Von Wafer to Olympiakos?

by Chris Alvino on August 10th, 2009 at 2:16 pm

Eurobasket.com is reporting that the Olypiakos is set to sign free agent guard Von Wafer to a deal.  Also, the team has reportedly signed free agent Linas Kleiza to a 2 year, $12.2 million deal.

Well, that is more than Kleiza would have gotten in the US, so good for him.  Wafer has been linked to the Knicks this summer, but if this report is true, then we can cross him off the list.

In other news, PG Tyrese Rice has signed with Panionios, a Greek team from Athens.

This has zero effect on the Knicks, but I knew Ty at BC.  I remember watching game tape with him while sitting in chemistry class.  He cares a lot about his game and he is a good competitor.  Good for him.

Olympiacos is damn near an NBA team…
    Childress, Kleiza, Wafer…..

I liked Tyrese Rice, before finding out we purchased a 29th pick, I was hoping we would get a 2nd round pick, and draft him..I was surprised he went undrafted

But for Von Wafer, I was SUPER dissapointed that we couldnt sign him, hes an NBA level talent imo..and would have been a big help for us off the bench

  • barnaby8787

Maybe donnie should wait on ramon sessions and let him go to LAC too. God, this is annoying. By the way, if you wanted (for any reason) jerry stackhouse, do you still want him now? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5UpQl18OOM&feature=aso&hd=1

  • Chris Alvino

Yeah, Olypiakos must be pretty good. Kleiza went under the radar this summer, much like Nate Robinson. Make no mistake though, Kleiza is a good NBA player. I am surprised no one gave him a fair look here.

But I am also shocked that no one has looked at Nate.

  • bob go knicks

man,i wish i had DONNIE WALSH’S job. i’d love to have summers off.

  • BiggieSmalls

@AndrewMarchand: Lee’s agent says that there have been sign & trades they liked, but Knicks have said no.

  • Magik_Trick
  • barnaby8787

Yeah, because it was prob terrible deals for NY like Lee to Portland for Outlaw and Pryzbillia. Of course Lee and his agent like it b/c portland is a good team, but trades like that would kill the knicks.

  • HaS

Give up Big they’re not going to stop giving the kid a pass. I’m really starting to believe the theory I came up with on the reason why.

  • HaS

I liked Kleiza and when they mentioned trading Lee for him before I was all for it, even though he isn’t the rebounder _avi_ is. He would have been a fit in _’antoni’s system and he seemed to at least care about defending, that may have been due to Karl’s coaching.

  • HaS

They could kill the Knicks that’s for sure.

  • HaS

Von Wafer is a poor man’s John Starks. He would have been a good backup and a situational starter depending on matchups (he’s a little undersized).

  • KBT1615

this coming from the guy that said a 6’6 SG is undersized…

  • MrFurious

Your beginning to believe your own theory? Really. Really?

  • BiggieSmalls

i wanna see Donnie come out next and say that Bartelstein’s statement simply isnt true.

  • barnaby8787

LOL, yeah; a sf who d-lee is better than as seen through declining a trade, a sg who the knicks cut from their summer league team, and a scrawny 6’7 sg who couldn’t stay healthy to get a good offer from an nba team; plus, an undrafted pg could beat the knicks. Makes sense.

  • HaS

He’s LISTED at 6’5″ and that’s probably generous as most NBA heights are. He looks closer to 6’4″ and his wing span looks average at best. Have you ever watched him against other NBA shooting guards?

He reminds me of John Starks like I said, who also was undersized he was about 6’3″ he was listed at 6’5″. He was a great player and he made up for it with his feistiness and fearless nature.

As for the Greek team beating the Knicks, I was being facetious, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they did win. The Knicks aren’t exactly the cream of the NBA I think we could all agree. While this Greek team seems to be one of the better Euro clubs supposedly.

  • HaS

    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Von-Wafer-179/

6’5″ but he looks smaller, and they don’t have his official draft measurements, but I’m sure he’s shorter than that and his wingspan is nothing worth mentioning.

  • HaS

Do you know what facetious means? Look it up. I’ll wait.

  • HaS

I don’t want t o believe it, but I can’t for the life of me figure out what happened to Knick fans that could smell bullsh** a mile away and would have never given a player a pass at every opportunity the way they have with _avi_. The media maybe, but not Knick fans! WTH is going on?

  • HaS

LOL if they can revive him for long enough to get a statement.

Again, here I am being sarcastic, before others (who shall remain nameless) take my words to heart and get all menstrual on me.

  • Magik_Trick

I guess, we’ve been bad for so long its just not there anymore

  • bob go knicks

id like to see donnie come out and say ANYTHING

  • bob go knicks

weve been believing DONNIE WALSH’S bullshit, and everyone is giving him a free pass.

  • BiggieSmalls

    ill lay it out there..

Bartelstein is full of it.. Donnie aint gonna bid against himself and Bartelstein is absolutely desperate to build a market.

Bartelstein floated this nonsense about DW rejecting S&Ts and he floated the 4/38 nonsense.

There are no sign and trades because Lee is dramatically over shooting his market value.

