Pistons Get Their Guys

by Chris Alvino on July 1st, 2009 at 9:37 pm

As rumored, the Pistons have signed free agent guard Ben Gordon to a 5 year, 55 million dollar deal and free agent power forward Charlie Villanueva to a 5 year, 40 million dollar deal. Gordon had yet another good playoff series against the Celtics this past season, a season in which he again led the Bulls in scoring. Villanueva really came into his own once Michael Redd and Bogut went down. He took on a much bigger scoring role on the team, averaging over 16 ppg in just over 26 mpg. That is scoring at a fast pace.

Truthfully, if my team had $19 million in cap space, I am not sure I’d be thrilled with these two deals. I think both got overpaid to a certain extent. Maybe not Gordon, but I do not see Villanueva as an $8 million dollar player in this market. He is a high volume shooter that is more of a chucker than a premier scoring threat. He does not shoot for a good percentage and he has never seen a shot that he didn’t like. Villanueva is a good perimeter defender and a good outside shooter, but he is not a great shot-blocker and is not a great rebounder. Not for his size.

Both players are primarily scorers. Ben Gordon is the type of tough player that Joe Dumars has been seeking to add to his core.

Boozer not opting out hurt, but they would not have been able to sign both Gordon and Boozer to deals. All in all, I am not thrilled with the use of the cap space, but I do like it somewhat. Both players can turn out to be big time players for the Pistons.

As for Villanueva receiving $8 million per season, I am not sure what that will do for Lee’s price. He is a better all-around player than Villanueva. Does this mean that Lee is a $10 million player? One good thing is that this takes Detroit out of the running for Lee. Just like in Memphis, Lee has lost one of his only potential suitors. I am starting to believe that Lee is coming back, and coming back at a favorable price.

    Yes. Yes. Yes!

  • KBT1615

No I want something off of Lee now…I have coped with him leaving He is leaving…Unless we get Rudy in a trade with Nate then I am alright I just want a 2 guard or a really good player going into this next season, Do You Blame Me?
    When can S&T start?

  • EQ1217

There really aren’t many teams even to do S&T were Lee can be a starter. Just quickly glancing, maybe the Bulls, Nets, Pacers, Heat and Warriors.

As long as OKC is after Millsap, we can be in the drivers seat as far as S&T or keeping him at a lower cost

  • CircleLimit4

So who else might be interested? OKC. Houston? Dallas? Nets? Nuggets?

Has there been any word on Birdman?

  • greatman42001

I don’t think you can compare Villanueva to Lee in terms of money basically they are hoping Villaneuva will be a young Rasheed Wallace, people used to say a few years ago that Rasheed Wallace never saw a shot he didn’t like but eventually he grew as a player and learned his zone. In terms of Gordon they are hoping he could be a younger version of Billups which is a bad way of thinking. Obviously Dumars wants to build his team like the one that won a few years ago but in my opinion it’s a mistake… If the team couldn’t win last year with those players this team which is the Pistons of 05 lite won’t win either…. plus isn’t it risky to sign all of these players without having a coach in place??

  • greatman42001

Memphis is out of the running I can’t believe they just traded for Zach Randolph oh my god!
Randolph straight up for Q Rich… Memphis GM just took Dunleavy’s place for hands down worst gm ever!

  • IDunnoMyName

The ironic thing is these two players would have thrived under Flip Saunders. I think Dumars is significantly overrated.

  • Bart

Knicks should throw Lee 5.5 mil per that sounds about right in this economy factoring his “desire” to be a Knick.

  • CircleLimit4

Watch Detroit get another Husky in Josh Boone or Hilton Armstrong.

  • Jeff Cykiert

What does this mean for Rip?

And can we still get Rubio? Are we giving up? This is just what Kahn wants… but in the long run, he’s a moron if he doesn’t trade him because the kid won’t play there, period.

  • Magik_Trick

He would say “NO” to that offer in a New York minute..

  • KBT1615

Any more rumors about The Heat and Beasley?slim chance that works…an other players we could look at?

  • KBT1615

Trading Block. just no clue where?

