Report: Knicks Offer Kidd 3-Year Deal
By Ben Kopelman - Jul 3, 2009 1:20 pm

Update Tommy Dee: hoopsworld is reporting the Dallas has stepped up their offer and it appears Kidd will stay…

This coming out of the Daily News and beat writer Frank Isola:

“Jason Kidd will have to decide whether playing at Madison Square Garden is worth forfeiting $12million.

“That is approximately the difference in the three-year offers Kidd received from the Knicks and Dallas Mavericks. A person close to the veteran point guard confirmed that the Knicks presented Kidd with a three-year contract worth approximately $18 million Saturday. The Mavs offered Kidd a three-year contract worth between $25million and $30million.”

Kidd is expected to take his time making a decision, so don’t expect any real resolution before Wednesday at the earliest.

As I have stated since rumor #1, I’m not a fan of bringing Kidd in, but if he does land in NY, securing his services for the next three years makes more sense to me than just having him hang around as a single season rental…

I can understand Kidd for 1 year. To erase a “rental” image maybe I could see 2 years. But paying Kidd 6 million at age 39 just doesn’t sit well with me, especially if we don’t have a young true PG for him to mentor.

Does anyone think we should go after Shawn Marion? I know he plays 3 and we have lots of 3/4 on the team but he would give us another athlete and he had is best season under Mike D @ the MLE he would be good value.

guys the more i think of this …. its got very very little to do with talent ….
this is like the mets signing pedro martinez, only kid is even further into his twilight ….. this is about bringing back respect and credibility to the knicks organization ….
many people believe beltran, delgado and some other would not have signed with mets without the pedro signing …..
if big time stars like bron, wade, etc feel that a team signing a jason kidd shows more of a committment to winning, as opposed to signing a player like a ramon sessions… then so be it.. the sacrifice will be worth it

Good point, while Pedro never lived up to expectations, his presence made the Mets a contender in 06, and helped get the guys like Beltran and Delgado. Good comparison

I think players look at Kidd NOW and think “I would rather have Devin Harris on my team.” Sure players have respect for his performance in the path but the 2010 crop is not stupid. They want the quickest path to a ring without sacreficing their paycheck. Kidd’s deal might jeopardize both.

When the Mets got Pedro, he was fresh off a WS Ring and was in the Cy Young conversation. Kidd got eliminated in the second round in 5 games.

Sadly, I see the parallel to the Mets’ Pedro signing: They gave him four year contract and he lived up to about a year and a half of it. The advent of Pedro on the Mets had nothing to do with them bringing in Beltran, who wanted to play for the Yanks and in fact offered to play in the Bx for less money but the Yanks decided instead to (I think) resign Bernie Williams. Delgado declined to sign with the Mets as a FA (He signed with Florida) but was traded to the Mets the following season.

Kidd is just using the Knicks to get Cuban to up the ante. Ironically, the most selfless basketball player is quite a different guy off the court. I would be surprised if Kidd did anything but take the highest offer.

how much of a true point guard do we need anyway if we are able to snag a ‘10 star … especially Wade? if plays with the ball in his hands most of the game

Wade will stay in Miami though, and Bosh will probably go and play with him

I think that a lineup of kidd (with a rookie groomed under him), joe johnson, gallinari, jordan hill, and david lee wouldn’t be too bad.

eh johnson always rubbed me the wrong way after leaving a good phoenix team to sign with ATL … your lineup has joe johnson as our biggest star…
no way … we are the knicks …. get us the Marquee name donnieW
that lineup would be an utter fail imo

Kidd is valuble to the team as a player this year….in 2010 he becomes valuable as trade bait for a team forced to trade a good player due to financial reasons. At those numbers it’s a value. It’s really about having players signed at numbers that makes them valuable to other teams…and Kidd still has value around this league (leader, mentor)

That’s why I could do 2 years because we could use him as a rental then perhaps use his expiring as trade bait, but I doubt anyone in the league will want to pay Kidd when he’s practically 40 years old. He’s no Jordan.

