Report: Boozer For Lee A Possibility?

by Ben Kopelman on July 25th, 2009 at 11:17 am

…not really…

The following was published in the Salt Lake City based newspaper the Deseret News (and forwarded along on RealGM):

“A scenario is reportedly being considered by the Knicks in which the team would sign restricted free-agent forward David Lee and then send him off to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Boozer, according to a story published by Newsday.

“A potential trade for Lee could cause an interesting conundrum for the Jazz, since both he and Paul Millsap play the same position and have comparable statistics. But such a move would undoubtedly prove to be popular with the team’s fan base — given Lee’s reputation for solid defense and hustle play.”

Ex-squeeze me? Baking powder?

Why would the Jazz want Lee and Milsap, two nearly identical players? Moreover, how does a paper publish the words “solid defense” next to David Lee’s name and expect to be taken seriously?

This is something we will monitor, but not something that seems too likely (nor credible based on this report)…

Dunno. Boozer to the Knicks doesn’t seem unlikely to me. Just gotta find a third team to take Lee.

  • HaS

_avi_ Lee gets a pass again.

First of all, I want to talk about Alan Hahn’s feelings on giving Sessions half the mid level. This is why they should never have beat writers for a basketball team when basketball isn’t their favorite sport. He is a hockey man. Why in Gods name would you offer sessions half the mid level when the Bucks would almost certainly match it? Why not give your “PG of the future” the full mid level? What’s wrong with giving him 5.8 milli to start? The kid is going to be a great pg in this league sooner rather than later. He would’ve been a great pg last year if he wasn’t in Skiles doghouse and Skiles wasn’t slurping Luke so hard. I would take Sessions over Duhon in a heartbeat because if you remember last year….how many times did Duhon get to the rim, have a wide open lay up and then bring it back out to the top of the key? That is called not knowing what to do with the ball. Just because you know how to run the pick and roll and are able to hit the outside shot doesn’t mean your the pg for this offense. Duhon was bought here by DW on a 2 year deal. He is not the answer. Sessions is younger, more athletic, bigger and stronger. He’s also a better decision maker with the ball. It’s not even close. Stick to hockey Hahn…….if his blog worked I would tell him there.

Secondly….in regards to David Lee for Carlos Boozer. I was never a Boozer fan but I am a realist. He is head and shoulders better than Lee. It’s not even close. I love every facet of Lee’s game except his defense. His defense is the reason why he will never be an all star or a teams top 2 or even 3 options. He is not a difference maker and for him and his agent to COMMAND 12 milli per year is really a slap in the face to us as an organization. I understand your trying to get your money but there are more ways to get your money. If your agent was smart, he would get creative with the contract terms…..8 milli is the most Lee should and will get from any team out there. Utah is not going to pay Lee 12 mill per year so us bloggers may as well get that out of our head now. I don’t even know why the reporter bought this scenario up. If Lee stays with us this year for the QO….he should be booed his first time on the Garden floor during the regular season…just because he has a idiot for an agent. Then he’s in the paper the other day crying like a little girl. Stop crying and stop doing all these damn basketball camps and work on your D. How many of us got sick of watching David Lee last year constantly get beat on the low block and then looking at the bench with his “help me” face. GTFOH!!!

DVJ Knicks Webisodes are coming back and they’ll be better than ever.
    New Webisode coming soon….stay tuned…..and remember……
WE DON’T CARE IF FEELINGS GET HURT!!!!!

i was coming home from dinner last night at about 8:45 pm,listening to ESPN 10:50 radio,(i dont know who the sports guy was,but he was talking about a rumor of DAVID LEE to portland ,and he said “who are we gonna get to replace d.lee’s DEFENSE”? and i thought defense? this guy on radio actually gets paid for his professional opinion, and he said dlee is a good defense guy!

  • joetheknick

Good post. I agree with your sentiments. At this point I believe both Lee and Boozer have worn out their welcomes and the proposed trade would clear the air for both teams. Plus DW will be delighted with Boozers expiring contract. Regarding Sessions. I agree, as you have stated, he would be a great fit, but I am believing DW will not pull the trigger. I think DW is doubting his ability to move Curry and Jeffiries and is unwilling to sign anyone into the 2010 season. If he passes on Sessions, he will probably look to move Jeffries for the expiring contract of Speedy Claxton or Mike James. IMO there won’t be any new salaries added until Curry as actually traded

  • Myles A. Mills

    probably bill daughtry

  • BiggieSmalls

I dont see Lee for Boozer going down. Makes NO sense.

I CAN see the Knicks doing a sign and trade with Lee.

I suspect there is a LARGE deal with Portland in the works with Nate AND Lee going there with Jeffries and young pieces/Draft picks coming back.

Perhaps some of those pieces (Rudy Fernandez?) can be packaged with Chandler to get Rubio out of Minny.

Although the Rubio to Real Madrid rumors are heating up.

  • Mucha

    Good post.

  • joetheknick

Portland keeps coming up as a trading partner. I can see Portland giving up Blake and Outlaw. Do you feel that by picking up Miller they have given up on Bayless. Do you think they would throw in Fernandez? A lot of players for a David Lee who will not be cheap? Your thoughts

  • Bruno

I’m not claiming that Lee is a good defender by any means, but he’s better then he’s getting credit for here. He’s a small-ish PF that played C last year and was the teams 2nd Offensive option most of the year, on a team that used a 7-8 man rotation. He couldn’t afford to be on the bench with foul trouble ala Eddy Curry. He’s a solid TEAM defender, but not one-on-one. When Curry was going good a couple years ago, Lee was better fit next to him than Frye bc of his rebounding and HELP D. This skill hasn’t left him, it was just put on the back burner due to circumstance. Next to Darko, Lee’s D should look MUCH better although still not “top-notch”.

