First Impression: Jordan Hill

by Chris Alvino on July 15th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

With two summer league games in the rear view mirror, let’s talk a bit about who we hope to be a big time player for the Knicks, Jordan Hill.

During the pre-draft process, Hill was widely regarded as a top 5 talent. Some people, such as Jeff Goodman, were not as high on Hill as others. Goodman believes that in a strong draft, Hill would project in the latter half of the 1st round. Goodman feels as though Hill will be a good active big man off the bench, not an Amare or a Chris Bosh.

Well, after two games, let’s start to think about a few things. Let’s start with the positives. First, Hill proved in just two days that he can hit a jumper from at least twenty feet away from the rim. His shooting ability was touted leading up to the draft and he showed that he has a nice touch. Hill also showed that he can be an active rebounder. Despite not being in shape, there were certain possessions where Hill fought for loose balls, even to the point where he ended up on the ground for them. David Lee is a good rebounder, a better one than Hill. But Hill has different rebounding skills. Hill’s athletic ability allows him to keep balls alive and to tap balls away from opponents. Third, Hill proved that he can run the floor. When he gets into better shape, he will be able to keep up even better.

Now let’s hit the negatives because I feel these are more important to address. First, Hill has been regarded as a good shot-blocker, but I did not see it. Hill might be a good weak side shot-blocker, but I do not see him patrolling the middle and swatting away lay-ups from opposing guards. Perhaps Hill’s heavy legs kept him from dominating the paint defensively, but I did not see his premier shot-blocking skills. Despite people already labeling him a bust, I could at least see Hasheem Thabeet’s shot-blocking instincts. That is not to say that Hill has to be a premier shot-blocker in the pros. Even if he does just excel as a weak side help defender, we can use that desperately.

Second, Hill fell in love with his jumper a bit too much for my liking. Against the Pistons today, I am not sure if he attempted to set up on the blocks like he did yesterday. I’m sorry but while Hill is a good shooter, he is not Danilo Gallinari out there. Hill has to work an inside-outside game. Living out on the perimter or in the mid-range will hurt Hill. Hill has to be versatile with his offensive repertoire.

To that effect, Hill’s interior game can use some work, but overall I thought he was effective there against the Grizzlies. He falls away from the hoop on his post moves, but so do a lot of guys. Of course I’d love to see him attack his defenders and attack the rim, but if he can hit the fade away, then so be it.

Third, going back to defense, Hill has to be more active defensively. He looked tired and lazy on some defensive possessions. The frustrating part (not that frustrating considering it is only the summer league) is that on other possessions, he shows what he can do defensively. He can close passing lanes with his athleticism and his length. He can come from the weak side and swat a shot. He can move laterally with his opponent. I think his potential as a defensive player is high, but potential means nothing if Hill does not work to realize that potential.

Fourth, Hill has to bulk up. He is just simply not strong enough to handle the NBA on a nightly basis. Not as a full-time starter at least. I am not concerned about that though. He is only 21 and he has the frame that can withstand some extra bulk. Give that time.

Fifth, Hill has not shown that he can pass out of the post yet. Perhaps he did once or twice, but I have not seen an impressive post move followed by a pass out to man on the perimeter. And I am not talking about the basic inside-outside pass that leads to the PG simply getting the ball back at the three point line. I want to see Hill find an open man ready to shoot the ball (i.e. Morris Almond). To his defense, Hill has not had many opportunities to do this, so I will give him the pass.

Overall, Hill has shown skills thus far. Despite his sluggish play, he has put up decent numbers and has had some good stints. Hill has to get into shape and has to bulk up before training camp. Like most rookies, Hill will not likely see much court time to start the year. He will eventually grown into a role and hopefully earn his spot in the rotation. When he does get into the rotation and he is playing with other legit NBA players, I am sure that his tendency to shoot from the perimeter constantly and his sluggishness will wear off and he will become the player that we all expect. Make no mistake, he has all the tools to be a great player. He can shoot. He is tall. He is athletic. He has room to bulk up. The tools are there.

Regardless of whether or not Hill develops into a star player, he showed me thus far that he will at least be a useful player. When he is on the floor, you generally notice him because he is an active guy.

Despite being overshadowed by Darrell Arthur yesterday, and Austin Daye and DeJuan Summers today, there is reason to hope with Hill. He does not look as polished as those three players, but sometimes the most polished players are not the best players.

Thoughts?

I think of Drew Gooden when I watch him play.

While we hear all of the talk about him not having his legs under him yet, I don’t think he’ll ever be an above the rim type of player. He has okay athleticism but that’s about it. The Amare comparisons need to stop (D’Antoni needs to stop comparing our players to his old ones..I won’t get started on that b/c it drives me nuts).

