Zgoda: Rubio Trade With Knicks In the Works?

by Myles A. Mills on August 31st, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Via Jerry Zgoda:

“News just broke tonight that Ricky Rubio is poised to sign with Barcelona, but is that really it?

Might the Wolves be about to deal the Spanish point guard, perhaps to the New York Knicks, which Rubio’s parents and representatives have wanted all along?

Or at least is that what Rubio’s agent is trying to facilitate?

A league source tells me there’s plenty of talk floating that the Knicks again are pushing hard to deal for Rubio — probably with an assist from agent Dan Fegan — and there’s word of a Rubio for restricted free agent David Lee, Nate Robinson and a No. 1 pick deal.

That’d  give the Wolves three power forward types, wouldn’t it? But with David Kahn, anything could be possible.

Of course, the Wolves would have to give back some sizable salaries to make the deal work (with the Knicks signing and then trading Lee), but they do have Brian Cardinal and Mark Blount, to name two contracts that total $14 million plus.

The Rubio-to-Barcelona thing still may be just the latest threat to get Rubio to a market where endorsements presumably will pay most of that big buyout.

Stayed tuned.”

Doubt it, it’s like every Knicks beat writer has a conspiracy theory about Rubio and the Knicks.  I don’t think there is any use of overanalyzing; Rubio is going back to Spain.  Maybe Kahn looks into trading him in two years, but not know.

No Hahn just took it back

  • levy858

    took what back?

  • Myles A. Mills

Hahn never said he just retweeted it..

  • Magik_Trick

Thats the dumbest shit i’ve heard in a long time..

Trade David Lee AND Nate Robinson AND a future 1st rounder, for fucking Ricky Rubio? I call B.S., and if its true, Isaiah Thomas is behind it

  • DaJoka

    Open your eyes Myles!!!
Why can’t you see this happening?

  • KBT1615

Either way The Trade was just a rumor Rubio is going to Spain EVERYONE MOVE ON.

  • levy858

I just read the comments on the other blog and literally every Minnesota fan hates this package. However, their counters are ridiculous. Some are calling for Chandler, Gallo, AND a first round pick. IMO for this to go down, a compromise will have to be made or a three team trade will have to be facilitated.

  • barnaby8787

LOL, and we would do this why? We can just sign sessions, hold on to our first, and shop lee for some form of talent (steve blake, outlaw, maybe bayless, etc.)…give up all of that just for ricky rubio? Yeah, ok. If a trade is in the works, it’s prob something like a harrington and chandler for rubio and acp filler…that trade makes sense at the very least

  • Myles A. Mills

    because it won’t.

  • NYK Orange and Blue

This Rubio rumor is like a villain in a horror film, it just won’t die.

  • Myles A. Mills

if rubio goes to the supermarket, people think he’s going to the knicks.

  • DaJoka

@Myles…nice comeback but it doesn’t work for me.
It makes perfect sense….not the trade with Lee and Nate but Rubio coming to the Knicks.
Why this is so hard for you to see is beyond me.
I think that would be a good trade excluding the #1 pick.
I’ll be more than happy to take back Cardinal and Blount.
More money off the books this year…then we trade Curry and Jeffries during the season and we’re in position to sign 2 max deals.
Plus we’ll have Chandler, Gallo, Rubio. Hill and Douglas still here.
Walsh is creeping up on genius status.
Not there yet…..but he’s creeping up on it.

  • dino2008

The Wolves fans clearly don’t know Wilson because if they did they would realize that he is perfect for their team. They can keep Rubio and watch him play in Spain and do nothing to help their organization. This is all nonsense. Sign Ramon Sessions.

  • gbaked

no way you can get those guys for lee

  • NYK Orange and Blue

This trade isn’t happening, we all got trolled on draft night by Kahn and by the Warriors and ever since then us Knicks fans have been grasping at straws. Time to face it, we missed out on Rubio, we missed on Curry, we had a bad draft end of story time to move on. This trade isn’t happening, we should just get Sessions and try to move JJ!

  • dino2008

We didn’t have a bad draft. Douglas was a steal and J HIll was clearly the best player available at 8. I liked our draft. I agree though sign Sessions.

  • Myles A. Mills

signing ramon sessions makes sense, but walsh hasn’t done it.

  • barnaby8787

Actually, we can get blake and outlaw for lee…portland proposed it earlier in the off-season and DW declined…with bayless, i just mean him instead of maybe blake with cap filler…not all three

  • barnaby8787

Flat out, you’re stuck in la la land…we’re not getting rubio…if we do, we’re giving up god knows what plus the first rounder to get him…also, curry and jeffries still need to be traded and we still can’t afford two max deals…we can afford one and probably a contract for a solid player…

  • barnaby8787

We didn’t have a bad draft; we had an unlucky one…

  • DaJoka

No…do not sign Sessions until we can shed more payrooll.
    We don’t need Sessions.
He does not want to take what we are offering so let him kick rocks.
We’re not going to mess up our cap situation for next year because this kid wants a little more money.
If he’s that content then let him sign the QO with the Bucks.
Do not fold…stay patient and stick to your guns.

