Deal in the Works?

by Tommy Dee on August 31st, 2009 at 6:29 pm

Now let me preface this as not to upset anyone who is allergic to speculation. But I have a feeling there is something in the works regarding the Knicks roster. I’ve poked around and heard from several places that there is zero trade market for Nate Robinson, and along with the sign and trades that Donnie Walsh is mulling, I still firmly believe that this isn’t the roster the team will head into camp with.

Sure, Walsh has to be careful, and we know he’s patient, I just have a feeling that something is brewing.

Why? Well, call it a hunch. Let’s forget about the having to deal a player in order to bring in Ramon Sessions, the fact that the Knicks haven’t pulled the trigger on a one-year back up point guard option like Carlos Arroyo, Jamal Tinsley, Jason Williams or even Allen Iverson (even though we’ve been through that), I just feel a move coming.

Big or small, I don’t know, but it just seems like this team is prepping to light a fire under it’s fanbase as training camp nears and it has options that are being withheld. Remember, most trades happen when the media least expects them.

Sure, Toney Douglas would gain valuable experience if they don’t bring in another point guard, and Jordan Hill would have to get his legs quickly under him should Lee be signed and traded. As long as the deal is right, I’m not opposed to either scenario.

I’m just saying, I feel a move coming…

    Boozer in NY in 2010…

  • Magik_Trick

I kind of have the same gut feeling, that we have something big in the works, and Donnies just working out the kinks..

I doubt its for Boozer, as the Jazz have our pick in 2010, and would dare do anything to possibly prevent that pick from being a lottery pick

Im a big Toney Douglas guy, if we dont get Sessions, i’d be fine with Duhon and Douglas, in terms of our point guards, i’d like to see Sessions and Douglas only, with Duhon being elsewhere..but that seems unlikely right now

As training camp nears we still have 2 RFAs still in the works, wonder how all of this will play out,,,

  • KBT1615

    What else could it be?

  • SpaceMan

    maybe it was bad taco.

  • MrFurious

I know even less than you but I have to believe your right. If this is the team (as it is currently constructed) that goes into the season then I think it’s fair to say that Donnie has not done a good job this summer. We have a gaping hole a PG. We have known this since the season ended. T. Douglas may be great but you can’t gamble your season on an unproven rookie and an obvious backup PG in Duhon. Additionally, even if Robinson is retained, he can’t really help us at PG. He simply doesn’t have the right instincts.

It would be unconscionable that Donnie would not bring in a another credible talent to bolster such a shaky backcourt.

  • dino2008

I agree. I would love to see Sessions and Douglas running the point. Can we possibly trade Duhon to Miami…. I heard they are looking for a backup pg and Duhon would be a nice fit there. Not sure who or what we could get back in return.

  • DinnerDog

I bet they sign and trade Lee. I think D’Antoni likes him but doesn’t love him. I think Lee will only except a deal for 9 million per. Even if it’s for one year we’d still have to re-sign him at around that same price, and do not think he’s worth that much.

I just hope they can get something of value while they still can instead of keeping this guy for this year to save face, even though he’s not in their long term plans. Same with the Mobley contract.

    How about this:

Mobley, Lee (at 9 per) and a cash

    for

    Amare Stoudemire and Sasha Pavlovich

  • Jack D

All due respect Tommy, but writing a whole article based on a feeling? This whole summer us Knick fans have been getting are hopes up. For zero.

So Tommy, please…your breaking my heart!!!

  • Mucha

Donnie Walsh in wait-and-see mode. I think he has his eyes on Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn.

A Wilson Chandler for Jonny Flynn trade would be more acceptable from Kahn’s perspective (if Rubio’s willing or finds a way to play in Minnesota). If Rubio signs with Regal Barcelona ( http://www.marca.com/2009/09/01/baloncesto/1251757378.html) – then maybe Walsh will try to get Sessions.

  • KBT1615

I like this….Must mean something is wrong with it.

  • NYK Orange and Blue

I’m sorry to be a huge bummer here, but I don’t see anything going down. We are still very much in a bad cap situation for next year. At this point we cannot even discuss LBJ/Wade until JJ/Curry are moved(which looks near impossible at this point). Until we move Eddy Curry and his fat contract(pun intended) we are stuck with this team we have now. Can’t blame DW, we all knew going in that it would take years to clean up Isiah’s mess.

  • KBT1615

We can discuss Lebron just can’t discuss Lebron and Wade until JJ is moved.

  • Nytickets

The cap situation is great for summer of 2010 . The Knicks can buy out Curry and Jeffries and it will count towards cap space giving the Knicks enough for two free agents . Chris Paul can opt out of his contract also

  • NYK Orange and Blue

KB- True, we just can’t discuss getting 2 all-stars like we had hoped until the 2 albatross contracts are gone.