This was a weak draft and the Knicks drafted two decent players. Douglas will obviously be able to contribute before Hill does. I think Hill will be a good rebounder (8-10rpg throughtout his career) with a decent jumper, much like Gooden. Even though he blocked shots in college, I don’t think he”ll be a “shot blocker” in the NBA. He just doesn’t have the instincts. Marcus Williams converted a couple of easy layups on him and he didn’t even flinch.

He does get after the ball though. His offensive and defensive game has a long way to go. We won’t know til 3-4 years later.

  • J_Starks3

I agree with every single point you make with the one exception being that he has no excuse to NOT be in basketball shape. He does look a little lethargic out there. He should have outplayed every big man that he has guarded so far. I most admit that it is a little scary to see Darrell Arthur really dominate him. Sure Arthur has 1 year of NBA experience under his belt but still. Someone should do a post like this about Douglas who I am really excited about. Our point guard of the future!!!

  • KBT1615

WOW Where is the J Hill love, It will take less than 3 or 4 years to see. And there are plenty of excuses not to be in shape, especially with the track record ATTACK has.

  • J_Starks3

What is ATTACK’s track record????????? And what are the other excuses????? And why are the other rookies in basketball shape and he is not?????

  • CircleLimit4

They should get John Basedow to be the physical conditioning director and use Fitness Made Simple. It’s made for real people. It’s changing real lives.

  • KBT1615

they were supposed to get Eddy in shape last year and he came overweight…Plus you can tell either he doesn’t care about the summer league that much or he is a little out of shape, he is moving and reacting different.

  • SirOak

throughout the course of reading your take on Jordan Hill’s first two games, i couldn’t help but see “Eddy Curry” every other line of the text

he’s sluggish, not in shape, not a particularly good shot blocker, doesn’t use his size well

but of course.. it’s two games into SUMMER league.. so what do we really know after all

just not feeling too high on Mr. Hill right now

  • KBT1615

Berman is an Idiot. He is taking these Summer League Games tooo serious.
Everyone is all happy about seeing the real PG in Toney and he is focusing on the bad shooting..He even wants Curry to get more Minutes this year because he thinks he can help..

  • Magik_Trick

I think were expecting too much of Jordan Hill, especially at a #8 overall pick value…i know, thats high pick, but in previous years the best you get from a #8 pick is a significant role player, sounds like SOME of you are expecting superstar

    2000 – Jamaul Crawford
    2001 – Desagna Diop
    2002 – Nene Hilario
    2003 – TJ Ford
    2004 – Rafael Aruajo
    2005 – Channing Frye
    2006 – Rudy Gay*
    2007 – Brandan Wright
    2008 – Joe Alexander

I mean, theres always exceptions, guys who got picked later and became great superstar-potential players(like i think TD will be), but as for Jordan Hill I just see a very nice role player, run the floor, rebound, and score.
Craigamus83 draws the comparison of Drew Gooden, and thats exactly what I expect, maybe a bit more. I hope people werent expecting him to go into summer league and put up 20, 12, and 2blocks, like what he did in college. And alot of guys say “well, he says he wants to be great!”, yeah, and so did Kwame Brown, Darko Milicic, Sam Bowie, and others..If he truly wants to be great we’ll see how he shows up for training camp..

  • NY_TJ

I’m not to worried about the fitness level he’s at right now because there is in shape for the nba then there’s in shape for this system. He might look out of shape right now but I think it has a lot to do with the system and the fact they were running two a days. It will come and SirOaK dont worry the big difference between Curry and hill is that hill has a track record of working hard and everything we hear from the coaching staff and we see in the game says he’s got a active body. I think Hill thought he was getting in to good shape and now is realizing and had his eyes opened a bit to see what kind of shape he needs to be in. we’ll see

  • nyk_realist

channing frye meets renaldo balkman, if we’re lucky….and most definitely off the bench for his entire career.

  • gilcher82

    +1, thumbs up

  • bockersORbriefs

instead of frye meeting balkman, how’s about Donnie meeting N8 & D-Lee’s agents and making a DEAL for 2 legitimate NBA ballers NOW ! No issue with conditioning or scoring with either of those guys. With them we have birds in the hand …. but we continue to go after pie in the sky !!!

  • manners

R U serious?????…… After two games and maybe three practices??!! Your going to start dissecting a player. Let the dude get into some kid of shape. He already told you that he wasn’t in shape and he signed his contract less than a week ago.

  • mk218377

i see our two rookies as 6th and 7th guys in a deep rotation. you gotta be deep to contend. i like the Gooden comparison but i dont think you have to look farther then the last good knicks team and at kurt thomas. hill flashed athleticism in college so the idea is a more athletic kurt thomas. kurt was a good 14 and 9 every night for the knicks, who wouldnt sign for that right now in j hill.
one quick point on our restricted floaters. if we lose lee and/or nate i hope donnie has a plan to replace those 33 points and 15 boards a night.