Comment by Qaspec
2009-07-03 14:07:01

But it’s not much to pay at mid level numbers…plus even at 40 he would be valuable to a title contender as a role player, off the bench, leadership glue guy (at the MLE).

Well, if Kidd signs with Dalls then a Nash trade will prolly be plan B.

That’s true but isn’t the 18mil/3yr above MLE?

Regardless, I would prefer Nash. I just wish we didn’t have to trade for him, we might as well wait until 2010. But if Nash is the plan B for Kidd does that mean we’re not gonna even make a run for Sessions? Or even Jarret Jack or CJ Watson?

18 Mil is the MLE….it averages 6 mil for 3 years.

I wouldn’t say CJ watson. Another name to throw out though is raymond felton. I just feel like bringing out CJ watson is like bringing on duhon part II. Duhon had similar numbers to watson before he came to NY with one less point a game, but two more assists per game in 20+ minutes like watson. I’d definitely prefer sessions, jack, or felton.

Yeah, but I think the Cats like Felton and will keep him, plus, Felton doesn’t shoot well, Dantoni wants shooters

It’s questionable though only because they have augustin. In regards to his shooting, he shoots well from the field, just not from beyond the arc, but his passing abilities can’t be questioned. This year he averaged 14 points a game and nearly 7 assists a game; I feel like in d’antoni’s system that could turn into about 17 and 9, which would be great.

Even in Dantoni’s system when the team is in a halfcourt situation the team runs PG pick and roll at the top. That means the PG has to be able to hit 17-20 foot jumpers. Nash thrives doing that and Kidd has turned into a player that hits that shot. In an open court I agree Felton is dangerous but so are Kidd and Nash, it’s that ability to hit the J in the halfcourt that make Felton a little less valuable to the Knicks I think.

Watson is a better scorer and more explosive than Duhon and is only in his second year. I’m not saying Watson is the best choice, I would probably choose Felton over him. Watson could be had cheaper than Duhon and Felton though.

I agree, but i was just making the comparison that I don’t think he could do that much more than duhon is all; but yes, he is a cheaper option.

What about CJ Watson, have we considered him? We can’t looks at his averages because he didn’t get consistent minutes, but when he got good minutes he had some fantastic performances like his 38pt/9ast/7reb and a steal AT Utah towards the end of the season.

I don’t think Kidd even fits that much in the Knicks up pace tempo (sounds weird I know). But reallistically he is a big post up guard, doesn’t run as much, passes ahead for the fast break and has become a good outside shooter in halfcourt sets….his game now at this point actually reminds me of Derek Harper when he was with the Knicks.

I feel like sessions is plan B. Nash will most likely become plan C considering sessions can be signed as opposed to traded for if milwaukee doesn’t match our offer.

Normally that would be the case, but with Nash and Dantoni’s relationship and the Knicks starving for a leader, respected type player that puts Nash over Sessions in my opinion.

I feel like that’s overkill though. Signing a young point and then a veteran the following year to me feels kind of backwards. I feel like if we want nash, we should make a move for him and then next year, acquire a first rounder and draft a young point to groom under him.

Random though, but if we can trade for nash, I feel like we might want to spend our money on another shooting guard (offering less than an MLE). Maybe somebody like rashad mccants or even von wafer. I feel like they would be good additions for maybe 3-4 mil or so a year. That would leave our options open in regards to dealing hughes if he was wanted while also providing more depth at the 2.

I think Von Wafer would go for less than the MLE he mad like 500,000 last season 2 or 3 mill should be enough, he is really good.

Mccants is good, but may seem 1 dimensional. I love Von Wafer’s explosiveness and moxy, but he sometimes loses control. They are underrated contributors though.

I think they would be solid bench pieces but I’d hate to have 3-4 million prevent us from getting that something extra in 2010.
