Forget a reunion with Doc Rivers, Grant Hill will have to find another home.
Reports have surfaced that Rasheed Wallace, who along with Hill, as been courted by the Celts, will sign with Boston for the mid level exception for two years between 5,6 and 5.8 per year.
“…Wallace is expected to receive a two-year deal using the mid-level exception (expected to be about $5.6 million to $5.8 million).
The Celtics All-Star trio of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce, owner Wyc Grousbeck, coach Doc Rivers, and president Danny Ainge met with Wallace last week. Wallace turned down overtures from Orlando and San Antonio to commit to Boston.
The Celtics also have interest in Suns free agent forward Grant Hill. Despite a Fanhouse report that Rivers was to meet with Hill today in Orlando, its uncertain if he did and Rivers declined comment. All Boston can offer is the $1.9 million bi-annual exception…”
We’ll wait and see what happens with Jason Kidd, but if Kidd won’t sign for less, then Hill won’t sign for less with the Celts. I can’t imagine the Suns making a stink over the guy either, so you have to expect that Hill to the Knicks is a real possibility.

I can maybe understand bringing Kidd in as we do have a hole to fill at the 1, but why Hill? Why? If we’re dipping into 2010 cap space then it better be for more than just “veteran leadership.” Why stockpile another 3? It doesn’t make sense to me unless DW knows Chandler is going somewhere (Minnesota?)
Despite this being a good signing for the Celts, i’m excited about the possibility of have Grant Hill. There’s the Rubio possibility (just a hope), but he’s also a real solid consistent player, which the Knicks rarely have (except DLee). He would be a nice contributor for a team that hopefully makes the playoffs
moroldstuff
I like hill, but i hope he doesnt take minutes away from Danilo. But maybe he can start at the shooting guard. that would be great.
A lineup of
Duhon/Douglas
Grant Hill/Hughes
Wilson/Danilo
Harrington/Hill
Lee/Darko
Thats playoff potential…
Wheres Nate ?
Not on the knicks next year.
Hill isn’t much of a long range shooter, I think Chandler would be a better option at the 2.
But Hill is a much better ball handler and passer. plus chandler is bigger stronger and more athletic.
Wow the title contenders are really loading up. Lakers, Spurs, and Celtics look pretty good right now. I don’t think Shaq is going to do anything for the Cavs, but if he can slow down Dwight Howard that’s a big plus for them.
I think this move for the Celtics is greater than the Lakers picking up Artest. But I still like the Lakers overall talent better because they are younger.
Could you imagine taking it to the hole against Boston next season with Sheed and KG down there? Good sign for Boston. If they stay healthy (big if) then they own the east… Damn.
Off topic, but you probably would have figured:

PG focus turned to: ???
Give grant hill more credit than being a veteran leader. He’s a great player. Obviously not a star, but we’re talking MLE. He would be the best player on our team. He would be the only one who could ever come close to any triple doubles, with assist and rebound totals approaching 10 on many nights. He also is a very smart player and knows the system to a T. If we’re talking a mid-level exception, and we are looking for someone to guide us in the right direction, i couldn’t be happier.
Don’t worry about him taking time away from galo and wilson, Both of those guys can play multiple positions, as can Harrington. There’s no reason to think that the three of them can’t share the floor productively.
If we were going to get one good veteran to have around in order to mix some balance and leadership in with our youth, so that the roster could be complete for whatever FA we sign, Grant Hill sounds like the guy to me. If we get LeBron or someone like that, we need more than a bunch of young developing players. I have always loved grant hills game; he would be perfect.
Jeff come on. Grant Hill will not be the best player on the Knicks. Not at age 36. 14 years ago yes. A few ankle surgeries ago most def. If he joined the team tomorrow he’s maybe the 5th best player.
Nate’s the best scoring guard/game changer. Harrington is the best scorer. Wilson is the best 2 way player. Gallinari is the best shooter. Lee is the best rebounder/most efficient scorer.
Grant Hill can do a little bit of everything but he can’t do any one thing at the level than any of those guys can anymore. Not at 36. And as for him being the ONLY ONE who would come CLOSE to a triple double…you must’ve not seen Nate Robinson play last year.
