Knicks Offer “Slightly Less” Than MLE?

by Myles A. Mills on August 4th, 2009 at 2:08 am

Via RealGM:

“Alan Hahn of Newsday reports that the Knicks have made an offer to Ramon Sessions that is “slightly less” than the team’s full mid-level exception, which starts at about $5.8 million.

Yet Hahn reports that the two sides are “not close to an agreement.”

The Knicks are set to have a large amount of cap room next summer and the team is wary of compromising its free-agent plans by adding too much salary to the 2010-2011 ledger.”

Hahn says a source has told him that the Bucks would match anything up to $3 million so Walsh should start slightly above that, and it seems as though he is.  Gery Woelfel says via Twitter: “Knicks still covet R.Sessions but want to move a player 1st. Ditto 4 Clippers.”  That player would seemingly be Eddy Curry or Jared Jeffries so I’d assume that if the reports about the Knicks signing Jason Williams solely to trade him are true, Walsh will probably attempt to package him in a deal with Jeffries, because at this point trading Eddy Curry isn’t feasible.  This is taking a long time, but Walsh is doing the right thing.  Why pay Sessions more than what any other team is willing to?  It’s not lowballing him if he has no other offers.  The Clippers are being overlooked in this situation, though, and they could swoop in and make an offer to Sessions.