  • IDunnoMyName

Lee’s agent is looking for a deal that is not coming. He is playing hard ball and, barring a total change of character and spending philosophy in Memphis, he is going to end up blinking first. I thought the Grizzlies might be an intriguing S&T partner with Rudy Gay, but seeing as though they just picked up Z-Bo that is out the window.

Where does he possibly go now?

  • greatman42001

It looks like a race between the Grizz and the Pistons to become Uconn lite
    Grizz- Gay, Thabeet Adrien

    Pistons- Rip Villanueva

Maybe Pistons will sign Calhoun to coach the team thus completing their transformation into Uconn

  • greatman42001

And not to forget Gordon to go with the Villanueva and Rip

  • Chris Alvino

I wonder what happens with Rip. I think he’d be a good fit here to bring some credibility back to this team. Much like Walsh is looking for in Kidd and Hill, Rip is a proven championship caliber veteran player.

What about Al Harrington for Rip?

  • BiggieSmalls

It will be interesting what the next move is.

Lee’s options have been cut with Memphis out of it.

I think Ute matches Milsap and tries to trade Boozer in season

So OKC is still ou tthere.. Otherwise does Donnie come back with 4 years and a 30 some million dollar offer. WIth an opt out after three?

Lee’s agent has been playing hard ball in the media about him getting paid so it would be a little crow eaten if he has to “settle” for under Charlie V’s deal.

It’s more of a buyers market tonite.

  • BiggieSmalls

With Real Madrid getting into the game Kahn may have overplayed whatever hand he had.

He may not have been expecting bigtime offers from Euro teams who are not restricted in paying the DKV buyout.

  • greatman42001

You have got to be kidding right now Chris, Rip Hamilton for Al Harrington??? A very good shooter and defender as well as team player, and winner with leadership for a ball hog who plays no D, and yells at coaches when he is unhappy and who is a clone of Charlie Villanueva the player they just signed. It means nothing for Rip Hamilton that these players were just signed, they want Gordon to be their next Billups a scoring PG who they can hope can develop into a passer and a leader…Gordon played a lot of point at Uconn
    their starting 5 will be
    PG- Gordon
    SG- Rip
    SF: Prince
    PF: Villanueva
    C: TBD

  • Chris Alvino

Pistons’ fans are not thrilled about these moves and I do not blame them. For 19 million per season, neither player is an all-star Gordon is closer, but he is not a premier player on a team. I do not see him being the best player on a championship team. If they keep Prince, then their three highest paid players will be more of role players than top tier players.

  • greatman42001

Fans werent’ happy with Billups either, they said he was a role player who could score and look what what happened there… Gordon has some Billups in him.

  • CircleLimit4

I think the signings are good overall for the Pistons, I’m just surprised they didn’t get a moose down low and went for another SG in Gordon. I thought it would have been Birdman instead of Gordon.

Whatever I’m just glad Cleveland didn’t get Charlie V.

  • Bruno
  • EQ1217

Ben Gordon, scoring PG? I don’t think so. Rip will be on the market, he’s a 31 SG with a 36 million dollar contract left.

Harrington would have value to Detriot only because of his expiring contract

  • greatman42001

Gordon played a lot of point at Uconn.. Many projected him to play PG in the NBA but with the Bulls having Hinrich it never really happened… Dumars loves scoring point guards he had one in Billups and kind of played with one in Isiah Thomas and he tried to make Stuckey into one last year.
There is no way he makes this deal without believing that Gordon can play point guard for the team. Dumars will give him the oppurtunity to play point in the pre-season and the begining of the season before making any deal that involves Rip Hamilton… If he was so low on Rip he would of taken the offer that the pistons offered in Ray Allen and Rondo for Prince and Rip. Honestly I believe Gordon will flourish playing point making him a Billups lite although I believe Villanueva was a mistake.

  • Chris Alvino

Well he is the only piece we’d be able to trade. Not saying that it would happen.

  • Chris Alvino

You are right on one thing. The Pistons built a championship team with unheralded players coming into Detroit. Rip was not Rip when he went to Detroit. Billups was not Billups. Prince was a late first round find. Sheed was the missing piece, and while he was an all-star talent, he had a bad rep.

Perhaps this is the beginning of the next set of under-the-radar moves.