  • Nytickets

They do not need to trade Curry or Jeffries contracts can be bought out in last year and count towards cap

  • brownhornet

Start reading Alan Hahan… Burt it’s just a feeling

  • Ray

I dont have that feeling at all. If it does go down the you can say i told you so. If it is going to happen then Gosh darn it cmon donnie. Stop keeping us waiting.

  • bob go knicks

being that the knicks only have 4 guards on the whole roster, and i sure dont think that they wanna have duhon running the point for 40 minutes per game, something has got to happen

  • Rene

I think we are getting Rudy and a number one for Lee ,Cash &Mobley
take back an expiring contract Outlaw

  • Rene

First we get Rudy which wants out to lack of minutes then we get Rubio.
I would give them whatever they want except Gallo,Chandler,Hill,Douglas,

  • Magik_Trick

are we really still talking about Rubio?

  • DinnerDog

It works under the rules, and actually makes a good deal of sense for phoenix. They shave 8 million of their cap, and get a good, relatively similar player instead of losing Stoudemire for nothing next summer.

I actually don’t love Stoudemire, (plays no defense, seems slightly crazy), but he’s better than Lee and its worth a look for a year.

anyways, lets make it happen Don.

  • Jeff Cykiert

I like that Johnny Flynn was brought up. He has incredible potential. It’s like he has the strength and explosiveness of nate, but he’s actually a true point guard. I’m almost hoping rubio somehow goes to GS and we end up trading chandler for him.

It would be hilarious if they kept rubio and we got flynn and flynn became a superstar.

By the way, someone said CP3 can opt out in 2010? That’s not the case. He can’t opt out till 12/13. I want him more than anyone besides lebron but i don’t even think about it as an option.

  • Jeff Cykiert

    rubio to minnesota, not gs

  • Chris Alvino

What about Mike Miller for Larry Hughes?

  • KnickLit

Toney Douglas will be better than Sessions, that’s why there is no hurry to sign Sessions unless he comes in cheap.

Why are people forgetting that Sessions came out of the woodwork with few prior accolades preceding him?

However, Douglas was an all-star in his confernence and BOTH a Scorer AND a DEFENSE WIZARD.

Does Sessions have Toney’s offensive skills? NOOOOOOOOO

So what does Sessions have that is so much better than Douglas?

Answer: Only a season or so of not yet full-time duties in the NBA.

I’d put my money on Douglas being a superior all-around player and an even better leader. And the Knicks management obviously feels the same way too.

  • Rene

I think we are getting Rudy,he wants out and made noise about it,it’s also a perfect match, being Rubio best friend and with Rudy here in New York, getting Rubio here should be easier. The trade with Portland makes sense.it’s probably hard cap wise that’s why it’s taking a while.Portland wants Lee more than any other team besides the Knicks.I went on the Mucha link and the Spanish paper has a story about the Knicks wanting Rudy.quoting Hahn, this is going to be interesting I also have a feeling something cooking,I hope we get Rudy he’s awesome. The reason I brought up Rubio is because he wanted to come here and he reads spanish papers saying the Knicks are getting his buddy for Lee,you can bet he’s telling his agent get me to New York.

  • MiamiMoe

Tommy i love your blog but you don’t have to dedicate a whole article to speculation in order to get us to read and chat on your blog…Tommy by saying that moves are usually made when the media doesn’t expect it and then in turn you (the media) report that you think a move is on the horizon you aren’t saying much…Training camp is a month a way and we have 2 RFA (Lee & Nate) & a RFA (Sessions) that has been linked to us for months still out there, YOU BET YOUR ASS THERE’S A MOVE COMING!!!! We’re not gonna start the year w/ 12 guys (1 bein Mobley so techically 11)…I think DW is weighin out EVERY S&T situation w/ Lee and tryin to make Sessions accept their deal… I like the Fernandez / Outlaw deal for Lee. ( I really like the Amare/Sacha for Lee/Mobley but that’s not gonna happen) i would think that DW is tryin to include JJ in any Deal for Lee cuz that is best case scenario. I want Nate back… I really want Sessions…Lee has shown he’d rather chase the $$$ so getting rid of JJ’s contract would be great…Keep up the great work Tommy and don’t worry i’ll be on your blog no matter how inept the article is…You’re a great fan and this blog is great for us Knick fans to come together and talk KNICK SMACK…just one condition…NO MORE RUBIO

P.S. Just heard on the World Wide Leader that Rubio accepted the Real deal and will be in Spain for at least another 2 years!!!!! NO MORE RUBIO!!!!!!!!!

  • Chris Alvino

In an ideal world, Eddy Curry comes out, plays well, and gets shipped to Washington for Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson, or Andray Blatche and Mike James.

Both Blatche and Stevenson stretch beyond next season, but only for about 4 mill as opposed to Curry’s 11+ million. That would save an extra 7 mill.

  • Chris Alvino

Well, not ideal world. That is more realistic than ideal.

