Post: Williams Interest has No Impact on Sessions

by Tommy Dee on August 3rd, 2009 at 7:22 am

Via Berman:

“…According to a source, Walsh wants to sign Sessions to a long-term deal starting at less than $5.8 million so that his 2010-2011 cap number will be less than $6 million. The source said a number of proposals have been discussed, including a one-year contract.

The Bucks, tapped out financially because of luxury-tax concerns and content with rookie point guard Brandon Jennings, are not expected to match an offer for Sessions, a former second-round pick.

The Knicks’ interest in un-retired point guard Jason Williams, whom they will work out this week, has no effect on the Sessions pursuit. Williams is a cheaper alternative if they can’t re-sign Nate Robinson for one year…”

He also mentions that a deal could come today.

    RAMON
    A True Pass First PG.
I saw that 24 assist game recently and he got 7 assists without even taking his own shot.

  • Bruno

    Git-r-done!

  • joetheknick

Hope Sessions gets signed as could be a great addition. He will shine as a slash and kick PG if Robinson, Chandler and Gallinari make their open shots on the perimeter. This will help Harrington and Robinson who should not be pressured to do all the scoring. Better balance will help win more games. Go Knicks.

  • danisrob

A no brainer if we are getting him for $4million or so, not sure if teh full midlevel for 5 years is the right answer though.

This off season hasnt been amazing for Knicks fans but if we can Sessions – and the BIG if, if we get rid of Curry. Donnie would have exceeded all expectations in his first year and a bit. Shedding Big Snacks, Zach, Crawford and Curry while getting some young talent – Hill, Douglas, Sessions (and even Harrington and Darko). My hat would be off.

  • dino2008

I am thrilled about this. This kid is extremley gifted and will be yet another addition to our young and exciting core.

I all along have said when we grabbed Duhon lats year ehh, he is a great backup point guard and this showed during the end of last season. The pursuit for any and every point guard available has the look that Duhon might be traded this season. I say keep him as a backup, he knows the system and only this year left.

JWill I just dont think has the heart anymore, if Sessions is signed does this make Duhon the backup automatically? I was wanting Hinrich until I heard is contract is ugly and will disrupt the 2010 plans. Since we wont get Deron Williams, lets just sign Sessions do something with Nate and D Lee and lets look forward to the 2009-2010 season and hope by trade deadline Big Ed and Jared’s contracts are off the books. Go NYK GO represent.

  • joetheknick

    good comment. I agree.

  • greatman42001

I’m sorry I can’t come around on signing Sessions, he hasn’t shown that he can do this from year to year, he had one good season, and I’m not saying he won’t be as good as he was last yr but it isn’t certain. When you have so much riding on next yr’s off-season I think you can’t take cap space away from it unless you are 1000% percent sure that this guy is going to show up every single night for the entire season.
With the Bucks out of the picture why don’t they just give him a one yr deal and hope to resign next year if in fact he is what many people on this blog feel he will be. Zeke did this once before and we all know what the result of signing someone based on one yr of work was…. Jerome James…. and another one by the name of Jared Jefferies

  • bmathews77

I’m trying to understand the point of the Knicks interest in Jason Williams. Do they think that Nate Robinson will not return? Only because Jason Williams is better off coming off the bench on a title contending team. Not coming off the bench on a young rebuilding team.
The Knicks primary interest should be with Ramon Sessions and then I’d say Jamaal Tinsley.

  • gbaked

or maybe its a negotiation ploy.

  • gbaked

Jerome James was based off of one playoff run… not one season.

And that was for the Full MLE.

    Sessions is a different story.

The reason you do it is you look at the PG landscape and realize its him or bust basically…

Its a risk.. but a good risk.

  • Big Mikey

“He also mentions that a deal could come today.”

thats not the first time i’ve heard that.

Id do anything for the knicks to do something. Ive been on the edge of my seat since the first day of Kidd negotiatons. Come on DW just give me something to cheer or jeer about.

  • renenyg1

I hope he’s not a one year wonder, with such a small sample we have to rely on others making this call.

  • Magik_Trick

    Yeah, what Big Mikey said..
They said a deal could come “today” about a month ago..