Go on ESPN.com and compare their game logs from ‘08-’09 and see who was better in that department. For some reason this blog isn’t letting me post the URLs.
I’ll save you the trouble of having to compare every game. Just compare their assist/rebound averages from month to month. Now check out Nate’s statline from the game he had on 2/11 vs. the Clippers.
Can you find a game where Hill came close to a performance like that?
Now think about this. One guy is 36, the other is 25. Which is more likely to be on the decline next year, and which is just starting to hit his stride in the league?
I’ll pass on Grant Hill right now. As a veteran sage fine, but as a major rotation player hell no. All he’ll do is take away minutes from our young players. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of the Knicks bringing in former stars who are way past their prime.
Kiki Vandeweghe, Mo Cheeks, Steve Francis, Antonio Mc Dyess, Xavier McDaniel. Enough is enough.
Did anyone else read that we were interested and Big Baby? I duno, our front court isn’t too depleted any more, i don’t see why we would need him. But i guess him at 3 or 4 million is better than Lee at 10 million, so if we lose Lee maybe i could see that.
BB Davis’ jumper at the elbow that he loves would be a great tool for D’Antoni’s system, but I wonder if he would be able to get up and down the court with the run and gun. He’d be a good bench player for when we’re forced into a game of half court set ups, but I’m not sure if he’s needed. I don’t think he could fill Lee’s shoes at all.
Why would the knicks go after G. Hill when there are better options available for the MLE.
When Toronto signs Turk, they will have to renounce their Bird rights to all their free agents to fit him under the cap.
Marion seems like the perfect fit for this team with our MLE. Unless Portland makes a run at him, nobody else can pay him more.
He is a great defender, can play the 3 or 4 (which he played in Phoenix), can block shots, steal passes, rebound, shoot and score. He can mentor the young forwards at both forward positions and, obviously, knows and thrived in the D’Antoni system and is only 31 years old. Both had their best years together.
Toronto can no longer facilitate a sign and trade for him, so that avenue is closed. Unless I’m missing some team with a ton of cap room, he will have to settle for the money available.
It also allows us the flexibility to trade D Lee, Harrington or Chandler if the right deal comes along.
Makes more sense than Grant for the money!
would love to see marion over hill…
Marion won’t sign for the MLE. No shot.
I’d rather see odom over marion over hill….
Neither is ODom for that matter. I think Odom yo Orlando at the MLE would make more sense.
Even though it’s only an MLE, I honestly don’t think they will chris. They already have two large contracts in VC and rashard and D12 is a free agent in 2011, so they probably want to work out an extension next year which will cost them an arm and a leg. Not to mention that they still might want to dip into free agency next year as well.
would love to see odom over marion over hill…
Marion over Hill would be great but i doubt marion is accepting a mid level offer.
Who are all these better options that are available at the MLE? Name one, please.
Grant Hill is better than everyone on our team at everything they do besides their one specialty. Galo is a better shooter, that’s it. Lee is a better rebounder, that’s it. Grant hill can play at a high level in all areas and lead our team and make our young players better and it would only be for a MLE. And despite what some people chose to believe, there is no one else available at that price.
Yea, Nate has star qualities and is in his prime so obviously is capable of having ridiculous statistical games, but he is detrimental to the team over-all, anyone who cannot see that has forgotten about the entire season last year, and the reason why everyone is so anxious to get rid of him. He is a worse version of Allen iverson, and if you can come up with ANY way of argueing against that then please enlighten me. an undersized, low IQ, bad teammate who can do nothing besides dominate the ball and score alot. How can you be on his nuts now i just don’t get it.
Lamar Odom…
You seem to be a bit out of your mind.
This is crazy. Nate was one of the top 3 scorers in the NBA after the All Star Game last year up until March. He was 3rd behind Kobe and LeBron.
He was the favorite for Sixth Man Of The Year thru March, and all of a sudden it’s time to give up on him? Nate is one of the few players on this team to get better every year he’s been in the league. Last year was the first time he FINALLY played in a system that played to his strengths. You don’t give up on guys like that. You develop them.
