Rubio to Stay in Spain for Two More Years

“…The Minnesota Timberwolves and the NBA will have to wait until 2011 for Ricky Rubio(notes) to leave Europe, a high-level source told Yahoo! Sports on Monday night.

Regal of Barcelona has agreed to a six-year contract with Rubio after working out a buyout package with DKV Jovenut of Spain on Monday.

After weeks of haggling, Minnesota Timberwolves GM David Kahn was unable to facilitate a buyout that would’ve brought the fifth pick in the 2009 draft to the NBA this season…”

Again, I’ve stayed away from commenting on this because I would have bet Kahn would have dealt Rubio for some young, cheap pieces or a pick instead of being left at the alter.

Should he stay in Spain for two years and should the Wolves get nothing out of his services, then drafting Rubio would have to be one of the most brainless moves by an executive not named Isiah Thomas in recent memory.

Sweet! now we officially begin the two whole years of speculating about trading for his rights.

  • DinnerDog

    Lame.

  • Mucha

That’s a Larry Bird type of situation x2 (2 years).

But if there’s still a buyout in 2011 – then Kahn is f*cked.

  • jj93

It’s going to be hilarious seeing David Kahn’s reaction to this. Almost as funny as when he was trying to convince anyone that Rubio and Flynn could play together. Kahn’s quickly taking over for Isiah as the worst GM in the league.

  • Magik_Trick

Hopefully this means we’ll finallty stop talking about him…

  • dino2008

    Sign Ramon Sessions!

  • Mucha

Kahn obviously knows that they’ll never play together, he can’t publicly say “We drafted both Flynn and Rubio to trade either one of them when their trade value are high”, you just can’t do that – he had to find a way to justify his decision. I don’t think he believed in it.

Finally, we can stop talking about a PG who was never coming here in the 1st place. In my opinion, DW needed to do everything in his power to get the 5 and 6 picks, we would have gotten 2 players who we wanted(very likely Hill and Rubio, or Curry/Hill). Can we now start obsessing over another player who won’t come here, how about Carlos Boozer?

  • jj93

I realize that, so did everyone else in the world. It was so obvious. But it was a stupid plan to begin with. Why draft someone with the intention of trading them, if you don’t already have a deal in place? It lowers both players’ trade value, since the other team knows you have to trade one of them. Besides possibly hindering one or both players’ growth.

    He should have taken Curry.

    Flynn
    Curry
    Gomes
    Love
    Jefferson

WOW, what a core. He messed up and knows it more than he does.

  • Mucha

They needed a point guard and a swingman – DeRozan was the only one left and he wasn’t a great fit (Rubio being a poor jumpshooter as well). Maybe his workout performance was terrible.

Kahn’s strategy was “We have enough time to figure out which player will be an All Star point guard because the playoffs are clearly out of reach and we’ll fill the voids at the 2 and 3 spots through free agency and the 2010/2011 NBA drafts”.

I would have done everything differently but the jury’s still out – maybe Kahn will be the winner – who knows.

  • bob go knicks

    sign sessions!

  • Mucha

Flynn and Curry defensively is a joke.

  • Knicks4lyfe8

    sign Ramon Sessions!
    DO IT DONNIE

Donnie Walsh is prob sitting at home reading the book. “how to be the slowest gm in nba history.”

  • Myles A. Mills

i actually laughed when anybody would tell me this was a shrewd move by kahn. The pick was terrible.

  • Knicks4lyfe8

but could potentially be the most deadly backcourt in the league.

  • Knicks4lyfe8

I would rather have curry derozan though. derozan is a above average defender. and curry is underrated.

  • Chris Alvino

Hahn says there is still a rumor that Knicks are talking for Rubio. Unreal.

  • bob go knicks

I JUST SAW THAT from hahn …hes got to be kidding!

Excuse me I have to change my pants…..Lee, Nate and a 1 for Rubio? DO IT!!!!

  • NYK Orange and Blue

Hahn won’t let the Rubio rumors die. It’s over let’s all grieve and talk about the upcoming season, enough silly rumors.

  • NYK Orange and Blue

Lee, Nate and a 1? We don’t even have a 1st round pick until 2010, I smell BS.

  • NYK Orange and Blue

    *2011

  • KBT1615

Yea its pure bull he just took it back…..asshole.

  • paulempson

It doesnt work $ wise nor wold DW give up that much for one unproven player. Its BS

Its also no surprise that Rubio is staying in Spain. Until that deal is signed with Barcelona anything is possible but Id say the Rubio conversation is put to rest till 2011.

Kahn , IF he was smart, would have 2 deals on the table just in case this happened and could pull the trigger now making his team better NOW. I love what they did with their coaching staff but man….. this just blew up in his face