  • CircleLimit4

While I don’t think Gordon will be any better than he is now, I don’t think CV has reached his ceiling yet. I think he could def be a 20/10 guy. If the Pistons get a center, they will be dangerous.

  • Qaspec

The cap space the Knicks would save from allowing Lee to walk or the space they would save by not acquiring players in a sign and trade is more valuable in my opinion than getting guys that could potentially eat cap space, unless it’s a franchise player.

Sometimes not getting anything in return is a better value and letting a guy just walk is a better value.

  • KBT1615

Pass that….you are obviously on something and I want it. The Pistons have said numerous times they want Rodney Stuckey to be their PG of the future. And they didn’t do Rip and Prince and Allen and Rondo because they aren’t dumb and the want to keep prince.

  • Qaspec

The team added Hill, Darko and Douglas…hopefully Gallo comes back healthy, a 2nd year and another training camp with Dantoni for players in this system will be an improvement…despite draft night I think 7th/8th seed without adding to payroll in 2010 is a possibility

    C – Darko
    PF – Gallo
    SF – Chandler
    SG – Hughes
    PG – Duhon

    Bench
    Harrington
    Hill
    Jeffries
    Douglas

Gallo, Darko, Hill reaplce the rebounding and scoring while adding a lil shot blocking

Increased minutes for Hughes always helps a scrorer and Douglas will play well as a rookie I beleive (creating a 3 guard rotation to help keep Duhon from wearing down).

Again, without adding anything that team will run, run, run and I feel can be better than last year.

  • greatman42001

Haha yes your right the Pistons just signed a guy to 5 year 55 million dollar contract only to move their best player Rip Hamilton and they would do this because….??? Are you on something Rodney Stuckey over Rip Hamilton seriously?? Hmmm trade Rip Hamilton or bring Stuckey off the bench I’m pretty sure that’s a no brainer.

  • greatman42001

Exactly but it wasn’t like these players weren’t talented just hadn’t found the right system for them until that point…. People knew Billups had talent.. people knew Sheed and Rip had talent… Wallace and Prince not as much but you know sometimes thats how you have to build your team…. Dumars is taking a risk and sometimes you have to do that to be a playoff team… Gordon could really contribute on that team.. I also like what Detroit is doing in going after players now if they can… they realize they have an opening to compete this year with no other teams really willing to spend money on Free Agents since they are all waiting until next year. The only thing I am suprised is they are doing this all without a coach in place…. considering they want a vetern coach you would think that coach would of atleast liked to be asked about these player decisons I wonder if it will deter any coaches from coming… what do you think?

  • greatman42001

And if you don’t believe what i have to say I suggest you read John Hollinger’s article that was just put on the front page of ESPN.com that says he is the replacement for Billups.

  • harlemsdiplomat

  • KBT1615

OK guys the pistons are stacked at every position except Center and Guard soo how about a Nate and Hughes trade for Rip Hamilton…..Huh then try and grab a pick in Next Years Draft with Lee, Lance Stephenson is going to be a STAR….

  • bob go knicks

GORDON is not a point guard, hes like JAMAAL CRAWFORD shoot-shoot–shoot

  • Jeff Cykiert

    I figured it out!

RIP will get traded to the hornets. it’s just what chris paul needs. It’s what RIP needs too; he strives next to great PGs who know exactly when and where to find him.

  • bmathews77

Good signings for the Pistons however I think they over-paid for both players. Ben Gordon will be coming off the bench for them and he’s getting 5 year, 55 million dollar deal…sorry but thats starters money. And Charlie V is a decent scorer but he needs to work on the rest of his game – rebounding and blocking shots.

  • KBT1615

Bob stop replying to me I am really sick of you and your dumb comments.

  • KBT1615

There is plenty of articles saying Rip Hamilton is on the Block. Also Ben Gordon is not a freaking POINT GUARD.
Example when Kirk Hinrich was hurt he never played it when D Rose was sitting down, They would rather put Hughes at pg.

  • KBT1615

don’t see it they barely have anything to give and they are trying to get expirings.

  • bob go knicks

LISTEN MAN!you were the one who started all of this shit!just cuz i said

  • bob go knicks

WILSON CHANDLER wasnt gonna be that good.