Everyone wants the quick fix.
He’s immature, so what? He’s 25. You discipline him. I think all this talk of him getting traded out of here is a wake up call, and he’ll get his act together. Nate reminds me of Denver’s J.R. Smith.
He’s a bit of a knuckle head (Nate is nowhere near as bad), but he’s come a long way in the last few years. Imagine if Denver gave up on him in ‘06? He wouldn’t have been able to grow into one of the game’s best Sixth Men.
Nate’s a game changer. A tempo changer. At 36 the only thing Grant Hill’s changing is the ice packs on his ankles after the game.
Unfortunately, we are not getting Odom for the mid-level exemption. The Lakers are!
Too bad you only get one MLE and they used theirs on ron artest
Name a team, other than Portland, that can afford to pay more than 5.6 million? That was my point. Other than Portland, he has no other options.
I’m not knocking Hill. Like his game and I think he would command respect. But the fact is, he is 36 years old and has had many injuries in his younger days. How long can his body last?
i should have said “a better option”; that being Marion.
Again, Lamar Odom > Shawn Marion
Lakers do not have to use MLE for Odom. THey can match other’s offers to him. Again, Portland is the only team that can offer more than MLE. LA will certainly match any MLE offer and maybe any offer from Portland too.
They’re way over the luxury tax threshhold any way. What’s a few more millions to them?
Ok, one prob there buddy, obviously the lakers aren’t using the MLE due to artest. But they can’t match offers considering he’s a UFA not an RFA. And who says portland wants odom? Just because they were pursuing tukoglu, doesn’t mean they want odom also. They could be more focused on someone like D. Lee at this point.
Didn’t think that Portland would, but they are the only one’s who could. I think he will be offered the MLE from someone else.
I think that LA still maintained their Bird rights to Odom and he has said that he wants to stay in LA. Since they didn’t sign a free agent other than the MLE, I don’t believe that they had to relinquish those rights.
I could be wrong.
the way it seems is there are:
hill
marion
lee
teams with cap space:
portland
if la decides to jump in, then odem prob becomes available.
good odds.
Hill would get the same offer that Marbury got from the Celtics the vet minimum, and hes gonna be the best player on the team next year? get outta here. If Grant Hill is the best player on your team your franchise is in trouble and I don’t buy that Vet leadership stuff with Grant Hill what has he done lately? Nothing that I can recall hes a high character guy but hes not gonna lead the Knicks any where.
Odom and Marion are both out of the question at the Mid Level for us. We’re not looking for a guy to be an allstar and Lead our team to victory, we’re just looking to add some leadership to the lineup. What has he done lately? He played 82 games last year and played very well, especially at the end of the season. He knows the system, knows the game, is a versatile player who can play point forward at times if he needs to, and there is not one other player available at the price besides young guys who will make no difference.
What does the celtics’ cap room have to do with how good grant hill is? They only have 1.9 to offer, so that means Grant Hill isn’t good? I’m missing your logic. So far the only person on our team you can say is better than him is Nate Robinson, and hate to break it to you but Nate is detrimental to the team, and anyone who watched the Knicks last year is itching to get rid of him. If we replaced Nate with Grant Hill we would be a much better team. A starting Lineup with Duhon, Grant Hill, Chandler, and Lee sounds like a playoff team.
All you have done is rip on grant hill and suggest we get Lamar Odom, which is not even remotely possible at the MLE, so please provide me with a better option instead of just saying Grant Hill isn’t a good one.
“Replacing” Nate with Grant Hill is Mo Cheeks for Rod Strickland all over again. It’s Marcus Camby and Nene for Antonio Mc Dyess all over again. When will the Knicks ever learn? It seems like Ground Hog Day with this team. Let’s replace a 25 yr old rising star, with a 36 yr old who’s biggest accomplishment in the last few years is that he made it through an 82 game season without injury on his surgically reconstructed ankles. A guy who’s never been out of the first round of the playoffs.
I rather take my chances with a young guy like Nate, who’s got at least 7-10 yrs left, than a guy like Hill who is literally standing on his last legs.