&Also, I heard if this goes down Donnie might consider pulling the offer for Nate…anyone think this should be done? Despite them playing totally different..

&1More think, I want Sessions more than anybody, you dont put up 40 points, a triple double, and a few double doubles, and not be able to play better than Chris Duhon in a full season..

BUT, we have to remember, hes still restricted, Bucks can & if the deal is less than 5-years, probably will match the offer that we send to him..

  • Mal

What about Sessions doesnt Scott Skiles like? We are looking to make this kid a possible starter, is there something behind the scenes we dont know about?

What happens if we keep our MLE? What does that do for us next year? Should we hold on to it until trade deadline and use it to get an expiring contract that would be a great 2010 early pickup? Does that even make sense, I dotn know how the MLE works? Plus we still got Cuttino’s stuff too right? Could someone explain how this works to me, thanks.

Do we want Garcia for who Nate and also Mr Kenny Thomas’ expiring contract for Jared J..yes. I just wonder is it still on the table, I say yes but I still like Nate what does Garcia bring to the table?

  • Chris Alvino

Garcia makes a lot of money, and I am not sure he was ever on the table.

Also, next year we will not have the MLE as we will be under the cap.

Also, if we save the MLE, we can use it to sign a player in the season. We cannot use it as a trade exception. Not to my knowledge at least. We cannot use it as a trade exception right now either.

  • parkerstrong

Dan D’Antoni (Mike’s brother) was Sessions AAU coach. I think they might know more about his make-up/attitude/talent than anyone else-Sessions grew up under Dan’s watch. Everyone is saying D’Antoni is pushing for Sessions while Walsh wants to keep the cap space and it looks like D’Antoni is going to win.

Sessions in NY is a great move for the Knicks.

  • joetheknick

The way I am understanding it, Milwaukee has decided to go with Ridnour’s expiring contract and Jenning’s rookie contract. Since Milwaukee is up to the luxury tax they don’t want to pay Sessions 5M long term. That is what Sessions wants and I think that is what DW thinks he is worth. It is really not about Skiles in my opinion. Actually he is a good fit for Skiles who likes a slashing type PG.

  • bob go knicks

ZEKE never signed anyone who fit in as well as sessions does(CURRY,fat ,lazy,RANDOLPH,never fit in with curry,or lee,JEFFRIES,what was he thinking?)

  • bob go knicks

isnt it funny, that the year before, skiles didnt like DUHON when he coached the bulls, and the knicks signed him

  • joetheknick

Your absolutely right. Skiles likes slashers. Duhon doesn’t post and doesn’t slash. Easy to see why Skiles was not impressed.

  • KBT1615

I agre with bob Zeke was just throwing Pieces together hoping it would work.
In D’Antoni’s system you need a drive and Kick and a Pick and Roll PG…Sessions is both and Sessions had two good seasons one he was coming off the Bench but he still played good when he did.

  • Its The Kid

1st off if he showed he could put up good numbers year after year, he wouldnt be available for the mid-level…

2nd Both JJs sucked for years before we got them and the hope was they would find their games on the Knicks… Sessions has played well already… And its only his 2nd year… You would expect him to get better, not worse…

3rd If you sign him for 1year and he plays well he will cost you much more to resign… That is just as much of a risk…

  • joetheknick

Think about last year when we were down to 7 players a game. We could have used Wiliams or Tinsley then and we will probably need them this year. This team is in transition. Every player could be traded for the right deal. That is why you need some vetean on the cheap who are trying to get back in the NBA. Not much risk. Might surprise some.

  • J-Knick

Agree with you greatman Sessions is high risk / high reward.

When isiah traded for E Curry and Z-Bo or gave the MLE to JJs, people were exstatic about it … it’s easy to judge after and these were bad moves with the hindsight.

Sessions is a complete different story ? why ? I cant predict the future. No one did when isiah took Curry either. Sessions is risky but maybe for once we are gonna be lucky.

Also, signing Session LT would be the official end of the possibility to lock D Lee LT … I’m OK with that, since I think David is not a fit in NY.
