Report: Tinsley Wants NY

by Ben Kopelman on July 29th, 2009 at 11:51 am

The Daily News is reporting that FA Jamaal Tinsley‘s top choice is to play for the Knicks in 2009:

“Jamaal Tinsley is prepared to sign with the Knicks … assuming Donnie Walsh is willing to make him an offer.

“A source close to the free agent point guard said that Tinsley will commit to the Knicks, even it means accepting less money than other teams may offer, because he wants to be reunited with Walsh and play in New York.”

I would think him being from Brooklyn makes playing at MSG intriguing as well.

Will keep you posted…

    NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! (ECHO)

I was against bringing in Jamaal Tinsley at first but thinking about it, he may actually do well here. He did play very well for Rick Carlisle awhile back and we know he’ll get a 1 year deal thats cheap to show what he’s got. I’m sure Tinsley is dying to prove his critics wrong about him. He’s playing for his career and a new contract so I think he may actually be a good fit here especially for the price.

yeah I actually would have thrown up yesterday if I read this but for cheap, why not do this?

  • knicksbro

Exactly how cheap are we talking? 1-2 mill per year?

  • Ben Kopelman

(i still kinda threw up a little)

  • bduigs

I have no problem with this one year rental. Let him and Duhon fight it out.

  • Chris Alvino

Everyone, I know that no contract figures have been thrown out yet, but how much do you think Walsh would possibly give this guy? He is not getting the full MLE. In all likelihood, he won’t even get 1/2 of that. He is better than the other options (not named Ramon Sessions or Ray Felton). I am not sure why everyone is so down on this guy for such a cheap deal.

Aside from Felton and Sessions, he is the only starting caliber FA PG left. Tinsley has been a starting PG on a playoff team. I am all for this move if it happens. Only if Sessions on a multi-year deal has absolutely ZERO chance of happening.

it seems like if everything falls apart and we are sitting here with empty hands…

tinsley would be a nice fall back option to split the time with Duhon.

  • knicksbro

Maybe 2 years 4 million? or 1 year 2 million?

  • bmathews77

I’m guessing Tinsley can be had for the veterans minimum which is about $1.2 mill.

  • Chris Alvino

Yeah I would think so. If he asks for more than that, then move on. But I doubt he can expect more than that.

    knicksblog,
you guys do a great job.

isn’t tinsley another so-so point that is not a GREAT shooter.
fg avg. under 40%, and a poor 3pt avg.
gotta believe donnie and mike want points that are shooters!

  • Mucha

He wouldn’t be a bad addition.

10 veteran minutes per game, I mean why not.

  • J-Knick

He’s just spent a year without playing. and never was a gym rat anyway.
Look at how marbury’s game dropped

I say pass and let the minutes for Douglas.

  • bmathews77

Speaking of Marbury, has anyone seen that video aired of himself crying? He truly is the Mike Tyson of Basketball. What a nutjob.

Unlike many of the posters here, I’ve always liked Tinsleys game… He is a good rebounder for a pg, and can run a team very well… Kind of reminds me of a Mark Jackson type… But I think bringing him in even for cheap says all the wrong things… Arent they trying to change the culture?

I think the Knicks want to bring in a player who is a leader on the court… A guy that Curry, Nate, Hughes, and Harrington can respect… And I do agree that Tinsley is more suited to do that now than Sessions is… Jamaal will demand respect but his off the court attitude and just his attitude in general could hurt a team… What happens if he is out playing Duhon and he isnt starting… Does he deal with that well? I doubt it, I’m sure Tinsley already thinks Duhon is a bum, who’s job he could easily take in his sleep… I just feel like that attitude could filter throughout the rest of the team… And could murder any chemistry… If he comes here and eventually that attitude surfaces, you will have a bunch of disgruntled teammates because of it… He is a leader but sometimes leaders can lead you in the wrong direction…
