Rubio’s Agent Trying to Steer Him to NY

by Tommy Dee on September 1st, 2009 at 12:05 am

Dan Fegan was hired for this very reason- to get his client to a big market. So with Ricky Rubio’s endorsement funds in the Twin Cities lacking, it would appear that the attention has turned into trying to force a deal to the Knicks.

But there are several key factors in play here.

First, David Kahn worked for Donnie Walsh, so you figure some of the patience that fans in NY have become accustomed to has rubbed off on the Wolves GM. He can field plenty of offers while his property is playing overseas. But, can he allow for the bad PR?

Secondly, don’t expect the Knicks to overpay. Walsh likes Toney Douglas and any deal, to me, would have to include Wilson Chandler, who the team is extremely high on. He can be had in the right deal, but the team is in no rush to deal him. Nate Robinson would also be a huge draw in Minnesota, who can leverage his Krypto-Nate image. He’s popular here, but I’d think that the fans in Minnesota would have an exteme soft-spot for the 5’8 underdog.

But it depends on how much Walsh sees the need for Rubio. I’ve recently heard that the team was higher on Stephen Curry than Rubio during the draft, which contradicts a source who told me that Rubio was the target. I believe they would have been happy with both, but judging on how they have chased point guards this summer, you’d have to think they would lean towards Rubio over Curry, as he has more experience at quarterback. Plus, D’Antoni himself admitted that Deron Williams, Chris Paul and Jason Kidd all noted that Rubio was “the real deal” at the Olympic games.

Without question, Rubio would be a fit under the right circumstances, and the two sides have reportedly talked plenty, but it would seem tonight’s rumors are coming more from Rubio’s camp than anything in a last ditch effort to have his client where he should be.

Stay tuned.

TO LITTLE TO LATE FOR KAHN.

He is in no position to ask for 2 RFA’s & a 1st fro crap like Cradinal & Blount

Chandler & Hughes or Chandler and Duhon …+ 2nd pick …maybe

    but for wha

    Im with Tommy on this.

I just dont think the story is fully written yet. Cant wait for the end game.

Those who are saying it is certain that this story is over are mistaken.

Donnie and MD are totally in love with what Rubio brings. That is obvious.

Rubio is part of the big splash deal in the works. The Sessions, Nate, Lee situation fits that theory. Maybe a third team is involved (Portland/Bulls?)

    but something is brewing.

Rubio’s value will not be higher than it is now. Why would a team give up a ton while he is playing in Spain? To deal with his buyout later? To hope that he decides to actually come to the NBA?

  • levy858

you can’t do Chandler and Duhon. Then you go to war with your only two point guards as rookies. Then you would have to sign someone which negates the point of having Rubio. If you get Sessions, then Duhon is expendable, if you get Rubio, you would like to keep Duhon before handing the reigns to two unproven rookies.

    YES chris 100% agree….
the only thing that can happen is value goes DOWN
injury …. or he doesnt impress on the court as expected

I am still VERY skeptical. We have thought several times this summer that Rubio was a lock, and each time the same story. I suspect Kahn lets his pride get the best of him and he will let Rubio go to Spain before sending him to his mentor DW. The Knicks are not getting any favors from other teams in the league, we will have to come back as a franchise from the ashes on our own. I just hope DW has us on the right course.

  • J-Knick

It seems that he wont join the NBA until 2011.

His value may rise or decrease depending on his performances in one of the best european team.

but obviously Mr Kahn has lost a ton of negociating power !

  • dino2008

Donnie needs to put pressure on Kahn somehow. Threaten to make an offer to Sessions or something. I think this is all crap anyway. Much rather have my boy Wilson and Sessions than Ricky, though i think the world of him. I think Ramon is perfect for us and he will come relatively cheap.

This is dumb, look at the shit were willing to sacrifice for an overhyped rookie, this is ridiculous…

  • NYK Orange and Blue

Hahn contradicts himself in every story. Seriously, I think it’s safe to put Rubio-watch to rest for good. He is staying in Spain, the NY talks are hot-air from his agents.

    Sessions Please!

  • Nytickets

If this was the lakers or Celtics they would get Rubio and a first round pick for Nothing

Come on Walsh Do something . Quote From Walsh Knicks will be very active in August . It is Sept 1 and Nothing . Wake UP

“If this was the lakers or Celtics they would get Rubio and a first round pick for Nothing ”

So true. I think this deal is dead, Kahn overplayed his hand big time and now he must live with an embarrassing 2 year stand-off with Rubio and his people.

  • parkerstrong

    I’ll second that….Sessions please!

  • parkerstrong

Does anyone else think that Lee, Nate and a 1st round pick for Rubio, Cardinal and Blount an awful deal?? I don’t care if those guys are expiring contracts thats completely lopsided. Not to mention the T-Wolves already have 2 PF (Love and Jefferson) They need a SG and we have to get a young up and comer like Chandler-thats where the negotiations would start.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again…..Sessions + Chandler> Rubio
(would have to trade Chandler+ for Rubio)

  • jingo

I wouldn’t trade a first round pick for anyone if I was the Knicks. In this economy there seems to be no better asset than a draft pick. Especially since the Knicks aren’t assured of being good for the foreseeable future. As far as Lee, Nate and other assets for Rubio, I’d do it in a second. Lee’s days as a Knicks are soon to be over. They have already drafted his replacement (whether Hill grows into the role is as yet undetermined). Nate’s days as a Knick are already over.

There is no way at this point to know how Chandler/Sessions would compare to Rubio but I would much prefer to take my chances with Rubio. You need a core of star players to win in the NBA and Rubio’s chance of achieving star status is much higher than Chandler’s. Chandler is very solid but lacks a certain a sense for the game that Rubio was clearly born with. Rubio may bust but his ceiling is very high. Much higher IMO than Chandler’s.

In a perfect world I’d like to see the Knicks get Rubio w/o having to deal Chandler but I would trade Chandler in a package for Rubio if that’s what it took to get him.