  • KBT1615

Dont worry about it just remember their names and copy and paste their comments somewhere and when J Hill proves them wrong call them out…

  • bob go knicks

there is no excuse for a player drafted as highas hill, and then signing his contract,to not be in tip top condition for his first taste of every ballers dream,a chance to play NBA basketball.how anyone can work their whole hoops life toward the goal to play big league ball and show up out of shape is shameful

  • bob go knicks

i wouldnt worry about “ghostface douglas” he plays great dee-fense and everthing else …the shooting will come

  • Myles A. Mills

    nice scouting report there chris..

and you guys are really exaggerating hill’s lack of fitness. the kid is in great shape he’s just winded. Today especially, on a back to back. He’s not in bad shape; He definitely shouldn’t be compared to Eddy Curry. Hill’s also proven he’s a good offensive rebounder which I like. It’s contradictory to say he’s out of shape but he’s active. Curry never wanted to be great, Hill repeatedly said he wants to become one of the best, and coaches and scouts will second that. I want TD to show me some offense, but I’m loving the distributing. His defense has been solid, not game changing, but he gambles too much.

    But he’s in Vegas, right?

  • Myles A. Mills

just to address this channing frye nonsense….frye was a much better shooter than hill, unathletic, a subpar reboudner, terrible interior defender, and all around bitch. no offense channing.

hill is tough, athletic, explosive, a good defender, and a player who is JUST tapping into his offensive potential. He needs players to set him up because he’s not too versatile of an offensive player. When he gets to the big leagues he’ll play better. Just like TD who needs players to pass to. They’re not playing with the actual Knicks. Hill’s going to look better playing with David Lee etc.

  • bob go knicks

    I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE

  • JR

Thank you Myles, you saved me a lot of time typing there, great posts

please people, stop jumping to conclusions…its been 2 summer league games, its not even pre-season (emphasis on the not even pre-season part)

now is the time for those of us who only got to see hill play a few games last year to see the guy in action, note on what he has done well and may need to improve on, its not the time to complain that he isn’t good enough, or that he is amazing. remember its the summer league, don’t expect hill to play the same way just like you cant expect 10 assists a game from douglas, watch, enjoy, comment, converse, report, but dont jump to conclusions this early.

  • bmathews77

Jordan Hill has a few years to go before we see his potential. I think he’s actually kind of raw offensively and he’s not much of a shot blocker at all. And he’s not a better rebounder than David Lee either. I don’t know if he’ll be a star in this league but he can be a decent role player. Then again it’s only his second summer league game so we should at least give him some more time. But as of right now I see a decent player off the bench. I think Toney Douglas will have a better start to his career with the Knicks.

  • Arputter

Its only two games and he admitted he isn’t in shape, but I’m definitely a little less optimistic than I was two days ago. Hill’s numbers were very pedestrian, but there were tons of shots in both games, where he created good looks for himself, lined up the shot nice and it just rimmed out. Those will fall and it wasn’t like there was one or two of those, there were a lot. I definitely don’t see any shot blocking ability, which is what I thought we had targeted. He is active and he will improve our defense. I agree with the Drew Gooden comparisons offensively, but I think he just gets after it more than Gooden ever did. He looks to steal entry passes and always tries to run the floor. I think Gooden did that in college and that is why people were so high on him early, but his lack of drive is what caused people to sour on him. Let’s hope that he continues to improve like he did over this three years at Arizona. God knows we need it.

  • Bart

I still dont think were seeing the real Jordan Hill and we wont until he gets in better condition but I think I see LaMarcus Aldridge. We wont be able to know who he is until he gets in better condition.

I much rather see Skiti on the court than Jarred Jefferies.

  • asumets

OK, I am going to cut and paste comments from a sports blog and then post it 6 months down the road to prove you wrong? Dude, seriously?

KBT, I know you are a fan and that’s great, but the fact a 21 year old professional athlete not being in shape is outrageous. Why isn’t he in shape? He can’t fit in 3 hours of workout/day in the off-season?

Why do we all have to drink the kool-aid all the time? Did you back all of Zeke’s moves too?

    You da man Bob!

  • asumets

Good point Myles. Vegas beats me up everytime I go there…perhaps he is taking a pounding from the bars as well. I understand.

Chris, excllent article and scouting. keep it up!

  • asumets

Frye’s rookie year was awesome. He was an absolute beast, but he started taking to many jumpers the next year.

  • bmathews77

It is actually really important that the Knicks get rid of Eddy Curry as soon as possible now because we don’t want Curry’s horrible work ethic and laziness rubbing off on Jordan Hill or any of the younger players the Knicks bring in.

  • KBT1615

wow you people have no sense of humor do you.
Also wyou people are just like the NY Media you all took his comment of being out of shape and ran with it mixed with a couple of average Summer League games and you all go crazy.
Bob you are an Idiot and asumets there is a fine line between Realistic fan and The Paranoid fan..