Ideally, we trade Curry without taking back salary beyond next season.

  • barnaby8787

Ok, this is a mass reply b/c some ideas in here make literally no sense…not all, but some…

KBT-at this point, boozer to NY seems like a longshot…has ever since they got back millsap b/c him and D-Lee are so similar. Unless harrington and maybe chandler goes there, but I don’t see why we would do that.

Dinner Dog-Love it, but it’s not happening. They are more or less trading amare straight up for lee and cap space. Something like lee, nate, and chandler for amare and cap filler is much more realistic…granted, that’s not happening with nate’s market right now prob either…

NYtickets-flat out, no. Otherwise, they would buy them out.

Rene-Rudy prob has more trade value for Lee right now. He’s younger with much more upside. Not only does that not work anywhere close salary wise, but talent wise, it’s not where near close either. Rudy AND Outlaw AND a first? Also, rubio=spain. You may have posted before that was official, but it was beyond a longshot anyways.

Knicklit-ghostface will never be better than sessions..never…

And finally chris alvino, this is overly ideal, but i’d love JJ and Hughes for Mike James and Miller.

  • bob go knicks

no way we can get that much for d.lee

  • bob go knicks

sessions is a true point guard ,douglas just aint

  • bob go knicks

didnt rubio just sign a 6 year deal in spain?

  • parkerstrong

Duhon is close to Haslem…..or Quentin Richardson? (lol)

  • bob go knicks

YEAH! id like to see the KNICKS get RUDY F and then sign RAMON SESSIONS .i’d sleep like a baby tonight

    SESSIONS-DUHON
    RUDY-HUGHS
    GALLO-CHANDLER
    HILL?—WHO AM I MISSING?
    DARKO-CURRY

  • parkerstrong

You have no idea….this is the worst post I have seen in the last month….Sessions averaged 12.4ppg, 5.7apg, 3.4rpg 1.1spg in 28.6 minutes! His defense is above-average (I wouldnt say great) and is completely underrated.

Knicks management doesn’t feel that Douglas is better than Sessions….it has been stated many times that the Knicks havent signed him yet because of 2010 cap space. In 4 months you will change your mind of who is better…..

  • parkerstrong

    Yup….

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4435861

Rubio isnt coming for 2 years, whether we get Rudy or not.

  • parkerstrong

Now why would the Wizards do that? Blatche is an asset, not a dead weight contract like Curry. Haywood is an average/above average center….the Wiz would trade his expiring contract for Curry’s bloated deal? Haywood is better than Curry and could be signed for less than 11.8 million next year….

What other outrageous deals are we thinking about?

  • SilentJay

I think you’re on the right path, Rene. I’m always the last guy to get his hopes up (specially the way this summer has been), but Portland has been knocking for some time now, and it seems to me the DW is just wiating to hear the right names to work out a win-win for both sides in a S&T. For the Knicks, Fernandez has got to be on one end of it.
If anything is about to go down, me thinks it involved Lee, possibly packaged with Nate, maybe.
Because if anything else’s going down, I sure hope it has JJ’s name on it, because I don’t how happy I would be if his numbers came off the books. Let alone the party I would throw if Curry actually took a hike somewhere.
But, the fact of the matter is, via rumors, all we know is that Portland is the strongest trade partner for Lee. Anything else has no substance. Donnie does have something up his sleeve, he always does. The thing is anticipating if and when he’s gonna pull the trigger. We can all get our hopes up over hunches, right? I mean, we’ve been doing that throughout the offseason. Sessions, Rubio, Curry and the possible Wiz trade… It can’t hurt to keep speculating.

  • KnickLit

barnaby, you say never, but that doesn’t really answer why. At least I gave the bare bones basis for my assertion Douglas will be better than Sessions, but saying never is not an answer or explanation why you think Sessions is going to be better

  • KnickLit

Talk about stating the obvious. Everybody knows Knicks mgmt is keeping their cap space in line, but nobody seems to know much else. A mountain of speculation done by bored fans and writers trying to stay in business during a dry off-season. For you to state that is the only reason Sessions has not been signed is just regurgitating what has been said a million times. What I see is many people slamming our draft picks and going as far calling them dogs. Well, Sessions was not a first round pick and he looks pretty good, but he didn’t come into the league with a greater pedigree than Douglas. I’m not knocking Sessions. I like him fine, but to think Douglas won’t be at the point is just wrong. He will. And Sessions is not a guaranteed success story if you sign him long-term. I’m totally open to having my mind changed, but in fact I haven’t closed my mind at all. I believe Douglas has an excellent chance of grabbing a starting spot on this team and many people are so obsessed with making deals they look past what we already have. So lets agree to wait and see how each player does this year.

  • JR

I think we would all love to see that happen…

    I’ll bite…your missing DaviD Lee…..whats the joke?