  • NYK Orange and Blue

dino- We all know that Hill was the 3rd or 4th player on the Knicks board. It was a massive disappointment that none of the guards fell. I am sure he will become a solid player, but by no means does he look like an impact contributor. Douglas is getting overrated by many on here, he is not a PG. He is just like Nate, and undersized SG who thinks he can be a PG. I don’t see him as a factor in our future. We needed Curry/Rubio neither happened, and it’s time we accept it and get the next best thing which is Sessions.

  • NYK Orange and Blue

DaJoka- An extra million or 2 for Sessions is not going to effect the cap. We will only be able to sign ONE free agent as it is right now anyway the extra million in room won’t matter if we can’t trade Curry/JJ. I like Sessions game, 2 way PG, can score inside and pass the ball well, not to mention he actually defends. I think he is a fit in this system, and just because he can’t light it up from downtown doesn’t mean he is a bad player. Tony Parker can’t hit 3′s and he is a great PG.

  • BiggieLittles

    Rubio will be a knick…hopefully.

  • NYK Orange and Blue

Tommy- Tell me your latest tweet has nothing to do with the Knicks turning down Wil for Rubio.

  • Rene

Thee are not to many options for a star potential point guard floating around, the risk reward is worth the shot at this kid,I’ve been scouting players for years for fun and I never herd better praise than this guy,Pistol or Clyde, this kid can be very special and NY is the perfect fit for him.Lee,N8,#1 no problem where do I sign.

  • paulempson

    Would you guys relax

Rubio is not coming t o NY for that deal. DW would not make that deal. It also doesnt work fiancially

    Maybe a Chandler ( they need a 3 ) & Hughes + cash ( need a 2 ) for Cardinal & Blount . Doubt it tho..

Look we have a glut at the 3 unless Chandler turns into a 2.

I say Kahn just got punk’d by his 5th pick and nothing will happen

Ricky , in the end , chose Barcelona , not Minnisota.

  • DinnerDog

    How about this:

    Ricky Rubio to the Knicks

    David Lee to the Blazers

Wilson Chandler, Jared Bayless to Portland

That works under the cap. You could also add contracts to that (Mobley or Pryzbilla) with some of Minesota’s expirings coming back the other direction if they wanted to.

Someone forward this to Donnie Walsh. I’ll be here all night.

  • Mucha

Nobody will but your trade idea is great – not realistic financially though.

  • Chris Alvino

Yeah that trade does make some sense. The Wolves potentially make out the best in that deal.

Wilson and Lee for Rubio is still a lot IMO. The guy has never played an NBA game before.

  • J-Knick

Sorry but signing Sessions for the full MLE and 6 M$ less of cap space in 2010 doesnt make sense to me.

it’s a matter of fair price so you cant blame Donnie if Sessions is too greedy.

  • J-Knick

Where did you get that TP cant hit 3s ?? check out the stats before comparing Sessions to TP. Ramon will never reach TP’s potential.

  • J-Knick

Woul you have done Lee+Chandler for Derrick Rose last summer ?

  • bob go knicks

    who is TP?

  • bob go knicks

    NOW THEN AND ALWAYS

  • KBT1615

How do we know if Rubio will be as good? Those are our two best players.

  • KBT1615

Douglas is a PG…He can just score he was put on a team where he was the only scoring option. Also Im sure his scoring will translate its hard to score in college.

  • parkerstrong

Sessions won’t sign for the full MLE-no other team has come close to offering it. The rumor is the Knicks do not have a deal on the table for Sessions-if they put the deal on the table Sessions probably signs right away. Nobody else out there has shown as much interest as the Knicks and nobody could get him a starting job. 4 million for 2009-2010, 3.68 million for 2010-2011 with only 500,000 guaranteed. That should get him signed….and after the season and numbers Sessions puts up in 35 minutes a game the Knicks will have to guarantee that deal-great price for the production he produces.

  • parkerstrong

Nobody is saying fold and give Sessions the deal he wants….all of his options have gone in a different direction. The Knicks have all the leverage-sign here or go back to the Bucks where they have alot invested in Jennings and also have 2 other PG (Ridnour/Ukic). If the Knicks offer 4 million for 2009-2010 and unguaranteed year for 2010-2011 Sessions probably signs. He won’t get a better deal anywhere else. The rumor is the Knicks don’t have the deal on the table anymore, but could offer it again. The deal was probably off the table to try and get Rubio, but clearly that didnt work.

  • parkerstrong

I checked out the stats and Tony Parker hit 29.2% from 3point land last year (only 65 attempts) and 31.3% for his career (992 attempts in 612 games). NKY Orange and Blue is correct-Tony Parker can’t hit 3s.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1015

  • J-Knick

I’d love that deal but in this case the ball is in Sessions’ court and Donnie and us just need to be patient ….

  • J-Knick

Sessions was 17% on 6 for 34. I call that “cant hit 3s”

  • J-Knick

Just like you couldn’t know last year if D-Rose would be that good !

  • Chris Alvino

I would have traded both of those players for Blake Griffin this year.

  • DinnerDog

I guess no forwarded this idea to Donnie. However, it does work according the the ESPN trade machine.