  • BiggieSmalls

Walsh has been getting an “In Donnie we trust” pass as well.

    probably equal to Lee’s pass.

  • bob go knicks

off the subject: im sitting here watching game #5 from the 94 knicks -rockets nba FINALS .man i loved those guys! the more i watch ,the more i hate MIKE D’ANTONI DEE-FENSE DEE-FENSE DEE-FENSE!

  • HaS

Yea right?! I was thinking the same thing! That DEE-FENCE chant doesn’t have the same ring it had back then does it? These days it probably fires up the opposing team more than anything. I would imagine in those days it must have been pretty intimidating.

  • HaS

    Seriously.

    *straight face*

  • pedro

Olympiakos really does love basketball, cause the soccer (football) team didn’t spend that kind of money. They even sold Belluschi to my club. oh well good for them.

  • Jeff Cykiert

You can’t be pissed at a player because his contract negotiations aren’t resolved yet. None of us have any clue what is going on on either side of the negotiations, and there is no reason to expect it to be resolved sooner than later. Haste has no benefit in this situation; NONE. Everything you read about what Lee wants or what bartlestein thinks he can get or what trades are/were available, its all just posturing from both sides if not random speculation by unreliable journalists. none of it means anything.

This is what happens with RFA’s, its part of the business no matter who the player is, and judgments should be reserved until something actually happens and he is either playing for us next year, or he isn’t. If he is, he will still be the same guy we all liked.

All this talk about ‘giving lee a pass’ makes no sense. You are just impatient; this is just how it is.

By the way, we didn’t ‘miss’ von wafer, we purposely had/showed no interest in him because we didn’t want him. Just because you think we should have wanted him doesn’t mean it was a missed opportunity…

Wafer SUCKS. He is awful. It’s true. He has worse shot selection and passing mentality and Nate and Harrington combined, but he isn’t half as good as either of them. EW.

  • Jeff Cykiert

If you guys think Donnie is doing a terrible job just because he hasn’t made some crazy move to make us twice as good, you are pretty much begging for us to repeat what zeke did over again.

There is no quick fix, there is no one day solution. There is no reason to make drastic changes just for the sake of changing. We are in the early phases of reconstruction, get used to it.

If bob go knicks was our GM, we would be over the cap again next year for the next 5 years struggling to make the playoffs.

Just because we didn’t buy an expensive player or trade away Chandler AND Hill for a SHOT IN THE DARK at rubio, and we haven’t signed sessions YET, does not mean donnie is a failure. It actually means the opposite; he is being a smart manager. The fact we haven’t rushed to any decisions a breath of fresh air. I’m not ‘giving him a pass.” This is not “blind faith.” We had a plan, and we improved slightly while sticking to the plan, and no bad decisions (commitments) have been made. THAT IS GOOD, its fact, not faith.

  • BiggieSmalls

Im not pissed at all that negotiations are ongoing.

I AM pissed that the mainstream media and bloggers are giving Lee a complete pass for HIS past statements regarding his feeling towards staying in NY.

Lee was very public in his comments during the season and very few commenters here are callign him out on it. NO mainstream media or bloggers are doing that.

Lets remember the comments. to paraphrase – “I want to be here and be part of what they are building and understand the importance of maintaining cap flexibility in 2010. I would take below market to stay in NY for my entire career. I want to be in NY and understand the value of being in the media capital and not getting every last dime on the payroll.”

As I said on a previous thread, I just hope that when the people who have the opportunity to ask him direct questions get that opportunity they ask tough questions about the complete about face we are witnessing in his feelings about staying in NYC.

Separately, I dont think Lee is worth anywhere near what he is asking for. But that is a separate discussion. To follow up those comments with 12 million dollar per year price and an agent saying “Lee played 4 years for a discount” is something that Lee himself needs to be called on.

  • BiggieSmalls

was Donnie following the plan when he didnt trade Nate and Jeffries for expiring deals at the deadline?

was Donnie following the plan when he took Lee completely off the market during the season and would not listen to offers,?>

My comment was really in regards tot he “In Donnie we Trust” posts which are out of character with NY sports fans and media.

We should question everything and not just say “you got the keys Donnie, Im sitting in the back, let me know when we get there”

  • bob go knicks

that was the only smart thing said yet about the ongoing negotiations between d.lee and d.walsh i find it hard to believe that anything that has been written in the papers or on line has any validity to it all! besides him “being dissapointed” i havent heard a thing out of david lee all summer.i dont think anyone actually knows what hes asking.where the hell did that 12 million a year figure come from?

  • bob go knicks

keeping the same lousy roster as we had last year is not GOOD,it sucks .signing ramon sessions is not a “crazy”move.its called improvement

  • BiggieSmalls

As near as I can tell in early July The New York Times cited a rival GM saying that Bartelstein’s asking price for Lee was in the $12 million per annum range

  • KBT1615

Just saying 6’5 isn’t that undersized.. My bad though I have seen so many depressed fans looking to bring others down I thought you were serious.

  • HaS

Thank you finally someone shares my skepticism. It isn’t about being paranoid or impatient, it’s about allowing the man to prove himself as a GM in New York.

