anywhere other than resigning with Dallas its to San Antonio, Cleveland, or Boston