  • Mucha

The only players (from Portland) the Knicks should be interested in are Rudy Fernandez and Jerryd Bayless in my opinion.

But I think the Knicks will need a third team because the Blazers have many small contracts – except Pryzbilla but his contract expires in 2011. It’ll be hard to make the numbers match.

  • joetheknick

I agree that Bayless and Fernandez are the only two players that could improve the Knicks. Blake and Outlaw just don’t add anything to the team. Someone more expert than me will have to figure out how to make the numbers work?

  • Cheech

Im with u Bruno. Bring back Dave!

  • joetheknick

I agree that Lee is a fan favorite and is a one of our best players. The trouble is Lee and his agent are the only ones who think he should bet paid like a franchise player. He isn’t. I think we all know his strength and weaknesses. I wish he and his agent would come down to earth and accept a reasonable payday. If he improves the money will follow.

  • Bruno

I agree. What boggles my mind is how an agent can be so out-of-tune with the economic climate. Ron Friggin Artest took the MLE! Miller took a $3m paycut, Millsap signed for 4/$32. Allen Iverson is looking the MLE. How does “David Lee = #12m” fit into this market? I’m want what he’s smoking.

  • joetheknick

Hopefully Lee and management will make up and Lee will stay on the team. Some sportswriter was saying this is not the first time a young player got an attitude. Anderson Varajao got made at Cleveland over money but he got over it and recently signed an extension. It is only money.

  • Bruno

Plus, $8m per year is still A LOT of coin! It’s not like he won’t be able to “feed his kids”.

  • renenyg1

I would like to keep Lee but if we can’t sign him I sure will trade him for Boozer because Boozer will be a more valuable trade chip,I was never a big fan of Boozer but we can trade him for more than we can get for Lee.Lee should fire his agent and get back down to the real world 12 per is fantasy.Sessions is not all that I want Rubio he will stir the drink. We can collect chips like the GM in Minny and at the end of the day swap.We need Rubio here.

  • renenyg1

Mucha Bayless looked great Las Vegas,

  • Bruno

I’m still waiting for DW’s money saving shocker. Hopefully it’s: Duhon, Jeffries & protected ’12 pick FOR Sessions & Ridinour

  • Bruno

He did last year too. How far did that take him once the season actually began?

  • HaS

_avi_ Lee’s “HELP D” and his “TEAM” defense both are terrible as well, he is never where he is supposed to be, often looking to let the other team get off the shot and trying to get into position for for the possible rebound. His rotations are late, often giving the other team the “And 1″ opportunity.

He did play out of position last year but he’s been in the league 4 yrs. That also doesn’t excuse his team defense or help defense. His lack of shot blocking with his athletic ability and his inability to sacrifice his body to take a charge.

He doesn’t deserve any more credit than he gets here. He is overrated and that is why his agent thought he would command a 10-12 million per contract this offseason.

  • barnaby8787

    LOL, solid defense.

  • barnaby8787

I almost guarantee that donnie wanted d-lee and JJ for rudy, bayless, and outlaw. Then the blazers said throw in chandler, which threw off everything. Something along those lines. Considering that the blazers are shopping bayless (according to reports), especially after they got miller and rudy wants out; if DW could pull something off to acquire those two without losing any of our young talent, I think the city of NY would bow down to him…

  • Bart

Walsh has to get untapped young talent in any trade for Lee Portland has that and is the best trade partner. Bayless is gonna be great but it wont happen in Portland with Brandon Roy needing the ball in his hand all the time if we get him we don’t need Sessions and Rudy is a great 3pt shooter and another piece we need in the system.

  • KBT1615

IM BACK!!!!! I love Miami anybody that hasn’t been GO. NOW….
But I have missed a lot and tried to catch up by going back but I missed too much but I have read some comments and a couple of D Lee S&T I read and Liked..

    1. Of Course D Lee for Boozer.
    2. D Lee for Tyrus Thomas and 1st round pick.
For those people saying that one won’t work WELL I kinda think it will since Chi Town is kind of mad at him..

  • Earl The Pearl

David Lee has worn out his welcome in New York??? Ok, you must have eaten the brown acid. Oh, and when we don’t sign Boozer after the carpetbagger stays one year and leaves, who’s going to start at power forward? Chris Bosh?

  • Earl The Pearl

Bayless sucks. What did he do that was so great last year? I’d rather keep Nate than have Bayless, who’s a not a PG; is too small to be a SG; and is not as talented as Nate.

And, while I like Outlaw, we don’t need him with Chandler, Gallo and Harrington plays the 3.

  • Earl The Pearl

Walsh and Bartledufus should just do the dew and get the deal done for $8.5 or $9 mill/yr and be done with it. Lee doesn’t have a lot of other options and, even if he did, NY is where he needs to be.

I like the core of young guns we have. Now is we can get Sessions signed, without a S & T, Walsh/D’Antoni are building a corp of young players who can grow together as a team. Then, maybe, in 2010 we sign Joe Johnson and in 2011 we can sign Dwight Howard or some other stud.

  • BiggieSmalls

now you know why Pat Riley left us.. and why Boozer wants to go and Wade aint leaving.

  • KBT1615

as soon as I get back…