That In Donnie we Trust stuff is disgusting, first of all is this a play on words that appear on American currency, with Donnie replacing GOD?

C’mon people can’t you see the lunacy in taking this stance on any and all decisions, moves OR (in most cases) lack of moves on Walshie’s part?

  • HaS

And yes I can be upset at a player, it’s my right as a fan lol. Even if it were irrational and unwarranted. However, I feel I am justified in being upset that a player who is not very good defensively, has shown little to no improvement (other than free throw shooting) or development in his game in 4 years, yet thinks he’s worth more than Lamar Odom who is a better ALL AROUND PLAYER and who has established himself as a difference maker on a PLAYOFF team and an NBA CHAMPIONSHIP squad. More than Paul Milsap who is a tireless worker who sacrifices his body to take charges and play tough hard nosed defense (he blocks shots and is actually shorter than _avi_), has shown improvement in his offense/jumpshot and also has shown the ability to perform and play an integral part on a PLAYOFF team. Or more than Ron Artest who if he wasn’t such an eccentric (be nice) person would be a star in this league, not many guys can punish their opponent on both ends of the floor the way this man has proven over his career. Even though he didn’t play his best, he put a team decimated by injury on his back and pushed the eventual NBA champions to 7 games, giving Kobe all he could handle.

_avi_ Lee until he proves otherwise is a loser (I know that’s harsh, but he has played on 4 losing teams and hasn’t sniffed the playoffs in his NBA career). He is not nor will he ever be a difference maker in the NBA. He needs to come down off his salary demands, he isn’t worth much more than 7 mil per, IF THAT, at a “discount” which he said he was willing to take.

So stop giving _avi_ Lee a pass and call him out the same way you would anyone else on this team if his agent made these statements and he didn’t come forward and speak out to put him in check.

  • Mucha

Donnie Walsh is a really good GM but he made some decisions I did not agree with.

He should have tried to deal David Lee before the trade deadline because Lee’s trade value was high and he had a lot more leverage than he has now (considering Lee’s demands). The fact that he took him completely off the market was a huge mistake in my opinion (hopefully he’ll find a way to resolve this situation – only the conclusion matters). And I think he had to try to resolve Nate Robinson’s situation before Ramon Sessions.

But to blame Walsh for his inactivit is stupid in my opinion. Which moves do you serioudly want him to make? Are they realistic? What are your expectations? Isn’t his hesitation about Ramon Sessions’ contract reasonable?

  • Magik_Trick

How did all of this come about from Chris announcing that Von Wafer signed overseas? o_O

  • BiggieSmalls

Dont foget more valuable than Hedo Turkoglu who got 5 years fifty million for an AAV of 10 mil per.

  • bob go knicks

first of all RICKY RUBIO has the possibility to be one of those special players that comes along once every 15-20 years in our lives.when you see that you try your best to grab it.im mean the object of all this is to get your team to be better at playing basketball .A) going after rubio doesnt put the knicks over the cap..and if it works you get a great, great point guard that every knicks fan would grow with and be proud of.if it doesnt work ,the worst that could happen is ….we lose WILSON CHANDLER …BIG WHOOOP… or sign sessions, hes young ,and talented and he should grow with our young team and only get better as the years and seasons pass.donnie could sign him now and worry about getting rid of jeffries or curry later…..none of this put us over the cap that lbj will prolly not sign with us anyway and yet we improved our team.but to just sit here with their fingers up their arses and do nothing but wait til 2010 not only accomplishes nothing in 2009 ,if none of the big guys sign with us when our cap is at its lowest it doesnt improve our team in 2010 either. but my point is we are throwing, yes THROWING 2 seasons of nba basketball(which should be illegal) and next year we dont even have a draft pick to show for it.im not saying “go out and spend money recklessly”as jeff suggests,im saying improve the team when you can, this can be the last chance we have at signing a good point guard,if you wait til jeffries or curry are traded, there might not be a point guard to take

  • bob go knicks

well thats the whole point isnt it? we’ll never know if not signing sessions is reasonable cuz walsh ,who at the start of his tenure promised to be so media friendly hasnt been saying anything, or anything thats the truth.he should come out and speak to the fans and tell them why we cant have sessions or why he wont sign williams etc.its that bunker mentality all over again

  • Mucha

Because you and everybody know why!

He doesn’t want to touch his sacrosanct capspace, that’s why – the fans already know that.

  • Chris Alvino

Haha. I like it though. Good reading. Good debating.

  • Big Mikey

Tyrese Rice is the man. Al Skinner is probably the worst coach ive ever seen. As a fan of rice ive seen many games. BC never ran a play on offense ever. their defense was just pass it around the top of the key for like 20 seconds, then they panic and give it to rice, and he creates his own shot. Also i espcially noticed this when they played duke: they never put their hands up on defense. They play defense with their arms by their side, even in a zone.

With all of these factors against him, Rice found a way to single handedly beating UNC (25 points 8 dimes) and Duke (21, 6)

Why wouldnt the knicks, or any other team sign him? even if its just for one year? why would they consider guys like white chocolate.
